Much respect to Sulek... Thiam is deserving of the WR ... but could there have been a brief window in time where KJT could have gone better ...hmmm, maybe not.

IIRC, the year she hit 5000 she threw a pretty pathetic 12.xx something in the shot and it had to be offset by a massive long jump. So...possibly, back then, but that was 6 years ago now.

Adrianna Sulek was the unratified WR-holder for 6.42 seconds !

Thiam and Sulek both break the world record! Adrianna has become such a favourite of mine, so much grit. And what is there even left to say about what a champ Nafi is? What a brilliant time to be a multis fan.

It does make me quite sad for Kat though, the British athlete most screwed over by COVID delaying Tokyo.

Adrianna has always been a gritty, tough heptathlete. She showed that back in the World U20s in 2018 where in the teeming rain (and behind Niamh Emerson's desperate battle with Sarah Lagger to claim the gold medal), Sulek hauled back the points deficit she had to Adriana Rodriquez after the javelin, with the run of her life at the time in the 800m. I still remember vividly watching her, sat on an official's chair next to the start/finish line exhausted, and surrounded by several of the other competitors.. and then her shrill scream of joy and disbelief when she was told the news that she'd actually won the bronze medal.

She has come a long way from the slight figure she was 5 years ago, that's for sure.

Jemma Reekie was also deprived of her best chance at Olympic gold.

Who is going to stop Thiam? Sulek broke the old pentathlon WR with a magnificent CB for the 800m of 2:07.17, edging over the old record by just a single point... a record that lasted just a few seconds as Thiam crossed the line in 2:13.60 and smashed Dobrynska's mark with 5055 points.....

      A penny for KJT's thoughts.....

Kat was not blessed by the gods of timing. She desperately needed Tokyo to be held in 2020. I think it's quite realistic to expect she could get back up to around 6600-6700 with uninterrupted training and no more setbacks, which in years gone by would see her in the fight for bronze and sometimes silver, but with Sulek and Hall emerging as world class talents very quickly and Vetter much improved, she'll now be looking at needing 6800+ to get in the mix and I just don't think it's possible on a reconstructed achilles, especially given that she's admitted the long jump has become a real struggle. I wanted better for her.

In the other Shot Put final Fanny Roos rescues 4 points for me, jumping up to Bronze in the final round.

Swings and roundabouts ! (But I see that 5 of the other 7 contestants had her 3rd too, so not much gained !)

Big under-performance by Jessica Schilder in 5th.

Curious, why are so many Portuguese athletes naturalised? 4/5 of their finalists tonight were born elsewhere and previously represented other nations.

Bronze was the expectation, but Neita is developing a habit of not performing in finals. I don't think I have ever seen a tidy run from her in a major final - CWG, Euros etc. Seems to panic after losing ground at the start.

Yet another sub-par performance by Neita in a final. So frustrating to watch.

Yup, sadly like clockwork... seems to lose all faith in her start in finals, then panic and fail to drive properly.

Daryll Neita *again* tightening up in a final and a poor-ish start cost her here. Fully deserved gold for Kambundji, equalling Nelli Cooman's CR from 1986 of 7 seconds flat.

Neita *HAS* to work on her starts.

*Has* to find a way to replicate what she does [in terms of times] in the heats, when it comes to the final... she has to find that marginal gain when under pressure ...

Dina Asher-Smith would have won that. I'm certain of it.

That will sting Neita for sure.

I was wondering whether she would or would she has pushed kambungi even faster. Would’ve been a great race in any case!

Don't get me wrong, Great Britain is currently going through it's greatest period in terms of women's sprinting ever, with 2 women running sub-11 seconds regularly and medalling at major championships... But Neita is *better* than what she showed in the final a few minutes ago, and she knows it too.

They had a fairly large empire so it's probably the natural switch for those from the ex-colonies (they may already be fluent in the language?) and then for others like Pichardo, I'm sure they're attracted by the warm weather when picking where to go.

Wow, what a day. Amazing pentathlon. Anna Hall's former WL seemed brilliant until today, but has been put well in the shade. The heptathlon in Budapest should be superb as well. (Holly Mills was disappointing of course, over 200 points down on her best.)

Gourley ran well in a tough race, but Ingebrigtsen is a superstar. (The tattoos make him look like a heroin addict though.) Poor George Mills has time on his side, and I liked his dogged determination.

Good run by Melissa Courtney Bryant, and a surprise win for Klein over her team mate.

Neita always seems to struggle in finals, but at least she got a medal. It could have been worse.

shes always managed a medal since her breakthrough, they should have probably been 2 golds and a silver rather than 3 bronzes based on semi final times

why are you certain?; I cannot see any basis for that. Kambunji is the world indoor champion and has run faster than Asher Smith.
