  • Poorly translated but interesting article on Ceccarelli and his coach from a couple of weeks ago: The rise of Samuele Ceccarelli | The paper - News in Italy

    • I think it’s charitable to describe Prescod as inconsistent. His performances in big races are of a consistent standard.

Shame - astonishing level of talent. Bet his top end speed, relaxed, under no pressure, is faster than even Christie’s.

      • Prescod reminding me that I was a bit harsh on Neita yesterday - at least her underperformances still get a medal! I'd thought I was being a tad optimistic with my predictions but he was running so consistently fast, surely this would be the time he reproduced it when it mattered? Sigh. Italy sure has some impressive sprinters lately though, I've never even heard of Ceccarelli (or if I have, he's failed to register in my brain until now), that's quite some breakthrough he's had this year.

Shame that came after the w1500, as Muir's performance of getting a good win even when clearly not at her best would've been the perfect comeback from that disappointment. I enjoyed the 400 finals too; Bol is fantastic and only Warholm could get away with overcooking the first 200 that much and still hold on to win, I love watching him.

        • I think he was running for gold or nothing and when that went, he gave up, when he may still have got a medal - which would have been a good thing to leave with, instead of DFL! It’s sort of a good mentality…but only once you’ve got some hardware in your career!

          • Morgan Lake crashes out of the high jump final with 3 failures at 1.91m.

            Very disappointing.

Perhaps she only really likes jumping in the venue she set the UK record at, because she only seems capable of jumping well there....

            • David King manages to make it into the 60mH final, coming 4th in the 2nd semi-final and qualifying well in 7.68

              • The mention of RP in the same sentence as Christie is ludicrous. Olympic and world champion. Prescod cannot perform under pressure ,so what is the point of talking about his so called talent. If he can't compete at the top level he could always run at local club level. There is a bundle of crap talked about his top speed when he is relaxed.!

                • To be fair, if the conversation is about talent, it makes absolute sense to speak about the likes of Prescod and Christie together. If people are comparing them for for big game temperament, it would have to be to say they are (currently) opposites - but Christie might actually be an excellent model of comparison in terms of his own youth / journey to the top - the lack of focus, the chip on the shoulder that hurt themselves more than anyone else, up until Christie’s “lightbulb moment” - both very similar!

Exactly where my thoughts are on this.

                • Oh dear oh dear, Morgan. Not the first time she has under performed on the big occasion (it might not be completely unfair to ask when hasn't she), but a medal, possibly silver but easily bronze (which was won with 1.94) was right there for the taking.

It seems to be a psychological issue.

Precisely. That's the problem.there has always been athletes who cannot replicate their best when the pressure is on.

                      I find your post weird
Prescod has done nothing yet you think comparison with our leadingng sprinter for the period is justified. Utterly nonsense . I am not concerned with the stuff about chip on shoulder shoulder allegation. Christie achieved, Prescod is a non achiever

Which bit did you find weird? Lots of people with the same talent levels will have different careers. Despite all of the issues people have laid at Prescod’s door, he’s still run 9.9x and 6.4x - you can’t deny that the man has talent. Literally no one on this thread has said the two have comparable careers - some might say that it is ‘weird’ that you keep saying that anyone does. I see lots of people saying Prescod has not achieved his potential - but Christie was in exactly the same boat early on in his career

Talent is not the same as achievements. This shouldn't be a difficult thing to understand.
By a similar token, Max Burgin has to be one of the most talented 800m runners GB has ever seen, based on the times he has run and the manner he has run them in, even though he has never even toed the start line at a major.

Prescod’s pb is 6/100ths slower than Christie’s. By 1993 Christie had a very good first 30 - certainly better than Prescod’s. That’s why I would assume by the time they both reached top speed at 60m, Prescod was probably running as fast or faster than Christie.

Oh, and Prescod’s pb was run into a headwind of -1.3.

                      • Prescod has one legal sub 10 since 2019, and Ostrava aside, his powerful finishes of 2017-18 have been absent in 21/22. He is a maddening athlete to follow, when I saw him run 10.04 in 2016, I'd never seen a British male sprinter with such raw talent, and yet here in Istanbul produces an abject performance when it matters, as has become the norm the last two years. My head says he'll run fast this year, but won't be a factor in Budapest.

                        • that 4 x 400 was nonsense, gb had to run an extra 3-4 metres at the first 2 changeovers

                          • I mean, I like to see relay runners getting involved in a scrap but GB bought knives to a gunfight there.... thought Higgins ran well, but Brier and Reardon went for holes that weren't there and got found wanting.

On the plus side, at least they got the baton round.

Changeover lanes are decided by position at 200m.
