His PBs add up to 7928, which would be an U20 national record by more than 200 points. Not too shabby for a second year. He's got so much scope for improvement as well. Excellent sprinter and shot putter for his age. You'd think his LJ should improve soon, given his speed.

Fingers and toes crossed that he steers clear of injuries.

I was a bit dubious about his recent 33.95 run over 300m, but that was unfair. His first day, if it all comes together could be spectacular. His LJ as you say is due a sizeable revision.

That hypothetical points tally would make for some interesting finishing positions at both World and European U20s in the past 3 editions of each:

      World U20s

      Cali 2022 - Gold
      Nairobi 2021 - Bronze
      Tampere 2018 - Silver

      European U20s

      Tallinn 2021 - Bronze
      Boras 2019 - Gold
      Grossetto 2017 - Fourth

  • PB and Euro qual 1.48.23 for u20 David Race in the 800 won by Sam Reardon.

    • Iris Downes went out hard in the w800 in an attempt to gain the Euro time, but was overhauled by Indienne King who was rewarded with a pb 2.06.30 as well as the win.

Incidentally I see on po10 that Abigail Ives, who already had the standard from indoors, backed it up with a 2.04.43 on 1 May.

Downes ran out of steam in the closing 80m, but her intent to take it on and try for that qualifying time is a good sign. I'm sure she'll get it in the coming weeks, as will Indienne King who just missed out yesterday by only 3/10ths of a second.

Along with Ives who already has the time, that's at least 3 U20s good enough for the European U20s... and that's before we've seen the likes of Ava Lloyd or Ella Greenway take to the track outdoors yet. (Greenway already has the standard from the indoor season too). There's the intriguing Breanna Selley, a British national born in Swindon who currently lives in Italy, Rebecca Grieve over in the US Collegiate system and Abigail Stratton, also in the running, having run 800m PBs or close to them this year that aren't far off the Q standard.

Unlike last year's World U20s, GB can send a maximum of three athletes for individual events at the 2023 European U20s, so it's going to be very interesting to see who makes the 800m team with the wealth of talent currently available.

    • 4.18.65 pb and well under the Euro standard for u20 Annie Mann, reigning u18 champion.

      Comment

      • PB of 9.00.11 for u23 Megan Keith in her first track race of the year.

Innes FitzGerald's 9.07.54 is well under the Euro 3000 standard, and u17 Isobelle Jones also dips under with a pb 9.29.90.

        • Eco-warrior Innes Fitzgerald, in a race won by U23 Megan Keith in 9:00.11, clocks 9:07.54, her 2nd fastest ever over the distance and well under the 9:30.0 Q standard for the European U20s.

She declined her place at World Cross because of the environmental impact of flying, and travelled by train to Euro Cross. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-64427450

Given the Euro Juniors are in Jerusalem this year, I don't think she'll be there regardless of having the qualifying standard

At some point I reckon she'll emulate Jonathan Edwards and abandon her principles at least on the track. But probably not this year.

        • u20s Ed Bird and James Dargan get the Euro standard with big pbs of 8.03.52 and 8.04.53 over 3000. Corey Campbell already had the standard but gains a new pb of 8.06.46, and previous UK u20 lead Conan Harper also pbs with 8.07.35.

Just watched her race. It's at 1:07.08 on this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cL8vSdzyNSQ
Last season when she ran one race (after her February injury and major surgery) and clocked 23.45s in late August, I thought she would be a threat this season. I am not so sure now and wonder if she will ever regain the promise of 2019. Let me be clear I am not writing her off. Amy just doesn't look like the same athlete, but it is still early season.

Too soon to tell, I think, but I don't have any immediate expectations for her.

Ehh, hard to gauge how well she's going when everybody else in the race is a bloke. (Though obviously at her 2019 best, she would have been a bit close to them at the end.)
I'm going to reserve judgement until I see her racing against other women.

We might not see the best of Hunt until after her studies are finished. A tough juggling act

          • Not a result, but just commenting on an amusing error on both the World and European Athletics ranking pages. For some reason they have Amy Hunt as being born in 2004, not the correct year of 2002, meaning that Hunt is currently appearing on the U20 ranking tables on both websites. Hopefully someone on there realises the error and fixes it promptly.

            • Exciting breakthrough for 21yo decathlete Jack Turner. Ian Hodge reports he scored 8011, previous best being 7659 two years ago.

Another big pb for fellow u23 Joel McFarlane, 7661.

            • 51.84 for Amber Anning in the heats of the SEC champs, coincidentally the same as she ran in the same heats indoors, but this time it fails to make the final. (The US's very talented hurdler Britton Wilson ran 49.40 to lead the qualifiers in the flat 400.)

A shame Amber had that injury during the indoors. But at least things are going in the right direction now. It might mean she actually runs faster longer into the summer and puts more of a focus on reaching the worlds?

Helped by the wind in the 100m and LJ, but that's still a big 100m improvement. He was also a long way down on his HJ best. PBs add up to 8333 now (with wind-adjusted 100m taken into account). Clearly an improving athlete.

The breakdown of Turner's individual performances..

100m - 10.44 (+2.9) 989 points. Would have been a massive PB by nearly half a second but for the wind

Long jump - 7.67m (+2.3) 977 points. Though over the wind limit, it's the second longest jump he's achieved in any conditions behind his recent 7.79m PB from a month ago. It's also his longest LJ during a decathlon.

Shot put - 12.75m 652 points. One of the few low points in an otherwise excellent showing. If he'd replicated his recent shot put PB of 13.43m, then he'd be over 8100+ points.

High jump - 1.92m 731 points. An outdoor season's best, but if Turner wants to really start stepping up into world class, he's going to have to replicate the 2m+ jumps he's managed to do indoors. He managed it last year.

400m - 48.14 902 points. PB by 2/10ths and anything approaching sub-48 seconds in a decathlon is world class.

110m hurdles - 14.42 (+3.3) 921 points. Turner's second fastest run over the high hurdles regardless of wind conditions.

                Discus - 43.31m 732 points. Another PB.

Pole Vault - 4.85m 865 points. The third PB of the decathlon and a big one too, adding 15cm to his previous 4.70m best from earlier this year.

Javelin - 50.85m 601 points. This and the shot put are his two main weaknesses. Throwing the javelin barely over 50m is just not gonna cut it. Hopefully Turner will work on that in the coming years.

                1500m - 4:46.25 641 points.

Discus is actually fine enough for a decathlete, but the other two are indeed pretty bad.

              • I think the overall wind readings mean this won’t count for records/PB, but he’s getting close. Between him, Sam, Harry, Lewis and Ollie, hopefully they stay fit and healthy and push each other on

Not if no individual event was over +4.0, assuming EA rules and WA rules are the same!

                  My understanding is:
1 - all events less than +2.0 - everything (record, qualifying) good to go
2 - some events over +2.0 but average wind (total wind speed divided by total events with wind counted) below +2.0 and no individual event above +4.0 - use as qualifying score, but no record
3 - some events over +2.0 including at least one with more than +4.0, even if average is below +2.0 - no qualifying score, no record

That's heartening. Let's hope for improvement especially in the technical field stuff
