  • 2023 European Indoor Championships (Istanbul, 2- 5 March)

Action kicks off tomorrow at 4pm UK time with quite a meaty Day Zero, full of mid-distance heats and field qualies - so full that they could have made it Day 1 I think.

Timetable, Startlists & Live Results at https://istanbul23results.european-a...y-schedule.htm (Free registration required if you didn't already do it for Munich 2022)

The BBC coverage times & channels are listed at

At 2pm every day on the European Athletics YouTube channel there'll be a 30 minute preview show hosted by Ellen Ellard & Harry A-A.

Since it's only 4 days my own opinion is that one thread will suffice rather than having new threads each day.

    Side prediction.
Learmonth wins Heat 4 then finishes last in the Semi-F.

      Oooof! Harsh, but possibly fair.

Admittedly, he has run well so far this winter season. Hopefully that form holds up here in Istanbul.

Did anyone have “Confidently front-runs then gets sucker-punched in the last 10m”?

Disappointment for Ireland as Mark English DNS in heat 2 of the men's 800m. A shame, since he'd been running so well recently.

And Saul Ordonez looking completely different from the man who won in the Madrid Indoor Tour a week or so ago and trails in last in the heat itself. He is out. Borkowski and Rinne go through.

Disappointment for scotland as learmonth participates

2023 European no.1 De Smet is out in the heats of the 800m. Guy Learmonth is through as a non-auto qualifier.

Some surprise athletes not making it out of the heat. Learmonth ran that sensibly.

Smart qualification race from Issy Boffey there, winning heat 1 in 2:03 and bits.

            Canny run by Learmonth. Respect.
            Disappointment delayed.

Possible shock brewing in the high jump as hot favourite Mahuchikh is on 2 fouls with her opening height in the Q competition. Morgan Lake meanwhile, has so far garnered a perfect card with her opening 2 jumps.

Mahuchikh dodges a bullet... On two fouls, she decided to forego her final attempt at 1.87m and go all in on a one shot attempt at clearing 1.91m... which she managed comfortable.

Methinks Keely Hodgkinson is going to be responsible for a BUNCH of PBs in these championships.... She serenely qualifies for the 800m semi-finals at a canter, easily the quickest one so far in 2:01.

                  And Fabbri on 2 fouls
I put him in my top 3. !!

Another shock, this time in the men's shot put, as Poland's Haratyk no marks in qualifying. Looking nothing like the thrower at the Polish Indoor Champs a week or so ago.

Hannah Nuttall and Melissa Courtney-Bryant both safely make it through into the 3000m final.

Earlier, Morgan Lake managed to make the women's high jump final, with a dramatic, last gasp attempt at 1.91m.

And Mahuchikh failed twice at 1.87m before succeeding at 1.91m!

                        Very professional qualification from Mills
