Prodigy Phoebe Gill front-ran her way to the inter 800 title. Time below what she has done in more competitive races, but she was a class above her competition here.

Another favourite, Zico Jones in the m 400 was far too ambitious in his first 300 and blew up to finish out of the medals.

I learnt a few years ago that if you watch an athlete's shoulders when they are running quicker than everyone else down the backstraight of a 400 you tend to get a pretty good idea whether they are going to blow up or not. If their shoulders look tense, they are probably too close to flat out and are likely to blow up. Jones' shoulders were very tense.

I don't know why the commentator for the English Schools' Championships livestream is sounding surprised by Luke Birdseye being DNS for the Senior Boys 2000m Steeplechase final... Poor kid has come through two tough races in Jerusalem at the same event in punishing heat during the EU18s just a couple of days ago. There was no way he'd have been ready to line up today.

So far, all the races I've seen in the English Schools livestream have seen big PB's for all the winners, and plenty of the athletes behind them. Good running conditions and good form shown by them all.

Big surprise in the Inter Girls 80m hurdles, Lia Bonsu, winner of the EA Age Group Indoor Championships 60m U17 hurdles in February, and current leader in the rankings for the 80m hurdles outdoors, was beaten into 3rd place by Isabelle Mardle and Paris King. Mardle smashing her PB with 11.14 showing on the trackside clock, and King surely with a massive PB too.

Scarlet Gammell wins the Senior girls 100m hurdles title with a huge PB of 13.92, her first time under 14 seconds and taking over half a second out of her best from before these championships. The WU20 standard is 13.50 and that could be a realistic target for Gammell come the U20 Champs in Bedford next weekend.

And he was pushed all the way to that great time by his rival Noah Hanson, who also utterly demolished his own PB with 12.77. Definitely two hurdlers to keep an eye on in the next few years.

I see via Ian Hodge Jaiden actually ran even faster in the heats yesterday, 12.69.

Away from the English Schools (but a result featuring someone who might have been expected to compete in Manchester), over at the University Of Birmingham Track & Field Festival, U15 Nell Desir, who won the EA Age Group Indoors Champs in February over 60m, has just run a new 100m PB in an open race (with men too) of 11.96.

Manchester is only English Schools. Nell is from Cardiff.

                Brilliant time for her.

Looks like someone is doing something right with the U20s spring hurdles coaching in that county then.

Although Marli and Mia have the same original club (Dacorum) it appears that they have never had the same coach. Marli and Scarlett appear to have shared a coach at some stages of their careers so far. Scarlett has the same coach as the Inter Boys 100h champ Jaiden Dean.

Oh I wasn't implying that they (Marli and Mia) had the same coach, just that in that county at least, hurdles coaching is going well.

(Personally, I think Jessop and McIntosh will be going to the World Juniors... also, considering the weather that is predicted for the English Athletics U20 Championships next week in Bedford - at least 27/29C, if not warmer still - I'm predicting that both of them will improve their current 100m hurdles PBs too)

              • #57
Might be worth reviewing who has the standard for World juniors as of now, before we get distracted by Eugene:

                MEN
100: Jeriel Quainoo and Michael Onilogbo; Emmanuel Duruihoma is pretty close
                200: Quainoo
400: Ed Faulds from indoors but clearly a bit too soon for him to make it back from his injury sadly
800: Ethan Hussey and Sam Reardon
                1500: Hussey
3000: Osian Perrin by a mile, plus Will Barnicoat and Johnny Livingstone
                5000: Perrin and Livingstone
                PV: Lazarus Benjamin
LJ: none yet but Murray Fotheringham and Brad Davies-Pughe are close
Shot: none, but Isaac Delaney is just 3 cm short
Discus: none, but Rhys Allen is 11 cm short
Hammer: none, but Owen Merrett is 22 cm short - from back in May though
Javelin: Ben East by some way, and Michael Allison
                Dec: Sammy Ball

                WOMEN
100: Nia Wedderburn-Goodison, Joy Eze, Alyson Bell
                200: Success Eduan, Sophie Walton
                400: Yemi Mary John
                800: Abigail Ives, Iris Downes
                100h: Marli Jessop, Mia McIntosh
400h: None yet, but Ophelia Pye got close in Jerusalem
                PV: Sophie Ashurst, just
LJ: Ella Rush from indoors; Molly Palmer is just 2 cm short
                Shot: Cleo Agyepong
                Discus: Zara Obamakinwa
Hep: Abigail Pawlett (by 300 points), Ella Rush, Eloise Hind

The weather looks likely to be great for the England u20 champs at the weekend, so we could see some improvements.

While we were busy following the barnstorming exploits of GB & NI in the European U18's last week, there were some significant results from British athletes in the U20 age group that were understandably missed in all the excitement of the action in Jerusalem.

On the 5th of July, at roughly the same time Mia McIntosh was winning the 100m hurdles gold, Samuel Reardon, who has run so well for the GB U20 and senior 4x400m relay teams last year and this year, set a new 800m PB of 1:47.38. Not only an over 7/10ths of a second improvement from the 18 year old, but is also well below the UK Athletics WU20 qualifying time of 1:48.00. (Reardon is also not far off the WU20 Q time for the 400m (46.50) after his 46.69 PB in June).

And just a couple of days ago, 19 year old Ethan Hussey (who has a 1:46.78 PB to his name from last year), the BMC Gold Standard race in Trafford, running his 2nd fastest time ever with 1:47.27 to head the UK U20 rankings in 2022, and also be under the WU20 time standard.

During the English Schools last weekend, folks were righty lauding Sam Lunt's incredible record breaking run in the Inter Boys (U17) 400m hurdles, but also impressing in the senior boys (U20) equivalent was Jake Minshull, who ran an absolute blinder to defeat UK U20 no.1 Onyeka Okoh in a massive PB of 51.73, just shy of the 51.30 WU20 Q standard.

In the Senior Boys 110m hurdles heats, Harry Barton, who turns 19 in October, ran under 14 seconds for the first time with a 13.84 (-0.4m/s), before backing that up with a 14.10 (0.9m/s) in the final for 2nd place, his 3rd fastest time ever and moves him within striking distance of the WU20 standard of 13.60 set by UKA.

16 year old Luke Ball (turns 17 in Oct), won the Senior Boys high jump with a 2.12m PB leap, just 4cm short of the WU20 Q height, while in the Senior Girls, high jump specialist Halle Ferguson equalled her PB with 1.78m to win, while heptathlete Eloise Hind set a new PB of the same height for 2nd place on countback. Both are still short of the 1.84m height they need to if they want to go to Cali for the World U20s.

As Occasional Hope points out in their comment, the weather in Bedford will be set for some qualifying standard performances, (though the 3000m Steeplechase and 5000m Walkers will probably not enjoy the conditions all that much).

I predict that the women's and men's 100m and 200m could see some very good times over the weekend in Bedford.

Well, for starters, that's a pretty decent team selected, though the lack of U20 women's 1500m, 3000m and 5000m runners is a bit of a downer. But all in all, a strong team with a few medal hopefuls among the squad.

The big omission (at least for me) was in the women's heptathlon. Abigail Pawlett set a new PB of 5706 points when winning the England U20 Combined Events Championship in May, which served as the World U20 selection event for multi event athletes. That points total still ranks 6th in the world U20 lists for this year. Yet the two heptathletes who were named on the squad were Ella Rush, who didn't even compete in Bedford due to her NCAA commitments, and Eloise Hind (5491 and 5448 points respectively). Pawlett must have picked up an injury of some kind between now and her last appearance which was in the long jump of the UK Senior Championships in late June.

Yeah, Pawlett must be injured, because there is no other reason to *not* select the 6th best heptathlete in the world right now. It's especially unfortunate for her because the 5706 points she accrued in Bedford in late May was achieved in unseasonably cool and blustery conditions. If the weather we've been having now was around then, Pawlett would likely have added at least another 200-300 more points to her score, taking her into medal contention for the World U20s. She even mentioned how much better she would have done during the post event interview and how she was looking forward to improving further at Cali.

On your point about the lack of U20 1500m, 3000m and 5000m women heading to Colombia, I agree that this will be a temporary blip. The likes of Annie Mann (Gold, 1500m), Jessica Bailey (Silver, 3000m) and even Iris Downes (Bronze, 800m) who all won medals in the Euro U18s earlier this month, have shown plenty of scope for continuing their impressive form into next year's European U20s. (Heck, Phoebe Gill, who was too young to compete in Jerusalem, not only had the fastest U18 time for 800m this year, but also one of the fastest over 1500m too, albeit during a mixed race. She'll be still eligible for the *next* U18 Champs in 2 years time, but depending on her trajectory, might qualify for the European U20s in 2023.)

A shame about Abigail. Wasn't she originally picked for some events at Mannheim but didn't compete? The injury must have been around then.

                  Final entries are up.

                  0_E Country (worldathletics.org) by event/SB.

It's going to be a bit of a challenge for our athletes. I hope some of them can make that next step up in class.

Jeriel Quainoo is ranked 3 in the 200, although the very impressive Letsile Tebogo, ranked 5, can probably improve over him given his 100m form. Men's 4x1 is ranked 4.

The best British girls' rankings are Abigail Ives, 6 in the 800, and Success Eduan, 7 in the 200, although both relay teams are ranked 3rd.

Wonder why no Tamari Davis for the US? She's run 10.91 (faster than Tina Clayton) this year.

I assume Tamari Davis didn't compete in the US Under 20s champs.

Germany's male throwers are very strong. Three shot putters over 20m(I thought it was 2 per event) and 2 prodigious athletes in the discus, 69m and 71m. Looking forward to seeing Puripol Boonson go in the sprints, and the Jamaican girls in the sprints and hurdles. Tough for the British athletes, but as ever, Mia McIntosh will be worth keeping an eye on.

Definitely a missed opportunity for Tamari Davis and the US. She ran 10.81 and 10.83 in a US meeting yesterday and would have been a massive favourite in the u20s.
