I cannot recall when HS ran 2 successive races at top speed.

Cindy Sember continues to show admirable consistency in the 100m hurdles, running 12.73 (-0.4m/s) for 3rd place, finishing ahead of World Indoor champion Samber-Mayela in the process, though quite a way behind Toby Amusan's Area record victory.

Ian Hodge reports Kyle Langford ran a pb 1.44.62 (and WC standard) in Germany. And Neil Gourley also gets the standard with a massive pb of 1.44.82.

Where the *heck* did that performance come from? Langford has run ok this season, but usually in the 1:46-1:47 range... To knock that huge chunk of time out of your season's best, and ended up crushing his 5 year old PB by a big margin too, is quite remarkable. Great run from Neil Gourley too!

Langford has been running very well in slow races. He won in Bern, finished 2nd in Watford and beat the much praised Ben Pattison (comfortably) at sportcity in the past month. This was the first quick race he has been involved in this summer - The form-lines said he was in shape if you ignored raw times, glad he has proved it now. Big contender at trials.

Goddamn it.

Never a good sign, given his past struggles to stay fit but fingers crossed that it is just being extremely cautious ahead of the trials. He's already run fast this year so risking any kind of injury would be crazy for a DL race given what a packed summer it is.

Especially the Euros for him - right now he's the only European to have broken 45 seconds I think, and he's done it 3 times.

Well done Lizzie Bird and also Chiara Scherrer (SUI) taking 1.4s off Fabienne Schlumpf's NR with 9:20.28.

At that 800 in Pfungstadt (GER) today, there were big PBs behind Langford & Gourley too, suggesting it may have been perfect conditions:

3 Kessler (GER) 1:45.27 (0.84s PB)
4 James Preston (NZL) 1:45.30 (not such a big PB - by 0.07s)
5 Jye Perrot (AUS) 1:45.61 PB (1.32s PB)

Dustin was due to run but was a DNS.

Chuffed for Jye, he has been running well this summer without too much reward - Pushed recent 1.45 man Djoao Lobles very close in slowish race in Espoo, with Joonas Rinne well back in third, and also finished a strong third to Mark English & Kyle in Watford.

Any results for the Northern, Mid and South of England champs? Such a shame in 2022 we still can’t get results on the day or even some social media updates. The ever reliable Ian Hodge described the atmosphere as ‘muted’ at the South champs.

Because no Brit has ever run quicker than 44.4s at an Olympics. EVER. Only Black, Grindley and MHS have ever broken 44.5 at an Olympics and only 6 Brits have beaten 44.5 at all total. So I would say he's in pretty good company there.

Also he's the reigning European champion, which should count for something in terms of performing when it counts. And even if you want to disqualify the Eugene time, he's still run 44.61 and 44.82 this year. Again, nobody else has broken 45 seconds yet (Kevin Borlee at 45.12 is the next best at the moment). That 44.61 time would also still put him as the 4th fastest Commonwealth runner and 11th fastest in the world this year.

I'm all for reasonable expectations and MHS's injury record makes me worry that he won't finish events. But let's not rewrite history here. If you are criticising him for not getting low times when it counts, then NO British 400m runner has ever done so.

For those who can get behind the paywall the Times had a very good feature on MHS yesterday. For example I didn’t realise he’d come close to losing a leg with gangrene in 2012.

All nice stats, as usual Marra .. But I still consider him inconsistent. His Brit record was fine if there were no false start rule. The best in Europe means nowt as far as I am concerned these days. When it counts,its in a few weeks or maybe at the CG. Then we will see.
