The day of the DAS, or not! My money's on Kambundji in the women's 100m. Based on her Commonwealth Games performance, not convinced DN can cope with the pressure in a final when she is one of the favourites.

That is one of the troubles with no proper first round : you don't get an early look at the favourites. I honestly have no idea until we see what they look like in the semis. But I do fancy DAS as long as she hasn't any ongoing issues from the WC. Will be very interested to see how Neita performs : she has a fast one alongside her in her semi in Luckenkemper so will have some practice in making sure she nails the start...might need to with the sudden death 2 + 2 rule.

Drama in the decathlon. Abele DQ.

David King getting upstaged by Swiss Findley Gaio in the heat's of the 110m hurdles, Gaio more known as the no.2 decathlete behind Ehammer, but he beat the specialist hurdler in King with a PB of 13.46 (+0.6m/s), while King ran 13.63. Both are through to the semi finals.

I wonder if David King has ever considered moving to 400h ... he ran an indoor 300 flat in Jan of this year [2022], 35.37. Surely it is worth a try.

I wonder if that is a precursor...? He's always struck me as someone lacking both the top end speed and height to be a top class 110 hurdler, who nevertheless absolutely gets the most out of himself.

That's pretty impressive as I assume he was doing that off 110H training. His only 400 on Power of 10 was done in an octathlon when he was 15 and Devon's number 2 under 17 100 hurdler.

And in the final heat, Miguel Perera, running for the first time in a GB & NI vest, makes it into the semi finals with a 13.72 (-0.2m/s) for 3rd place, in a tight race where the winner, Gregor Traber of Germany, edged it with 13.69.

Easy qualification for Laura Muir, winning the opening heat of the 1500m comfortably. Melissa Courtney-Bryant though was run well out of it, her return to action this year continuing to be less than satisfactory for her.

It looks like we'll have two finalists in the women's long jump, as CWG 4th placer Jaz Sawyers is currently in 5th overall, while Jahisha Thomas, making her international debut, jumps a 6.57m season's best in the final round of her quali group to be in 7th overall.

Well done to Thomas in particular. Easy to get over awed and I think she’s done a college season?

Irozuru a shadow of her former self - I suspect this may be her last international appearance for GB.

Although 2.5 Brits in the final with Sawyers, Thomas (in an SB) and Iapichino.

I think Irozuru's final round, last ditch, qualifying jump in Birmingham that got her into the Commonwealth long jump final, was likely her last hurrah. But she should be praised for the way she came back into the sport after retiring, and making Olympic and World finals, as well as a World Indoors final since then, is no mean feat. If this is the last we see of her, then she can hold her head high with what she's achieved.

100% agreed. Coming back from a career-threatening injury takes a huge amount.

Very poor 34.92 DT for Ehammer. Puts pressure on the PV where he has something of a history of no-heighting.

Yeah, that wasn't great from Ehammer, definitely his first bad event of this decathlon so far. How he's still not learned a slightly more competent technique (it has virtually not changed since his U20 days) is a mystery. Kaul will be looking at that and thinking to himself he is right in this.

I would like to see Katie Snowden be a little less passive as a racer. Ellie Baker sneaks through with a commendable PB reaping the benefit of being in heat 2.

I know exactly what you mean trickstat - she reminds me of past athletes like Dobriskey who would let races take them along rather than ever seizing the bull by the horns.

I suspect she’d take Dobriskey’s career quite happily, if it were offered!

Dobriskey's decent finish helped her get a WC medal but I think there were times when perhaps she ought to have won lesser races but didn't.

Snowden to me runs as if she is thinking, "I am an athlete who is on the fringe of being world-class and that is where I belong". She rarely runs appallingly in a significant race but I would to see her at least try running a little further up the field, if only to see what happens.

You know, I think that when Kilty eventually retires, that rather than being a BBC pundit (which he has been very good at), he might actually go into coaching. He appears to be a very analytical brain, and understands the finer details of what is needed, as he demonstrated as he reviewed David King's race.

Good shout. Hannah England much improved since trials in comms too - She has done a good job of not tripping over her own tongue dealing with some tricky names in the walks this morning. She has a nice voice for comms too, definite potential.

The heat of the hurdles where he was DQ now shows "under protest". Will they give him a solo run to give him a time. Ah yes they are

That's exactly what Abele is getting. They said that the judges couldn't confirm that Abele's feet had left the timing pads before the 0.100 needed for a false start, so he's getting another chance.

It wasn't the ideal situation for what is almost certainly his last decathlon.

Abele finishes the re-run 110m hurdles to huge cheers, in 14.51. The 2018 champion, walking off in tears of happiness and relief rather than the despairing tears he had with his initial false start earlier in the morning.

That was a nice moment for the athlete and the crowd but does that suggest the false start technology is unreliable?

            • #15
Poor run from Coleman in a dramatic first heat of the men's 3000m steeplechase, which saw the 18 year Axel Vang Christensen, the European U20 champion at this event last year, who was leading confidently in the early laps, smash into a hurdle on the backstraight and he was out of the race. However, more remarkable was the actions of Andorran Nahuel Carabana, their nation's first ever finalist and medallist at a European U23 champs, coming to the stricken Dane's aid and pulling him off the track to be attended to by the medical team. He sacrificed any chance of qualifying, but he resumed to complete the race, cheered home by the crowd who acknowledged his amazing act of fair sportsmanship and compassion.
