  • I'm seeing a 17.08 pb for Sarah Omoregie in the shot yesterday in the US.

    • Another good result from one of our promising crop of u20 sprint hurdlers: 7.78 for Daniel Castilla in Spain yesterday, apparently over the senior hurdles.

Yeah I was going to ask about this Daniel Castilla kid on here. I first noticed his results appearing on Po10 last year and initially thought that GB had unearthed yet another promising hurdler. But then I noticed all of his results were either in La Palma or Mallorca, or basically in Spain. None in Great Britain. As Loop-guru says, when you go to his WA entry, it has him down as a Spanish national, and any searches on Google just show him competing in Spain, with nothing linking him to Britain that I could find.

So just *why* he's on Power of 10 is a mystery to me.

He could be a dual national. but it does look as if his primary allegiance is to Spain.

If that was the case OH then on Po10 they would usually mention the athletics club he runs for, and then the country. All we have for Castilla is "Unattached" for his club and "Unknown Region" for the region he is in. Weird.

I'll try and do some further digging to see if there is any mention of dual-citizenship and/or nationality.

Well, he has an Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/danicastilla.tf/ and even a YouTube channel which shows his athletic exploits https://www.youtube.com/@danicastillatf/videos which are kind of interesting, as we get a look behind the scenes at how an athlete preps for races.

But still no sign of any evidence he is a dual national yet.

    • U23 Jack Turner scored 5794 in the heptathlon in the US, a 300 point PB (admittedly he didn't do one last year). Include PBs in the 60 m (7.03), hurdles (8.19) and 1000m.

If he can match that outdoors, he could be knocking on the door of 8000 this year.

      • Also in the US, u23 Ore Adamson jumped outright PBs in both LJ (6.46) and TJ (12.80).

That's a big improvement in the long jump... her previous PB was 6.23m set in 2019 as an U20, so that is quite a jump there.

      • (Hmm, it would appear that the cut off date has been and gone already, thanks to Stew-Coach comment. Oh well. I'll remove the comment then since it doesn't really apply anymore.)

        • Selection policy stated cut off was 19th for UK athletes, as selection discussions were over the weekend at the champs.

19th was the cut off for qualifying for everyone across Europe. British selections due to be announced tomorrow. I think we'll probably get the final entry lists from European Athletics in the next few days also.

        • Daniel Castilla competes for Spain tomorrow in the Junior meet in Madrid.

        • Kyle Langford manages a marginal 800m SB in the Madrid World Indoor Gold Meeting, coming 3rd behind race winner Mark English (1:46.57 SB), and Pablo Sanchez-Valladares (1:46.83, PB), in 1:46.93.

Castilla went on to set a new Spanish U20 record in that DNA Meeting, running 7.67 to narrowly beat GB's Daniel Goriola, who set yet another 60mH PB of 7.69.

U20 hurdling in the outdoor season is going to be very, very interesting. You have the trio of very talented Brits coming through, Goriola, Noah Hanson and Jaiden Dean, who not only look set to substantially lower their 110mH PBs this season, but also be a major factor at the upcoming EU20 Championships. Then you have current world U20 60mH leader Enzo Diessl (AUT), Maxime Moitie-Chanois (FRA), Patryk Kamionek (POL) and now Castilla, all looking very good prospects too.... Should make for a fun summer of U20 high hurdling on the continent at the very least.

He's got a lot of work to do, but I really rate Goriola. The way he batters hurdles and keeps on going. I keep having Roger Kingdom flashbacks.

          • A name that's perhaps not familiar to most on here, but last night in the NCAA, Alex Still set a new Scottish pentathlon record of 4177 at the ACC Indoor Championships. The 22 year old has been competing in America since 2017, and living there since 2018 as a student of Virginia University. Up until now, she has been fairly low key and not really made much impression as a junior, but Still has gradually improved as an U23 athlete. In 2021, she improved her heptathlon PB by more than 400 points to 5363, and would do so again in 2022, scoring 5481 at the ACC Outdoor Championships. And now this year, she's breeched the 4000 point barrier in the pentathlon for the first time in January at the Hokie Invitational (4083), before her landmark contest last night.

I can't believe the Scottish Pentathlon record was that low! But the Hep is only 5803 so it tracks. With a fair wind and a better javelin she could beat that in the summer.

Still's gradual improvement is tracking for her to get into the 5600-5700 point range for the heptathlon, which would be pretty decent for someone who before 2021 had a heptathlon points PB of 4928 (aged 17, 2017). I'm not sure she'll get to the Scottish record though.

          • It looked like a 7.29 PB for Joy Eze to win the BUCS title, but annoyingly rounded down to equal he previous pb of 7.31. David Morgan-Harrison won the men's title in a marginal pb of 6.66.

Just to add that behind Eze in that 60m final, Leonie Ashmeade also set a PB in 2nd place of 7.37, while Alyson Bell also lowered her 60m PB down to 7.38 in 3rd place.

          • Big pb of 8.22 for heptathlete Jodie Smith (down from 8.33) to beat Marli Jessop over the 60 hurdles at BUCS.

            • Ian Hodge reports a 7.87 PB and UK lead for LJer Jake Burkey.

That makes three PBs this year, out of five competitions. He's moved over to a US uni (for postgrad?) and it seems to have made a big difference. All at altitude, though, I think.

Also at the BUCS Indoor Championships, in qualifying for the women's triple jump, U20 Lateefah Agbermemi produced a big PB jump with her final effort, going over 12m for the first time with 12.23 to go 5th in the current UK U20 rankings.

The men's 60m hurdles saw rapidly improving U23 Joseph Agbodza set two lifetime bests to win his first BUCS title. In the heats, he narrowly came 2nd behind experienced GB and England athlete Cameron Fillery (7.94) in 7.95, the first time he'd run sub 8 seconds for the 60mH. Then in the final, he went quicker still, beating Spaniard Angel Diaz in 7.85 to win the title. He goes into 8th on the UK 2023 rankings lists and the 21 year old, who appears to have been a late arrival to the sport, (having only started in 2019 according to Agbodza's Po10 page) will be looking to break the 14 second barrier for 110mH come the spring and summer.

Meanwhile, in the women's shot put qualifying behind specialist Serena Vincent who reached the final easily with her opening effort of 15.99m, there were several heptathletes also performing - among them, we saw the continued return from injury of Abigail Pawlett who would have been delighted to set a 13.79m PB, Jade O'Dowda opening her 2023 with a solid 13.31m shot put and most heartening of all, Niamh Emerson looking fit and healthy, launching the shot out to 13.61m.

Good stuff. I only watched the last few races yesterday as I was at work earlier, but it seems to me the standard at BUCS has improved.

              • Blatant FS for Azu. I hope it gets it out of his system before Euros.

I like the longer hair on Adam Gemili.

Surprised this is an all British field; I thought the indoor tour final was supposed to be a bit more high end.

This is the pre-show, it’s not part of the official event.

But why no official men's 60 in the programme?
