  • 6.75mi for Jazmin Sawyers. She's having a great indoors so far!

    Comment

  • Lewis Byng currently leads the shot put comp at the Reykjavik International Games with 18.09m in round 3. Serena Vincent, in her first competition of 2023, has a best of 15.79m so far.

Vincent improves to 15.96 in round 5.... then gets 16.15m in the 6th and final round! That's a very solid start to her season, her 7th best ever throw, indoors or outdoors.

    • Also at the RIG meeting, Lee Thompson runs his 3rd fastest 200m ever, indoors or outdoors, with an 21.27 SB, behind an Icelandic indoor NR from Kolbeinn Hodur Gunnarasson, who crossed the line in 21.03.

      • Just seen Rhasidat Adeleke's 50.45 run over 400m. Is it just me or does she look like running sub 49 and getting a medal in Budapest this summer.

She could be in the mix, but (a) she has a long college season to negotiate first and (b), even without SMU it's an incredibly competitive event. I understand Sydney McLaughlin is planning to double for a start, and Femke Bol could do, plus there are the Dominicans, and drugs cheat Salwa Eid Nasser's ban will be up before Budapest.

A great and improving talent though, that goes without saying.

      • Can’t see any mention of a 20.35 from Lincoln a week or so ago in Manchester, backed up by a 20.00 yesterday.

        • It's been a pretty busy week/weekend of action for the Brits competing on the US NCCA track & field circuit, as the indoor season starts to really kick into gear. Some performances have already been mentioned on here by posters, but I'm bringing to light some other noteworthy ones that might have been missed.

New Mexico Collegiate Classic, Albuquerque, NM, 3-4 February

Brodie Young's first 400m of the season ends with a 46.92 clocking for the 19 year old yesterday, who is currently studying at New Mexico University. It was on the same afternoon that saw Yusuf Bizimana's (Texas at Austin) outright 800m PB on Friday and Tade Ojora's (USC) amazing 60m hurdles PB and victory.
Adam Clayton (Texas Tech) ran close to his PB with a 20.97 time in the 200m.

Tara Simpson-Sullivan (Rice) won the weight throw with 21.42m, her 2nd best ever effort with the implement.

WSC Open, Spokane, WA, 2-4 February

Louis Hinchliffe, who represented Great Britain at the 2021 European U20's in Tallinn over the 200m, and now is in his first year as a Washington State student athlete, ran his 4th 60m PB of the indoor season. He ran 6.77 in the heats, then 6.71 in the final. That moves him to =8th on the British 2023 standings and represents a near 2/10ths improvement from his previous lifetime best set last year (6.90).

Hinchcliffe would then return for the 200m and set a PB for that distance as well, 21.78

Just shows how young Carvell was in 2021 that he is still eligible for the 2023 European U20's!

If Faulds can get back to his 2021 levels of fitness, then I can see him definitely being on the 4x400m squad for Budapest. And as a medal threat at the European U23s too.
Not sure if Carvell could quite do that, but if he gets back to the same levels of fitness he showed that same year, he'd possibly be a medal contender in the individual 400m at the EU20s. Running 46.64 as a 16 year old is no mean feat, let's hope he's going to be in good shape come the outdoor season.

Looks like both Carvell and Faulds are skipping the indoor season.

As for Young, that is a fine start on the boards... Before this run, his indoor 400m PB was outside 50 seconds(!), so his development continues at a decent pace.

*If* Carvell, and particularly Faulds, do stay fit for the next few years, then GB have the spine of a very solid 4x400m squad going forward.

I hope both lads can progress this year. Skipping indoors may be a good thing. It's encouraging to hear Ed is back in training.

        • An interesting one - Nikki Manson, best known as a HJer, did a pen earlier this year, and LJed a big pb of 6.37 the other day.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Looks like Nikki is returning to her roots... she started out as a heptathlete in her junior days before specialising in the high jump. As recently as 2021 Manson jumped 1.90m, and set her PB of 1.93m in 2019.

She's obviously a top class high jumper and is actually not too bad with the javelin, having a PB over 41 meters (though that was from 2019). The long jump is more than decent as well. Her shot put is a weakness, sure, but there are more dedicated heptathletes who have PBs under Manson's 10m+ one. The real unknowns are the 200m and 100m hurdles - the last time she had recorded performances for either was back as an U17 in 2011! At least with the latter discipline she's run some 60m hurdles in recent years, though Manson hasn't broken 9 seconds yet (9.05 PB, 2022)
And finally, her 800m is pretty bad... so bad that the 2:34.82 she ran in early January was a PB by about 16 seconds (Admittedly, it was Manson's first 800m run since 2012!)

Whether this switch back to multi events will last will be interesting to see.

Well spotted and interesting observations ... I did suggest, back end of last season, that Morgan Lake had to 'refresh' and suggested winter training for an indoor pen... I can't take credit for her, very welcome, recent mark of 1.99m [anyone seen any footage?] unless she did take up my idea though... but I applaud any athlete who tries a different event ...

        • Keeley Hodgkinson 1:57.87 in Toruń WL. Was looking for a bit more, but a couple more chances coming.

Neita 7.13 SB in the 60m, all the other British performances a bit except another good 1500m from George Hill.

A mark of how good Keely is that an opener indoors that would put her 8th on the UK outdoor all-time list, and 13th on the World all-time Indoor list, is disappointing.

I think judging by her post-race interview that Keely herself was hoping for a slightly quicker time than she achieved, like possibly breaking her British record and/or trying to go sub 1:57 indoors. All in all though, that was a very composed performance from Hodgkinson, especially since she left one of her nemesis's from last year, Mary Moraa, in the dust too.

Perhaps an unexpected PB for Noelie Yarigo of Benin in 2nd at age 37! Last year's wonder Mary Moraa way back in fourth.

Fair enough, but how often do athletes from Benin run indoors?

        • 6.61 for Charlie Dobson, 6.62 for Andy Robertson and 6.63 for Eugene Amo Dadzie in France. UK champs could be quite competitive.

Much better from Dobson after an underwhelming performance in Ostrava last week, and the same too for Robertson after getting upstaged by 18 year old Odamtten in Lee Valley. Amo Dadzie's late blossoming continues too. It'll definitely be a tasty 60m showdown in Birmingham at the UK Champs, I agree Occasional Hope.

        • Via Ian Hodge, at Lee Valley, Jessie Knight improves her 400m season's best to 52.31 as she beat Laviai Nielsen's 52.55 to the line. As with the men's 60m at the upcoming UK Indoor Championships, the domestic battle for an individual spot for the 400m squad at the European Indoors, is looking like it'll be a very competitive one.

Dare I say it, but Prescod's looking good. He can tidy that up and run a pb in an hour.

          • Also, Hurdler Miguel Perera pb’d again yesterday, 7.81.
