    That's it, that's the thread...

Name a better competitor on GB history? In terms of getting the most out of themselves when it counted?

Not taking anything away - but Craig Rutherford.

I believe you mean "Greg" Rutherford.

Just to put Jazz’s major championship "clutch" performances over the years into a little perspective:

2014 Commonwealths – moved from 3rd to 2nd in last round.
2016 Olympics – qualified for final on last jump, finished 8th in final.
2018 Commonwealths – qualified for final on last jump, finished 7th in final.
2018 Europeans – qualified for final on last jump, moved from 4th to 3rd in last round but was edged out by Bekh-Romanchuk.
2020 Olympics – qualified for final on last jump, finished 8th in final.
2022 Worlds – qualified for final on final jump, pushed out of top 8 in final in 3rd round by eventual champion Mihambo.
2022 Europeans – moved from 5th to 3rd in last round and this time got the bronze.
2023 European Indoors – moved from 4th to 1st in penultimate round with first ever 7m jump indoors by GB female.

Thank you, beergut, this clearly highlights the mental fortitude Ms. Sawyers has shown in the past...

There have been plenty of clutch jumps in national championships and Grand Prixs too

It's also that almost invariably her SB is in a champs - definitely been the case for a lot of those listed above (along with various U20 and U23 medals).

I would rate this performance by 'Captain' Jaz as the best I have seen by a female UK Athlete indoors in a jump, nay, field event in my entire experience of watching the sport, so not far off 50 years. [with only Nicola Sanders maybe surpassing it as my favourite ever indoor performance period]...

I have commented in the past, on other threads, about my admiration for Ms. Sawyers but MysteryBrick put it even better than I could ... but unless one has stood close to Jazmin Sawyers, in real life, one might not be aware of her 'slight' stature [the likes of KJT, Ugen et al tower over her] and so a 7m is almost gravity defying!

As I said elsewhere ... UK Athletics need to bottle whatever it is that this young lady exudes!

If referring to my post, Philipo, might I ask you to name a more impressive performance by a female UK Athlete indoors, competing in a field event, ever... I look forward to your suggestion(s).

I have been posting my admiration for the maximisation of talent that Ms. Sawyers brings to competition for a number of years.

I cant be bothered to dig out the relevant posts but I clearly recall one where I extolled the virtues of Ms. Sawyers and Sophie Mckinna [it was prior to her merry-go-round in technique so at least 2 seasons ago] and suggested both be studied by other British athletes for sheer effort and determination. [I accept Ms. Mckinna has tried to undermine my faith in her] and at the time pointed to a certain Ms. Lake who would benefit from learning from both [and perhaps even more so now ]...

As others have noted Ms. Sawyers has demonstrated time and time again [see beergut's list above] the ability to produce a 'clutch' jump when most needed... though it hasn't often translated into silverware, I grant you, but that is why this performance is so much welcome.

Captain Jaz has continued to train and graft and believe when it would have been much easier [and far more lucrative] to take up a career in media [multiple 'celebrity' shows certainly beckon]. Moreover, as I mentioned above and previously, and another poster noted far more eloquently, Ms. Sawyers must be the shortest long jumper ever to achieve 7m...

Hence I feel more than validated to suggest UK Athletics should be harnessing her talent in a way that might inspire others.

Anyway, philipo, at least we agree that Stefi Reid was a very welcome addition to the commentary team [though the Beeb still persist in employing the worst one ever...]

ps Please also see RunUnlimited's excellent post #166, on the European Indoors thread, for further supporting evidence ...

How tall is Jaz Sawyers. Her height is listed as 5'3" or 5'4", which surprised me. Her 1.77 HJ at 14 is impressive.

I don't know the exact height, but I am not a tall man, and the time I stood near to her at Lea Valley indoors, was a few years back during her 'big hair' period, and I was very struck how slight of stature she was for a long jumper.

Maybe Ashia Hansen winning the 1998 Euro Indoors with a WR of 15.16, following up with the World Indoors the next season.

But outside that, huge respect to Sawyers for finally getting the title she has worked so hard for over the years. From what I've seen, it couldn't have happened to a nicer person too.

Yep, fchd, that's a very good call, and to my shame overlooked/forgotten... but apart from that [said in an similar reposte as that to be found in 'Life of Brian' when someone clearly comes up with a better answer LOL]

Your comment reminded me of Ashia's golden summer of 2002 winning the Commonwealths and Europeans on the last jumps. I'd forgotten all about that.

Fabulous performance from Sawyers. Definitely punches above her weight and seems to have a good mindset when the pressure’s on (although whether she should have put herself in the position where she needed all those last ditch qualifying jumps is another matter….).

She’s jumped 7m in neutral conditions and logic says that outdoors she could go further with a helpful wind. Huge improvement on her previous best of 6.90 (+1.9).

Celebrate the moment, obviously. My question is whether this was a material breakthrough or simply her day of days. I suspect the latter but either way she has set a new benchmark for her to be judged against. Let’s see what the outdoor season brings.

Pleased for Aston Moore, who also looks after KJT's LJ. Now, if he can get Kat jumping 7 metres, he'd deserve a knighthood.

Yeah, I gotta say, Ashia Hansen in 1998 was a tad more impressive overall. She's still 3rd on the world all time list with that effort, only bettered by the phenom that is Yulimar Rojas, and the Russian self-propelled drug lab that was Tatyana Lebedeva. Aside from Rojas - and if you ignore Lebedeva's dubiously allowed marks - only Olga Rypakova (15.14m - 2010), and *two* other women have jumped over 15 meters indoors in the world since then (Marija Sestak's outright Slovenian NR 15.08m and Yargelis Savigne's 15.05m to win the WIC, both in 2008).

But that takes nothing away from Jazmin's achievement last night. She herself joins a pretty exclusive club as she's just the 15th European woman to jump 7 meters or better indoors - the 7th to do so since the turn of the century - and Sawyers now becomes the 19th woman ever to do so overall. Not bad at all if you ask me!
