  • Back In Sheffield, there have been fast times in the 200m finals. Aliyah Afolabi won the gold in 24.64, her 3rd consecutive PB and taking over a second off the time she came into the championships with.
The U15 boys final was won by Max Evans, a PB of 22.43, while the U17 men's race was a tight affair between Josh Berry and Aron Tugwell, with Berry edging it in 21.72.

In the U17 women's final, Callia Downey defeated talented Welsh youngster Nell Desir in a PB of 24.16.

And in the big match up of the World U20 teammates, Success Eduan and Sophie Walton, it was Eduan retaining the title she won last year, running 23.54, a big season's best. Walton takes silver in 23.77

        • Fantastic run by Thea Brown to win the u17 hurdles with a CR and national u17 record 8.40.

          • Thea Brown, smashes the UK U17 record for 60m hurdles, winning the race by a huge margin and going 8.39! That also takes down the championship record set by Pippa Earley back in 2017 (a talented multi event athlete who seems to be lost to athletics unfortunately). Special run from a special talent!

Goriola's time was rounded up to 7.72, but still a PB that moves him up to =2nd on the world U20 rankings this year. Noah Hansen also set a PB of 7.77 and goes to solo 5th in the world, and Rueben Hedman knocked a couple of hundredths off his PB to claim the final podium place in 7.90.

Jaiden Dean, after running so well in the heats, wasn't able to reproduce the same form in the final and ended up in 4th place with 7.94.

Still, GB have a very good group of hurdlers coming through in the junior ranks. It should be an interesting 2023 to see how well they'll do during the outdoor season.

Also in Dortmund, World U20 finalist Abigail Ives, who turned 19 last week, came 3rd in the 800m A race in a 2:03.92 SB, while Ellie Baker was 2nd in the 1500m race, clocking 4:10.30.

Cindy Sember, running as a guest, came 2nd in the 60m hurdles open race in a UK leading 8.11.

Isabel Wakefield, at the Tiger Paw Invitational on Friday and Saturday, ran a new 60m hurdles PB of 8.19 and registered a 6.20m long jump, her =2nd best distance she has managed so far.

That takes down Steve Binns long standing U23 indoor NR of 13:29.28 set nearly 41 years ago exactly! It's also puts Hicks 6th on the UK all time list indoors.

                          • Here’s a question. Do we have anyone active in the 60m hurdles this year? Don’t recall seeing any of our known names in any of the meets I’ve seen.

                            Keely 1:57.72 WL

A fair few athletes using these Championships to make their season's debuts... Nia-Wedderburn-Goodison would be one to watch, following her very successful 2022. And does Andrew Pozzi still have what it takes to be a factor in major competition?

It is intermittently on BBC RB but dipping in & out with other sports. I guess all streamed on IPlayer, but not confirmed yet.

                          • KH was a bit angry with herself again after that totally dominant world-leading run. Of course all the conditions have to align to get the records, but it is starting to feel, like it did for Ovett and Coe back in their golden days, that she regularly toes the line with the record within her abilities. In which case, if she stays fit, all the records will come.
It is not a huge stretch to put 1:57 indoors with 1:55 outdoors, and KH apparently runs 1:57s for fun now. That is the kind of platform that is needed.

Meanwhile Dasher won her final in Belgrade in 7.13, in a race compromised by multiple issues at the start.

As a measure of Hodgkinson's current form, she became the first runner to have back-to-back sub 1:58 minute 800m performances indoors since Maria Mutola managed the feat, all the way back in 1999, 24 years ago!
Could she break the British indoor record at the European Indoors? Or maybe do so in the World Indoor Tour Final in Birmingham? Those would be perfect stages to do it at certainly.

As for DAS, she would have run sub 7.10 in Belgrade, but for all the issues with false starts yesterday. I think we could see something pretty swift, also at the World Indoor Tour Final.... the first Brit to go under 7 seconds perhaps?
                          Working...
