Will George Mills make the DL final? He is currently in 16th place based on points but I have lost track of how the DL works nowadays. I ask because rather than a 1500, its a mile race at the final, for which he is currently world no.1.

A Mile in Eugene?? For flip's sake - the Americans just can't help themselves, can they?

To answer your question. It's all on the DL points for the 1500. Any DL Mile (& 2000m) races during the "regular" DL season count towards the DL points for the 1500.

And judging by last year only the top 10 make it to the final?

They always do the Bowerman Mile at the Pre Classic (which is what this meet is this year, along with being the DL final). It's the same as Oslo doing the Dream Mile or one of the UK DL races usually having the Emsley Carr. Tradition and all that.

Yeah, but it's the DL Final for the 1500 so it should be that distance. When Zurich hosts the DL finals they don't have a 3000m and pass it off as the final for the 5000. And no, it's not the same as Oslo having the Dream Mile because Oslo isn't the DL Final.

Does it have DL points though?

I mean, it's technically the DL final for the 1500m/mile, if you want to be pedantic. That's how it is set up in the format, at least for this year - https://www.diamondleague.com/filead...3_18072023.pdf

The Oslo mile counted the points towards the joint 1500m/mile rankings for the season.

And it would be the same if they did it for the 3000m/5000m, looking at that chart. So the 3000m for women in Oslo got points for the same competition as the 5000m in Paris.

Whether it *should* be that way or not is a different matter.

So right Lucky. Americans you just know they have to be different. I will hope for a stadium with a few fans therein😄

The US really needs to learn that Eugene is an abysmal place to host athletics competitions. Somewhere like NYC, Philadelphia, Chicago or Atlanta and you'd get a guaranteed crowd.

They've had meetings in New York; they didn't attract a great crowd unless Bolt was running; crowd was mostly made up of the Jamaican diaspora.

Yes, but the venue (Randall's Island) doesn't have much seating (capacity only 5000). Having said that, I remember two landmark performances at the event - Bolt's first 100m world record, 9.72 in 2008, and a brilliant high jump duel in 2014 between Barshim and Bondarenko when both cleared 2.42.

Hayward Field in Eugene is a fantastic venue, and the crowd that does attend is knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The problem is it's too remote, transport to get there is poor and there's not enough accommodation. It's hard to see these obstacles being overcome in the future.

BTW, the accommodation problem for this DL final is even worse, because there's an Oregon american football home game this weekend, and that attracts legions. I tried to book a room back in March when the meet tickets first went on sale, and could only get a pretty shitty one far from the stadium.
