Birmingham CWG Day 6 - Sunday 7th

The medal table excluding the para events looks like so (no disrespect to any of the para athletes taking part, it’s just their medals tend to distort the medal table slightly as they are mainly won by Eng, Aus, NZ etc):

Jamaica and Australia are both on 3 silvers so it could be a close finish. though you’d expect Jamaica to edge it with good chances in the relays

Samukonga was always the wildcard in that race. He seems like a work in progress still but could become a danger to anyone in the next year or two.

Incredible run by Zambia's 19yo Muzala Samukonga. Not since Wayde van Niekirk's peak days have we had someone so willing to be stretchered off after a race!

It's a NR for Samukonga breaking Matete's 44.88 NR.

Massive disappointment for MHS.

Samukonga smashes the NR of 400m hurdle legend and 1991 World Champion Samuel Matete, set in the same year of that Tokyo gold medal win. And I believe Zambia's first gold medal on the track since Matete won the 400m hurdles gold in the 1994 CWG in Victoria. Good quality race overall, as bronze medallist Johnathan Jones (44.89) and 4th placer Boniface Mwersa (44.96 PB), all went under 45 seconds.

Just to add, Ugandan giant Haron Adoli, sets his 3rd consecutive lifetime best with 45.62.

I think the mistake MHS made was to kick slightly at 250 having run a strong first 200. Although he didn't fall part completely it left him vulnerable in the last 80m or so.
