  • A result that's just popped up on Po10... World U20 200m finalist Sophie Walton ran a wind legal 11.71 PB (+1.5) at the Trafford Medal Meeting in Stretford yesterday during a mixed race. It's just outside the 11.65 needed to qualify for the European U20s this summer, and is Walton's first electronically timed PB over 100m since running 11.96 in 2019 aged 15.

Is this just a case of some speed work, or is Walton possibly looking to double up in Jerusalem? Just a thought on my part.

I have a feeling it’s speed work. She strikes me as much of a 200m/400m athlete. Would love to see if she runs a low key 400m this season to put herself in relay contention. Although she should be a pretty safe bet for the 4x100m having been on the team for a few years already

  • One we missed from the BFT meeting a few days ago: Sean Anyaogu got a Euro u20 qualifier and PB of 10.47 to consolidate his No. 1 UK u20 ranking.

    • Well, not technically an athletics result, but it could affect the results of athletes competing...

According to English Athletics, the venue for this year's UK U20 & U23 Championships in Chelmsford, might not take place due to "undergoing track refurbishment". They will provide an update on June 7th.

I saw that. All a bit last minute, isn't it?

Southern champs had to move at short notice as well. Only confirmed yesterday, it'll be in Walton on Thames

    • 1.98 HJ PB for u17 jumps specialist/multi eventer Sam Wright at the BIGish meeting in Chelmsford.

At the same meeting, Qi Chi Ukpai jumped 12.40 in the TJ, which would have been a 30cm pb but for the 2.1 wind (so only just over the limit). U23 Georgina Forde-Wells was lucky with an exactly 2.0 wind for a legal pb of 12.96, and won the comp with a 13.02 (+2.5).

In the throws, u17 Ellie Bostock threw a 14.46 pb in the 3K shot.

To add to the results from this event, U17 Mia Judd (*probably* no relation to Jessica!) set an outright high jump PB of 1.74m, which matches the Q standard for the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Molly Palmer, like some of the other horizontal jumps you mentioned, was denied a PB and Euro U23 Q jump by the wind. She won the long jump with a 6.39m (+3.9) jump, while U20 multi eventer Lucy Fellows' 6.25m effort for 2nd place, was also chalked off for record keeping purposes due to the +3.3m/s wind.

Timi Babatunde improved his season's best in the U20 discus to 52.80m, though still short of the 55.00m needed to qualify for the Euro U20s, while fellow U20 Teddy Gannon threw 51.49m.

In the women's discus, U20 Zara Obamakinwa yet again went beyond the EU20 Q standard this year with a best of 53.56m SB. a result that moves her up to 3rd on the European U20 lists so far in 2023.

And finally, U17 Tom Rutter added 2 and half metres to his javelin PB to win in 67.13m, which is good enough for a CWYG Q standard, while in the women's equivalent, Ayesha Jones, another U17, threw 50.53m, her 4th best throw in her young career and also the 4th time she's gone over the CWYG Q distance (48.00m).

At that same Loughborough Open meeting, first year U20 Oliver Parker, ran 53.18 in the U18 400m hurdles, yet again under the qualifying requirement for the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Another first year U20 hurdler, Demari Gumbs, in the senior 400m hurdles final (though he was traversing the U18 barriers in his lane) not only won the race but took nearly 8/10ths off his PB with 53.77, just outside the CWYG Q time required.

Emily Newnham in the 400m flat, shaved 4/100ths off her outdoor PB as she ran 53.35, under the European U20 standard.

The men's pole vault saw Lazerus Benjamin, who has competed at the World and European U20s in the last two years, clear 5.10m, a SB and Euro U20 qualifier. U23 Reuben Naire, who also competed for GB alongside Benjamin in Tallinn 2021 as an U20, finishing 8th, equalled his 5.10m outdoor PB for the 2nd time in a week at the same venue, having achieved the feat in the Loughborough International on the 21st May.

The 110m hurdles saw Noah Hanson, despite being hampered yet again by stiff headwinds on the home straight, as he has been in his last 2 outings, run under the CWYG Q standard with a clocking of 13.74 (-1.4) over the 91.4cm barriers. Tony Jarret trained U20 Joe Purbrick was 2nd in 14.10 over the U20, 99.1cm hurdles while fellow U20 Ruben Hedman, actually set a PB of 14.12. U18 Charlie Staddon was 3rd in 14.16 over the 91.4cm hurdles. Rayhan Mourtada, an U17 who has already set substantial PBs over U17 100m hurdles (12.99) and 400m hurdles (54.69) earlier in the month, had his first ever outing over the U18 hurdles and 110m length race, and came away with a time of 14.38.

Having recently thrown over 70m, Charlotte Payne won the hammer contest with a best throw of 68.71m.

U23 Tom Wilcox was denied a sub-14 second time in the senior 110m hurdles race with his 14.17 being run into -1.6m/s headwind.

            • At the Herc Wimbo 1500m Festival Night in Wimbledon yesterday, first year U20 Alex Riley came 3rd in his 1500m race with a time of 3:46.69. This was a PB by over 4 seconds and saw him go easily under the Commonwealth Youth Games standard (3:52.0) and came within touching distance of the European U20 standard also (3:45.0). 11 days earlier, during the Night Of 10,000m PBs at Parliament Hill, Riley had also set a big PB in the invitational 800m races run during that evening, his 1:50.44, an improvement of almost 3 full seconds and also a CWYG qualifying effort.

RunUnlimited Tops in Athletics ranking shows Alex Riley's dob as December 2005, so he is not eligible for the CWG as it's 2006/7 born only on EA qual standards.

            • 8.04.78 pb by 2.5s (and almost half a minute faster than he ran last year) for the rapidly improving u20 Conan Harper at the Scottish national age group 3000m champs. Moves him up to 3rd in the crowded UK u20 rankings in what is possibly our strongest event in this age group atm.

Jess Bailey got the Euro u20 qualification with a run of 9.22 and the very promising newcomer Natasha Phillips was not far outside with a pb 9.33, about half a second inside her previous best over the distance. U17 Amy Teasdale ran a pb 9.36.85 behind them.

                  • From last weekend: u20 Callie Coates achieved a 6 cm pb of 1.78 to top the UK HJ rankings in her age group. Halle Ferguson, whose pb of 1.78 came last year, jumped 1.77 at another meeting. Not quite at Euro qual standard (1.81).

                    • Another from the bank holiday meetings: u17 phenomenon Phoebe Gill ran a SB 4.18.52. Not only does that put her at the top of the UK u17 rankings, it would do so the u20s too, ahead of last year's u18 Euro champion Annie Mann, but it was in a mixed race.

                        • Speaking of the Southern England Champs, someone on this thread mentioned that Faith Akinbileje hadn't made an appearance yet this year. Well, you need not worry as last year's European U18 200m and Medley Relay gold medallist made her season's debut yesterday, which culminated in her winning the U20 100m in 11.96, Akinbileje, like everyone in the sprint events yesterday, having to deal with strong headwinds throughout the day, and that was no different in the final that was run into a -2.4m/s one.
