Really gutsy 800 by 17 yo Ella Rush to win the pentathlon with a championship record 4365. Only Morgan Lake and KJT have ever scored more as u20s in the UK.

Incidentally, it's her first pentathlon since 2020, and only her second ever with senior implements.

3rd best ever by a Junior behind KJT and Morgan Lake. And she'll still be a Junior next year.

Rather significant that the indoor college winners cannot represent USA in Belgrade. No Champion Allinson in 400m after his 45.04. And not forgetting the two sub 51 women in the 400m. Amber Anning was 6th in sub 52.

Didn't see that coming with 100m to go!

        Well done, Jenny Selman.

Jemma Reekie doesn't look sharp though. Maybe still suffering a bit after food poisoning (I didn't know that last week).

Potentially another addition to Great Britain's production line of female multi-eventers.....

Ella Rush has improved her shot PB. Niamh Emerson hasn't competed yet.

Both are products of the smallish Derbyshire club, Amber Valley.

What a great performance. Ella Rush has accepted a place at Georgia so will be competing on the US circuit from this Autumn.

LoveSprints1 Good luck to Ella Rush in Georgia when she gets there.

Also, she'll be factor at the World U20's heptathlon this summer, going up against European U20 champion Sara Vanninen of Finland and 2021 world rank #2 Henriette Jaeger of Norway (if fit) being the top contenders having been the only U20's to break the 6000 point barrier in the world last year.

What are we predicting Keely could do outdoors? I'll say somewhere between 50.8-51.2, and I'd definitely give her a shot leading off the English 4x4 at commies.
I will be even more chuffed if she manages to clear the hurdles in her 400m hurdles!!

Giant performance from Sophie McKinna. She goes second all time indoors, right?

And I think that was an outright PB by Yemi Mary John. Not many are quicker over 400 indoors than out! LOL

Correct again Paul. Yemi Mary John edged a little closer to Amber Anning's UK U20 indoor record of 53.00 with her 53.05 performance today. It wouldn't surprise me to see Yemi in the 4x400m relay squad at the Commonwealth's... if not also as an individual athlete.

Bear in mind the Commonwealth's clash with World Juniors.

Ladyloz Ahh, true.... Hmm, well if she carries on this type of form, Yemi would likely be a finalist at the World U20s at least.

Correct - McKinna leap frogs ahead of Judy Oakes' 18.74m performance recorded in Ghent all the way back in 1988 (when I was just 8 years old!)

The women's 800m was a good race, but I can't shake the feeling that there was something missing. I certain something that would have turned it into a really great and exciting race.

Yes, no Keely! But, we knew she was running the 400m. No, there was something else. Some missing element. I can't quite put my finger on it. Anyway, whatever it was, I'm sure, as I said, it prevented a good race from being a really exciting, very good race.

On that logic, you knew IB wasn’t running as well, so maybe that weird feeling is just something you ate? 🤷‍♂️

The Men's 100m final in Daegu 2011 probably would have been a more exciting race with Mr Bolt in it. But, the officials applied some rule or other to prevent him racing.

Athletics, however, did survive that disaster. Phew! Relief all round!

            • I’m ambivalent about Hodgkinson competing in the relay, long-term I think she can add something to any quartet we put out but this year of all years might be one to miss with 3 races in Eugene followed by potentially another 3 in Birmingham less than two weeks later. It’s going extremely well for her at the moment, so why tempt fate and run the risk of getting injured? The relay in Eugene is a non starter as the 800 and 4x4 are on the same evening (which would also rule out any double for Mu)

That was a rather unfortunate men’s 400 which didn’t do anyone any favours, yesterday was the best I’ve seen Somers run since, well, 2014. I thought he had a chance of getting the qualifying time today. AHW DQed at the Olympic trials too, the talent is clearly there

Ms. Hodgkinson is clearly a massive talent, but I for one hope she doesnt overt exert herself, focus on the 800, maybe have fun for an England quartet at CGs, meanwhile, I hope it spurs 4 or 5 other 'specialist' ladies to run consistent sub 51 and join Jodie Williams in a very strong 4x4, then in the nicest possible way, The Hodge wont be needed for the bigger events.

I suspect she is more interested in the Commonwealth relay anyway. Probably only 2 rounds of 800m there.

I remember a couple of occasions when an indoor 400m trial was rather inconclusive or messy and a domestic 400 race was added to the indoor Grand Prix the next week which sorted things out. Of course, that isn't an option this year.

            • Champs was exciting! 400s as always the best event clearly lol

Add Amber, and when was the last time we had 6 athletes with a world Q time??

Unfortunate for Alex and for Tom, but Ben gets the Title and not bad set up for the hurdles outdoor, he has come on strong this winter and we target a mid 45 outdoor flat and as far as possible under 50 of course for the hurdles.
Both Amy and Ellis also ran indoor PBs so overall I am happy with the weekend

                Excellent running from Ben Higgins.

I think everyone's slightly sleeping on just how good Sam Reardon is, with Ed Faulds stealing the limelight. 1:48.81i then 46.72i within 10 days as an U20 is bonkers talented. He strikes me as the kind of athlete who could be a relay animal (46.07 split last year when his PB was 47.48).

MysteryBrick You know who Reardon reminds me of? Ben Pattison from about 5 years ago.

In 2018, Pattison came 4th in the 400m at the European U18s as a 16 year old. A year later, having followed the incredible Max Burgin home in a then PB of 1:46.71 in that record breaking U20 800m race in Bedford, he'd do the same at the European U20s as part of the unprecedented 1-2-3 GB had in the 800m final. And last year, Pattison went sub 1:46 for the first time, though was probably disappointed to come only 4th in the European U23s over the longer distance.

If Reardon maintains a similar route to progression, he'd be doing very well, and he's already a faster 400m runner than Pattison was at the same age.

Yes, very similar RunUnlimited. Pattinson is progressing excellently, and is just overshadowed by the embarrassment of 800m riches.

            • Jemma Reekie struggled to break 56 seconds outdoors at altitude for 400m last month. The last thing she needed was an indoor season. She looks knackered and is probably mentally fatigued. Give the girl a rest.

              • Agree strongly. Why some of our track talent, few enough anyway, feel the need to compete indoors so hard, this year of all years, is a mystery ,and for me foolish and short sighted
Giles is rushing off to Madrid after too much racing already. I believe he will struggle in July and August. I know it's all about money but you have to be serious with WC,CG and Europeans.
Glad to note DAS kept out of it all and Jodie William's.

I agree regarding some athletes, but oddly enough not Giles. I think he has worked out what works for him which is a lot of racing - he came 3rd in a close Olympic semi and then raced 6 800s in August September, all 1:44.9 to 1:45.5. Indoors this year he has been incredibly consistent and is one of the favourites for the World Indoors. I think he'll be fine.

Reekie looks knackered and needs a rest. Wightman was the same.
