Says that Muir will wrap up her 2023 indoor campaign in Brum, so sounds like no Euro Indoors for her this time. Nothing to prove there after doing a double-double but would have still been great to see her add more medals to her trophy cabinet. Especially indoors I think she is formidable and her running style and tactics seem to suit indoors so well.

Japan are sending a pretty good team of 30 athletes to the Asian Indoor Championships, taking place in Astana, Kazakhstan from 10 to 12 February.

It's headlined by Yuki Hashioka (M LJ) and Ririka Hironaka (W 3000).

Hironaka's teammate in the 3000 is Yuma Yamamoto, a very good collegian with 8:52 & 15:16 outdoor bests. The Women's 1500 pair, Ran Urabe & Yume Goto, are Japan's two best after Nozomi Tanaka.

The men's 1500 team, Iizawa Kazuto & Nanami Arai, are a pair of 3:36 athletes (# 2 & # 4 Japanese A-T) and the 3000 pair are strong too - Yuta Bando is a 13:18 outdoor athlete and Keita Satoh ran 3:37 and 13:23 outdoors last year, aged 18 (both Japanese U20 records).

Yep, this will be the 9th edition (biennial) but it hasn't been held since 2018.

Anyone know more about this?

Seems that since 1/1/23 World Athletics are refusing to accept times & marks from NCAA meets for record or international qualification purposes. Seemingly the two bodies have different anti-doping & shoe rules. Will affect our athletes who are wanting to do both College & international champs, unless they can also get into WA meets.

There is no blanket ban on NCAA Meets but ALL meeting organisers now have to formally apply and have their meets registered with the World Athletics Calendar. it's not really motivated by the doping rules but more the competition manipulation which World Athletics and the AIU are clamping down on.

There seems to be teething problems in the US regarding this, caused by poor communication by USATF it seems. It's not going to matter in terms of champs qualification for indoors as NCAA athletes won't do Euro Indoors anyway. It does make the ranking lists a bit of a mess though.

I suspect that by outdoors much of this will be resolved; I would certainly expect to see most of the big college meets including the Conference Champs to be on the calendar although some smaller meets may not have got the memo. Coaches at the bigger colleges like LSU; USC and Florida where they are used to having athletes qualify and compete at major champs will certainly be pushing hard behind the scenes to make sure all the meetings they intend to take their squads to comply to the new rules.

In terms of winning marks it was a far-from-vintage Karlsruhe meeting.

Very nice run by George Mills though and a great battle in the final 150 of the 800 between Anita Horvat & Freweyni Hailu.

In the 3000 the two Martas, Perez and Garcia, were around 8:45, both well inside the 8:48 Euro Champs qualifying standard - an outright PB for Garcia and just outside her indoor PB for Perez.

The LILAC Grand Prix mid-D meeting in Spokane was very ho-hum for a Silver meeting. Noah Kibet's 1:46.74 win the best of the performances.

The big US action instead came at the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic with 2 American Records - Yared Nuguse 7:28.16 (faster than Fisher's outdoor NR) and Woody Kincaid, 12:51.61, taking 2 seconds off Fisher's indoor NR.
Behind them Sam Atkin ran a British Record, 7:31.97 (faster than Mo's outdoor NR) and Joe Klecker ran 12:54.99. There were also Dutch & German indoor NRs for Mike Foppen & Sam Parsons, both a little bit north of 13:10.
In the 800 Crayton Carrozza (USA; a new one to me) ran 1:46.28.

For 'A Final 2' of the 400 the commentator introduced Rabah Yousif like he's a superstar but it probably has more to do with him being a regular at Swedish meetings. Anyway, the race was carnage with only 1 of the 4 starters recording a time - Yousif one of two DNF's stumbling with 150 to go and 1 DQ for an athlete barging another off the track.

Nice to see racing here 3 of the Japanese mid-D team for the Asian Indoor Championships coming up in 2 weeks in Kazakhstan. For all 3 of them it was their first indoor race ever!

A smashing women's 800m race at the Meeting de l'Eure, Val de Reuil, France, saw home favourite Noelie Yarigo, who recently transferred allegiance from Benin to France, crash through the 2 minute barrier. She won in 1:59.29, a WL an indoor PB and a French indoor NR to boot. The 37 year old veteran overhauled long time leader, 2022 world U20 800m silver medallist Audrey Werro, in the closing stages coming off a very fast pace set in the opening couple of laps by the pace maker. Werro for her part, smashed the Swiss indoor U20 record with a 2:00.57 clocking, which moves her to 2nd on the European U20 all time list for the distance, behind Keely Hodgkinson's 1:59.03 set in 2021.

Such was the quality of the race, that 3rd, 4th and 5th all set PBs.

Jenny Selman however, was a disappointing 6th in 2:03.24.

Also at the same meeting, Hugues Fabrice Zango, triple jump world record holder indoors, opens his season with a bang with 2 efforts well over 17m. 17.27m in the opening round was followed with 17.48m in the 3rd round, a world lead. Cuba's Lazaro Martinez (17.16m) and Andy Diaz (16.91m) are 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Femke Bol set a World Best 1.05.63 over 500m at the New Balance meeting in the US.
