  • The Birmingham 2022 Non Athletics Thread

This worked well I thought for Tokyo to have somewhere to talk about the non athletics part of the games, as I'm sure plenty of us are going to be watching other sports as well.

England have announced their flag bearers - https://teamengland.org/news/commonw...arers-revealed

I like the choice of Emily Campbell. Highlighting a successful athlete in a sport that doesn't always get the same level of attention in the UK as some others do can only help moving forward.

    should be interesting.

In regards to medals England will be looking to finish top of the medal table like Glasgow 14, but Australia are formidable (swimming and athletics arguably better than previous games). And last time they won 80 golds to England's 45.

prefer them over the olympics not sure why

Adding team sports has not helped the Comm Games. Even before the quota system the extra expense of teams impacted the number of selections for individual sports. It has also greatly increased the logistics and expense of hosting which must be a contributing factor to the reduced number of host city applicants. And really, what do beach volleyball and 3x3 basketball add to the Games?

All these extra sports do make for a bit of a circus I guess : and many of us won't be interested - but I imagine it is a thrill for those who participate in them. The problem is indeed the increased expense so I wonder if continued expansion is at all sustainable. And the fear that "traditional" sports will be reduced to offset - as we already see with quotas , and the removal of say , shooting from the programme. (Not a great fan of shooting , myself : but it has been in the Commonwealths for fifty years...)

I mean, some of the team sports include cricket, rugby and netball. all of those are sports which are predominantly played by Commonwealth nations anyway, so I don't see the problem with them being in the games.

Also - according to this article - https://www.insidethegames.biz/artic...till-available - 3x3 basketball is one of the more popular sports ticket wise.

As for the future, they've already said that future games will only have 2 compulsary sports - athletics and swimming. Everything else can be changed between editions.

Emily Campbell is an important figure in British sport. She is a great choice. ...And I'd also like to see her have a go at the shot. 17m underarm, perhaps?

Pleased for Alex. I wonder how inspired he was by running round Sutton Park

If I remember rightly the BBC coverage of the 2014 games was widely applauded in the athletics community, with entire field events shown on red button. Looks like we may get a repeat this time.

Katherine Merry, fresh back from Seattle, is filling in some time before the athletics start by commentating on the netball - doing Aus v Barbados at the moment.

Women's triathlon just about to start, if it's half as good as the men's it'll be a cracker.

Beth Potter representing Scotland in the triathlon - some might recall she ran the 10 000 at Rio 2016 for Team GB ...
