Ella Rush managed a best throw of 33.88m for javelin at the Torrin Lawrence Invitational on Friday, her best season opener with the spear. Hopefully she'll be throwing closer to 40m later in the year with the European U20's on the horizon and the NCAAs too for the heptathlete.

Brodie Young's strong start to life as a New Mexico University student athlete continued as the 20 year old 400m specialist ran a huge lifetime best in the 200m at the New Mexico Invitational last Thursday. His time of 21.31 (+1.0 m/s) in winning his section heat was the first time he'd run wind legally under 22 seconds in the half lap sprint, (as well as his first 200m run outdoors since 2021) and took a near second and a half from his previous outdoor PB (22.91) in 2019.

2 and half weeks on from his 46.09 400m PB in Texas, this is further proof that Young's improvement is continuing at a good clip.

Another Brit competing at this meeting was 400m runner Rebecca Grieve, also from Scotland and still an U20 this year, ran a 5 second outdoor PB in the 800m, coming 4th in 2:09.15. Grieve, only 18, ran even faster over the distance indoors, while her 54.18 indoor 400m PB was only bettered by Emily Newnham's 53.18 run among British U20s during the winter.

She looks on course to at least make the GB 4x400m relay squad for the European U20 Championships in a couple of months time, judging by her progress shown in 2023.

Some early news as day one of the MT Sac Relays in Walnut, California gets underway.... Ella Rush, representing Georgia, gets her first heptathlon of the year off to a good start by setting a new 100mH PB of 14.27 (+0.7 m/s) in the opening discipline. She'll be looking to improve upon the 5491 points total she managed at this same meeting last April which at the time was her personal best. Rush would then go on to the World U20s in Cali and add exactly 100 points to that in finishing a creditable 6th place in a very strong of competitors.

Now in the high jump, Rush has so far cleared 1.55m and 1.59m.

And she ends up with a best clearance of 1.68m at the third attempt. But then has a disappointing shot put where she only managed 11.83m. In the same heptathlon at this meeting last year, she threw 12.73m, her second best ever shot distance.

Ella Rush finished day one of the heptathlon with a 25.27 (+2.4 m/s) 200m, to end up with a halfway points total of 3283, nearly 500 points behind the current leader Allie Jones of USC.

Meanwhile in the decathlon contest, U23s Jami Schlueter and Ollie Thorner, also have made decent starts. Schlueter in particular is going very well as in the opening 2 events - the 100m and long jump - he's set PBs. He ran sub 11 seconds for the first time, stopping the clock at 10.96 (+0.7 m/s) in finishing 2nd in the opening heat. Then in the long jump he improved on his PB with a 7.09m (+0.5 m/s) leap in the opening round, bettering the 7.03m mark he set way back in 2018 as an U17 when winning the English Schools title!

Thorner, who has GB vests from the European U18s and U20s, and like Schlueter is studying at Washington University, opened up with an 11.14 (+0.1 m/s) 100m, not too far off his 10.97 PB from last year, while his long jump of 6.77m (+0.4 m/s) was a season's best.

Currently in the overall standings, Schlueter is in 2nd place with 1705 points and on course for a big PB, while Thorner is in 7th on 1590 points.

On to the decathlon shot put and Schlueter gets an outdoor PB with 13.50m, while Thorner's 13.04m is just 1cm under his PB.

Day one in the decathlon ended with Schlueter clearing an outdoor PB in the high jump of 1.89m (he has an indoor PB of 1.91m from 2022), and getting an outright PB in the 400m of 50.48, slicing nearly 3/10ths off his previous best time. Those performances added up to Schlueter collecting a halfway points total of 3901 and he sits in 2nd place in the overall standings, 206 points behind the leader Will Daniels. He is looking well on his way to a substantial decathlon points PB if he remains in PB form.

Ollie Thorner is right behind Schlueter in 3rd place with 3853 points after a 1.92m high jump (2.01 PB indoors, 1.96m PB outdoors) and a fabulous 400m in 48.99, his first time under 49 seconds.

Ella's shot definitely a bit disappointing.

SB and outdoor PB of 1.89 in the HJ for Jami Schlueter. 3108 after four events, still in second place but just one point ahead of the third placed athlete.

It's actually only his third full senior decathlon (he also did one as an u17). He DNF at last year's UK champs, I don't remember him there but I see he was DQ in the hurdles but continued up to the PV.

Honestly, Rush in 2023, at least at this still early stage of it, isn't looking like improving on where she was last year at the World U20s. Hopefully she has a better day 2 today.

Schlueter is an interesting case.. The first I ever heard of him was last year when checking for one of the other UK athletes competing on the NCAA circuit, finding this name in the results and expecting to find out he was some German... only to discover that he was actually a Brit!
He's made a lot of progress in the last 12 months, and this decathlon is proof of that. If he's able to keep up the PB pace from day, then I can see him smashing his 7139 points tally from this same meeting last year. And if he has an exceptionally good 2nd day, he might even get over the 7700 points needed to qualify for the European U23s too.

And the 400 sees not only a 50.48 pb see Jami pulling further ahead in second place, but Ollie Thorner's 48.99, also a PB, pulls him up into third place at the end of day one!

25.27 SB for Ella in the 200 leaves her in 11th place overall at the end of her first day.

Back at the Mt SAC Relays, Jami Schlueter runs 14.64 (+1.5 m/s) in the 110m hurdles, then throws 38.31m in the decathlon discus. For Ollie Thorner, the hurdles is perhaps his weakest event out of the 10, having never managed to run sub 15 seconds since becoming an U23. He ran 15.46, which would have been a SB had it not been for the +2.2 m/s wind in his heat. Thorner then managed to go out to 39.18m in the final round of the discus, though he will be bit disappointed by that as at his best, he's a 42m+ performer.

After those results, Schlueter remains in 2nd place overall with a points tally of 5425, slightly narrowing the gap between himself and the overnight leader Will Daniels (5547). Thorner's hurdling and
slightly under-par discus means that he slips from third down to 5th on 5296. However, he is a decent pole vaulter (PB 4.85i, 2023) and that is up next.

Meanwhile in the heptathlon, Ella Rush manages a outdoor SB of 5.96m (+1.3 m/s) in the long jump... but for someone who last year managed to win the British Indoor title with a lifetime best of 6.34m (and beating several specialist long jumpers in the process), as well as regularly jumping over 6m outdoors during the summer, she'll have been frustrated to yet again fall short of that mark this season.

With that mark, Ella Rush moves up one spot on the overall standing with 4120 points, with the javelin and 800m still to go.

I find combined eventers often struggle in the first year of US college life as they transition to new coaching etc. I’d like to see what Ella can do across the season, but I suspect it won’t be massive progress from last year - but next year may well see a leap up. This summer, I’m hoping Maddy Hutton sees that bounce up in performance and on towards 5700+ territory. Not the tallest, but has an Ennis-like mentality on her side

Ehh, not so sure about Hutton being in that lofty category... Ennis was already regularly high jumping over 1.80m, long jumping over 6.20m and was a mid-23 sec 200m runner as a 19/20 year old. Hutton has done neither so far and hasn't really come close yet. She is a slightly better javelin exponent, but that's about it.

Hutton has a *long* way to go to be even sort of up there with Ennis at this stage of her development.

I don’t mean individual performance-wise, but her mentality - she’s got a consistency to her, getting the most out of her ability that Ennis had, even as a youngster. I very much doubt we see anything like the level of performances you mention (possibly her long jump, where 6.20m isn’t out of the question). Will depend on how well the coaching has bedded in, but she’s added a couple of hundred points on her Pent, so her current c.5300 hep score should be revised

Good points jjimbo. I think Hutton can at least get up to the 5400 points required for the Euro U23 Q standard. How she goes from there is anyone's guess of course.

And Jami Schlueter finishes with 7427, a pb by almost 300 points, in 2nd overall and the top college athlete in that competition. Ollie Thorner well down on his best with 6757 in 7th.

Ella Rush finished with 5422. As people have said she seems to be struggling a bit with her new college set up.

Great PB from Schlueter. Thorner had a nightmare pole vault as he took zero points following three failures at his opening height of 4.10m. That explains his low final score.

As for Rush, well the one bright spot for her is that final heptathlon score is enough (just!) to sneak over UKA's qualifying standard for the European U20s (5400). So she has thrown her hat into the ring for selection at least. But with some of the junior talent we have currently at the moment, it might end up being the 4th or 5th best heptathlon points score from a British U20 before the final decision will be made.

She may well do conference champs which are usually early-mid May to see if she can qualify for NCAA Champs in June (I suspect her current score won't be enough) Kyle Garland also no heighted in PV so at least Thorner in good company there.

Ladyloz Yeah, I'm leaning towards that being the plan with the conference champs for Rush. It certainly would make sense as on the 27th-28th May are when the EA Senior/U20/U23 Combined Events Champs are taking place, so she will be able to put down another score before the selection cut off point.

(As for Kyle Garland, that was a surprise for sure.)

Elizabeth Korczak, finalist in the 2021 European U20's (finishing 11th) and now a first year U23 studying at Iowa University, threw a javelin season's 47.86m at the Jim Duncan Invitational, in Des Moines, Iowa. After her breakthrough season in 2021 where she threw over 50 meters for the first time, Korczak had a difficult 2022, restricted to a solitary appearance at the UK Athletics Champs due to injury.
Hopefully the 20 year old will have a much more fruitful 2023 and start throwing over and beyond 50m again soon.

Kenneth Ikeji wins the UCONN Northeast Challenge hammer contest with a best effort of 69.58m.

Temi Ojora was 2nd at the Mt SAC Relay triple jump with 13.47m

Yemi Mary John, at the same meeting, was also 2nd in the 400m race, running 51.87

Louis Hinchcliffe lowered his 100m PB for the second time in as many days as the Washington State athlete came 2nd at the Mt SAC Relays in 10.22 (+1.6 m/s).

Hannah Blood, an U23 hammer thrower who has been competing and studying on the US college circuit since 2020, opened her season with a 59.09m effort at the Mesa Classic in Arizona on Friday.

Excellent consistency so far from Allison.

(Additionally, I know it is still very early in the outdoor season, but it is heartening to see on the EA website ranking page for U20 athletes - with the European U20 Champs coming up in the summer - that currently 2nd, 3rd and 4th places in the men's javelin are all filled by British athletes. Allison, then Callum Taylor and Charlie Evans. I know it won't last, but for the heavy throwing fans on here, it's cause for some optimism at least!)

More British U20 and U23 results from the college circuit...

At the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton, New Jersey, U23 high jumper Madeline Woods set a new PB of 1.77m at the second attempt, before bowing out at 1.80m. Fellow Brit and Princeton team mate Georgina Scoot was in both the long jump and triple jump and the 19 year old ended up with 5th place in the former, leaping 5.79 (0.0 m/s) SB, and winning the latter in a season's best 12.45m (+2.0 m/s).

Decathlete Philip Kastner, an improving U23, was in the men's long jump contest, which he won with a 6.91m (-0.2 m/s) effort, though he has jumped over 7.20m+ during the indoor season.
