A great win from Brodie Williams in the 200 bk but only 5th for Luke Greenbank. He fell apart in the last 50 and was pretty incolsolable at the end.

And Ross Murdoch, the guy who had retired at the end of last year for 11 weeks, has won his 2nd bronze of these champs, his 3rd medal overall, and in his *weakest* event at that! He's a 200/100m breaststroker, not really a 50m exponent... and yet from lane 8, he gets the bronze.

If Ross decides to sign off with that, I wouldn't blame him at all. Well done to him!

I can't decide who I'm happiest for - Peaty or Murdoch. So chuffed for both of them.

England's women fall to a single point defeat to Canada at the buzzer in the 3x3 basketball. But the men win an OT thriller over Australia to take gold. The crowd were going mental. It's a sport on the rise folks.

In the organised chaos that is the mixed medley relay, Australia comfortable winners, Canada just pip England on the final stroke for silver.

wondering if England can catch up with Australia in regards of golds won. Certainly possible once Australia run out of swimming golds to win.

I have sometimes thought that Australia has something of a knack in athletics of producing athletes just good enough to win in events where the Commonwealth is weak. I'm not sure whether this feeling would stand up to rigorous statistical analysis though!

That might have been true historically. At the moment I think they have several athletes capable of winning anywhere. Mainly jumpers and throwers, but there is nothing parochial about their excellence. (Unfortunately. LOL.)

Their athletes seem to.turn up and win events where they have a chance. Thinking of Stenson and the marathon. Whereas in Gold Coast felt like it didn't help as much for the home nations

A couple of observations ... Am I correct in thinking that Emily Campbell did some 'athletics' ... A superstar, a role model, and media-gift, but lost to UK Athletics...

and funny how the universe spins... I am old enough to remember another English Commonwealth weighlifting star, but couldn't think of his first name, and at that very moment , there he appeared back stage, in a hug with Ms. Campbell ... Precious McKenzie

Please please please can we get her back? As someone said, she looks like she could flick a shot 17m underarm.

<3 Precious McKenzie!! Unbelievable man. I remember watching him on Blue Peter when I was 3. Now I am closer to 83, so how the heck old must he be. But he looks great.

apparently 'Precious' is in his mid 80's now ... if UK Athletics have any sense, they will at the very least bring Ms. Campbell along to an event and invite her to 'shot put' just for the fun of it ...

Excellent news on the overall medals front - the Australian gold lead over England is now only 6, which can be beaten.

It always amazes me how many medals swimming has on offer, but also how frequent it is for people to do multiple events - several athletes had at least five medals! I’m no swimmer and I appreciate the variety needed is less in swimming, but it must also be a lot less taxing than running - that, or athletes are lazy and need to start doing all running events / all throwing events etc at a single meet!

I'm not convinced that it is less taxing as such, although I'm not an elite athlete at either so my opinion probably doesn't count for much. I'm not saying that athletes are unfit but the swimmers do all seem to be absolute jacked!

But the distances that most swimmers do are relatively short and there are several relays. It's akin to someone being good at 100m, 200m and 400m and being on each relay. Maybe add Long Jump into that if you wanted a really crazy program.

It's an interesting one. I suspect, for example, that the percentage of the British population who can swim 1000m without stopping is lower than those who can run or jog the same distance without stopping. However, I do think that someone who has swum 1000m hard will feel less tired 10 minutes later than someone who has run 1000m hard. I say that as someone who sometimes used to swim 1000m on their lunch break.

A couple of factors against running - I think that sprinting puts a more intense strain on hamstrings and other leg muscles than swimming does while on longer distances, runners have to deal with the impact with the track that swimmers don't have.
