  • World Indoors Day 1

Perhaps better to start a separate thread

Very good runs from Holly and Noor Vidts in the pent followed by two crackers from Moloney and Warner in the men’s equivalent

Ehammer and Scantling also set PBs going.to be a cracking competition.

      Ok, in this new thread....

Simon Ehammer showing why he recently set a new world best for indoor heptathlon in the long jump (8.25m) earlier in the year with an 8.04m opening round effort. Ashley Maloney registered a leap of 7.66m, a season's best.

In the opening heat of the men's 400m, Julien Watrin continues the recent tradition of strong 400m runners as he smashed his own Belgian indoor national record with 45.88, well ahead of USA's Trevor Bassitt in 46.47.... A huge shame that our own Ed Faulds isn't here btw, because judging by the speed of this indoor track, he could have gone sub 46 seconds quite easily.

Watrin looked superb but you have to say the 400 looks quite flat generally. Warner gets an 8m jump in after a foul

Holly Mills ran the gauntlet at her opening height in the pentathlon high jump, needing all 3 attempts to clear 1.71m.

1.72i is her SB so any more heights from this are all upside

              And a 1.74 clearance!

Why doesn't Klaver vary her race tactics rather than her usual headless chicken approach.

I have read elsewhere that her and her coach have experimented with going out slower and her second 200 is barely any quicker than when she goes out fast.

Lieke Klaver really does only have one way to run, doesn't she...!

Miller-Uibo vs Bol in the final is going to be a cracker.

Massive disappointment for Giles, he is DNS in the heats of the 800m

Apparently Giles tweaked something in the warm up area and had to withdraw as a result.... and yet again, a major championship comes and goes with Giles not making his mark, this time, his body failing him at the crucial moment.

GB came into this world indoors with 3 entrants to the men's 800m.... all three exited in the heats. Yikes.

It is seriously disappointing that a nation that had so many under 1:45 outdoors last year didn't manage anyone in the final, no matter the reason. Hopefully the outdoor champs are a lot more successful...

So, those predictions of medals for Britain we made last week seem to be looking rather silly now.... KJT looking undercooked in the pentathlon, Giles DNS in the 800m, Neita through well, but will have to be superb just to reach the final... and I can't think of any other serious British contenders for medals in Belgrade.

Yup - KJT could still win the Hep with her LJ but doesn't look likely. Giles is the big disappointment. He was legitimately one of the favourites, deeply disappointing for him and the team.

Just like the OG 800m. No Brits in the final. . perhaps when the outdoor season proceeds and a few of our guys run sub 1.45 we dont get too excited re the WC.

It was completely reasonable to be excited about Giles. If an athlete from another nation had won 7/9 races indoors, beaten everyone else in the World and was #2 on the World Indoor all-time list they would be treated as one of the favourites.

I'd also add Mysterybrick that it wasn't reasonable to expect different results/performances from either Learmonth or Grice. They ran about as well
                  as I expected.

Giles was the only one expected to make the final

When a guy runs so many indoor races in a short space of time there is and always will be the thought too good when it doesn't count.

Just like when someone hasn't done any races you can say they will be undercooked...

It is very easy to provide reasoning post-hoc. Given you predicted a medal for Giles in the prediction contest, it appears this is exactly what you are doing...
