what British athletes can people see making a breakthrough next year

  • #2
Taking 'breakthrough' to mean 'represent GB at a senior globals (i.e. in Paris)', I think the following have a chance:
Glave (4 x 100), Hussey (800), Hicks (5k), Ikeji (HT), Hunt (200), Mhlanga or Ives (800), Hadaway (LJ), Walton (JT), O'Dowda (HEPT). I want to add Niamh Emerson as well, but let's keep crossing our fingers like we have for the last 4 years.

Let's hope so, but I've lost count of the number of promising 72-78m junior throwers who haven't progressed to 80+.

Echo many of the others mentioned above. Hunt, Glave and Mhlanga the most obvious, and I'd add a few:

Erin Wallace: Between Wallace, Mhlanga, Bell and Boffey (perhaps Ives too, and who knows what Gill could do!), the battle for the third 800 spot in Paris is going to be fierce, but I fancy Wallace to come out on top. Fair to say she has had a tough year (for obvious reasons), but I think she is massively talented and really expect a lot from her in the future.

Rio Mitcham: He has perhaps already had his breakout, but I expect him to push on and qualify for Paris individually next summer. 44.4, 44.4, 44.6 on relays this week, and he has enough speed (10.4 PB) to be competitive when combined with his strength at the end of a race.

It's easy to be a pessimist, but I am actually quite positive about our prospects across a bunch of events on the track, male and female - I see a dozen names to be excited about in out middle distance ranks alone! The field is, however, quite depressing (apart from the hammer throwers!)... Hoping for a few jumpers to appear, as they may be in a worse state than our throwers (Sawyers aside).

in regards to qualifying for Paris would like a second jumper behind Sawyers (or 3, including Ugen) which would most likely be Lucy Hadaway. And Bekah Walton in the Javelin to go past 60m.

I tell you where next year begins - 2024 World Indoor Athletics Championships, Glasgow March 1 -3.

I'd like to see us max out the numbers on Team GB, with a strong commitment from many of the funded athletes plus young hopefuls.

Seb Coe talked about atlhetes don't compete enough - I actually agree.

Even with Paris Olympics next year this is a home, global competition and is a great opportunity for the likes of Azu, Ojora & Anning.

Harry Coppell, Tom Gale, Sophie McKinna, Naomi Metzger, Ben Williams, the list of GB no.1 in the field events to make a strong comeback next year is long.

Coppell has been beset by a bunch of injuries this year. It's easy to forget that he was the World Youth champion a decade ago in Donetsk, or that he finished a pretty creditable 7th at the Tokyo Olympics (cleared 5.80m) just a couple of years ago, and of course won a Commonwealth bronze last year.

The trouble with Coppell has been than even when fit he’s seemed woefully inconsistent. He obviously does have talent.

Phoebe Gill and Teddy Wilson are both still u17s but both look ready to make the step up if not next year then soon after.

I say Charlie Carvell will continue to improve and make the 4x4 team. YMJ was very close to the standard this year, so will hopefully get it next year.

Getting Dustin back to his best will make the 800 even more competitive.

Carvell and Faulds could both make the 4x400 squad of they remain fit, both are superbly talented.

More from the U17 ranks. Callia Downey and Savannah Morgan in the women's 200m who look likely to step up into the U20 level pretty well.

Molly Caudery was very much a great improver this year and performed when it mattered.

It'll be interesting to see what strength team we send to the European Champs next summer. UKA hasn't yet published its selection policy for those champs.

You would imagine that it wouldn't be a full strength team but you also would imagine that there are a bunch of athletes who might want to take the opportunity to get more championship experience. And a good run there could lead to a place in Paris. The gap between the 2 champs is almost 2 months, so not quite as hectic as it was last summer.

The World Indoors being in the UK also complicates things. You'd want a strong team there, in principle, but not if it might jeopardise the athletes' preparations for the summer.

I suspect they'll want big names at the World Indoors but lots won't go (I can see Kerr and KJT missing it, for example, and I think it makes sense for both of them). Keely should be there, as will Laura Muir, and I can see the men's middle-distance being strong.

              • #14
Previous Olympic year Euros we haven't sent out strongest team. I doubt things will be any different for Rome. I suspect a lot of bigger names will swerve. Opportunity for Sprinters, 800 runners and field eventers to compete in likely good conditions for those looking for Auto Qs.

World Relays is the main route to Olympic Qualifying but if there are any mishaps there we may have to send a strong relay team to get a quick time. And even if we are all safely qualified we may want to send strong relay teams anyway for key competition practice.

World Indoors - I kinda expect those who regularly do indoors to be tempted, likes of Laura and Keely spring to mind. A few Scots like Gourley and Reekie could also be tempted.

It's a long time since Dina has done an Indoor champs but feels like she could do with a confidence boost - KJT used World Indoors in 2018 as a confidence booster after a few disappointing champs to gain confidence from winning again. Just a thought.

The advantage of the relays already doing pretty well in Budapest is that we probably can afford a few things going wrong in the World Relays and still be in with a realistic shot of getting the timed qualifier anyway no matter what happens in the Euros. Unless a bunch of other teams also have a bad world relays!

2012 we definitely selected a weaker team but 2016 was more of a mixed bag - quite a lot of the athletes there had competed in Amsterdam. But both of those years the gap between the champs was only 4 weeks. This time it is closer to 8 weeks. It might make a difference.

DAS should do the 100m at the Euros next June - hopefully regaining the title she lost to Kambundji in 2022. I suspect DN might have a crack at the 200m in Rome.

DAS lost the 200m to Kambunji, not 100m. I will say that I expect DAS and DN to do different events if they do the Euros!
