UK Outdoors June 2022

It's a new month, and things start to really ramp up as the outdoor season gets into full gear, with athletes on these shores and abroad competing for places at three major championships.

As always, here is the place to post relevant UK athlete specific results in.

Out in Finland at the Tamperen Games, Tampere, Jess Tappin continues her good form with an easy win over the 400m hurdles, in 56.17, nearly a second ahead of the next finisher.

Chris Bennett finished 6th in the men's hammer contest, with a best throw of 69.18m, behind the Finnish winner, Aaron Kangas' 72.97m winning effort.

U23 Owen Heard (will turn 21 this year) has PV’d 5.36. He hadn’t got over 5 m before this year.

Even more intriguing, although he’s never done a full decathlon, he has quite a bit of multis pedigree.

Yeah, I saw Ian Hodge's Twitter post about this guy yesterday.

However, judging by a couple of the replies to that comment, it seems that Heard is now fully focusing on the pole vault now. He hasn't thrown a javelin since 2019 for instance, and he'd never exceeded 7m in LJ, leapt over 1.80m in the HJ, nor thrown the shot put over 10m. So I think it was likely that he's going to specialise in the event he showed most talent at, the pole vault.

Plus, he's now been coached by Kate Rooney (nee Dennison), former UK women's pole vault record holder, so I think we know where his career is headed now.

Ben Williams achieves the England CWG qualifying standard with a 16.82m (+1.0m/s) SB in Bedford earlier today. He backed that up with a 16.49m during the competition. He's now just 13cm short of the European Championship standard, though the WC one looks tough to achieve (17.15m). It's good to see him progressing again though.

Decent season opener for Lavai Nielsen over in Montreuil, drawn in lane 8, she managed a 2nd placed finish with a strong final 70m as she recorded a time of 52.72, behind Cuban Olympic finalist Roxana Gomez's 51.72

Andrew Pozzi comes 2nd in the 110m hurdles in Montreuil, clocking 13.46 (+1.5m/s), behind Brazilian Gabriel Constantino's 13.41.

2.27 Pb today for Joel Clarke Khan.

Great there from Clarke Khan, that's the England CWG standard achieved, and the European Championship standard is within reach too, just 3cm shy of it.

Encouraging progress for sure, but 2.30 still feels like a significant barrier.

Inspiration for Emerson ahead of her heptathlon this weekend. JCK had a similar knee injury to his take off leg that Emerson suffered. He's now jumping pb's. Chuffed to bits for him.

Nice 10s PB for Eloise Walker in the 5000 at Montreuil, improving to 15:31.26. She just turned 21 a few days ago. Unless I'm confusing her with someone else, I think she's part of Laura & Jemma's training group.

Erin Wallace, also in that group, is out for the season with a fractured foot.

In the Austrian Open athletics meeting, Jack Lawrie recorded his first PB in the 400m hurdles in 5 years, as he came 2nd in 50.07. Sub-50 seconds can't be too far away for the former EU20 and EU23 finalist.

Oh and something that I've only just realised, Lawrie's run was also a Scottish national record, eclipsing the 50.24 time set by Charles Robertson-Adams set back in 2001.

Adele Tracey wins the 800m in Bydgoszcz: Ellie Baker third. Over 2:01 though.

Chris McCallister 50.07 SB in the 400h. Tough event to make an impression at the moment!

Chris McAlister came 4th in the 400m hurdles in Bydgoszcz, running a season's best of 50.07, but well behind American Khalifah Rosser who won in a meeting record 48.23.
