yeah with the Commonwealth Games the hosts have a lot of power and influence, these days they have to be practically given away. Allowing British nations and Australia to send bigger teams seems fair (and anyone else who may want to host them). For example if Canada host the 2030 edition, only having a quota of 30-40 as they had this time would seem ridiculous.

A very strong team.
Possibly some of those missing out might get a late call up if those selected feel too tired after Eugene?Comment

So much of this team seems plain wrong to me that I simply can't fathom how they have arrived at the decisions they have come to. Three in the Pole Vault both men and women, Three in the mens hammer, three in the womens shot put, three in the womens High Jump. Jodie Williams selected for the 400M (how has she proven her fitness exactly which I believe is one of the key selection criteria). If I was Kyle Langford I would be very miffed with this team selection and I don't think he is the only one.Comment

Looking at some of the reaction it has to be said 'Team England' hasn't really got across why they haven't been able to name a bigger team. I've seen criticism for: not naming youngsters, not having a 400m men's relay team, no javelin throwers, no men's long jump, only one female hammer thrower, not a full selection for the middle distance events, no second male decathlete.
I wonder if quotas will become a bigger thing in future championships, another thread mentioned quotas for Europeans in Munich.Comment

The 3 hammer throwers are ranked 3, 4 and 7.
For the women's shot, they are 4, 7, 12 (with Sophie McKinna being the 12, if she gets back anything close to her best, she would be top 4).
Women's PV is 4= for Holly and Molly and 6 for Cook. Men's PV is 2, 3 and 5.
HJ is 4, 7 and 9.
I grant you J. Williams is unproven form wise, but if she were able to get down to even 50.5 she would be top 5.
Langford definitely seems unlucky, but possibly the decision was made before that run. It would have been hard to justify him before that, given he hadn't broken 1:46 since 2020. Even with it, he's ranked 6.
I mean, don't get me wrong there's valid criticisms of the timing of when the team was decided, and the quotas placed on teams - although it is fair to point out that athletics generally tends to get bigger quotas than many other sports - but most of the selections can be justified on those rankings. The field events especially at the Commonwealths are just so much weaker than they are at the Worlds or even the Euros.
This seems to be a team intended to maximise medal chances. Pretty hard nosed selection. Not what I would necessarily have done but I can understand it from a dispassionate point of view.Last edited by marra; 23-06-22, 11:58.Comment

The whole business of 4 separate countries to represent the UK is a load of baloney, bit like the self important football associations representing the home countries. Meet some of officials , self important nobodies, who will be prancing round Birmingham in 6 weeks time. However we always have Netball.😁😁Comment

Clearly what they have done is follow their own guidelines about prioritising medals, rather than treating it as a consolation prize for those who don't make the WCs.
I do wonder if everyone selected will actually show up though.👍 1Comment

There are bound to be drop outs. According to the selection document they were going to pick reserves too and prioritise those as well. i.e. a Pole Vaulter drops out, they could be replaced by a 800m runner.
There are a few down to double in the 5k/10K but I wonder if that might change following this weekend. -
Yes, we know Jamie Webb is one reserve.
