After Sacha Zhoya's 12.72 world record over the 3'3" junior hurdles last year, today he made his highly anticipated debut over the senior 3'6" hurdles, running 14.13.

I have not seen any reference here to a complete surprise in Jamaica or did i not read enough. Oblique Seville ran at the meet in Jamaica the other day a legal 9.86, with 0.20 favourable wind ,way ahead of his opponents. The same meet that ETH ran a 100/200 double despite her inability to come to Birmingham due to 'discomfort'. Seville's performance will require further confirmation, over the next few weeks, but a lot more of interest to me than the awful state of our sprinting, with the Caribbean contingent pretty rubbish and Prescod needing no comment . Gemili is yesterdays man, for me.

As for the DL in Birmingham, good to see some excellent field event performances, which we all saw.LM ran her usual positive race; DAS its too early, imo, to say too much.Reekie not fully recovered at all and we will have to wait for much later.KH ran well but a much tougher task awaits next w/e with MU.
The performance of our middle distance athletes may well fall short of last years over hyped stuff, but i suppose we must wait a while. Dustin, Burgin and others dont convince me of anything for this year, at least.
Our number one 1500m man Kerr is not at last years standard, currently, but late June will tell us more of his chances in Eugene ,especially in our Trials.
Anybody know why our top Discus thrower was not present. Injury??
Five weeks to go to our national Trials, but I note that our qualifying Entry Standard numbers, currently, but from before this weekend though, from P of 10 data, shows our male athlete numbers are 8 in track, 2 Marathon and no field event qualifiers. Our female athlete figures are 10 track, 5 Marathon and 2 in the field events.Thank goodness for Qualified by Rankings opportunities.
I wonder if the existence of 3 opportunities for national representations will cause some of our athletes to give up on trying to be ready for Eugene.

Qualification is from 28 June 2021, so quite a few have a standard already - they may not be so desperate to race around finding quality weather etc, as they need to focus on securing a place at the Trials.
That said, I do think we’ll see some athletes who have a chance of medalling at the Euros or CWG but would struggle at the WCs consider not going, if not funded - as exposure and therefore sponsorship will be more likely from finishing high at a home games.

Gemili certainly hasn’t performed at his best so far this year, but it is very early in the seAson so I won’t write him off just yet.

On the final day of the Ibero-American Championships in Alicante ...
Cuba completed a double in the Triple Jumps - Leyanis Perez winning with a 14.58 PB from Povea, 14.41, to go with Lazaro Martinez's 17.30 victory (I forgot to mention that yesterday).
Alexander Ogando (DOM) won the 200 in 20.27 into a 2.1m/s headwind. On the Women's side Vitoria Cristina Rosa (BRA) completed the double with a less impressive 23.54 (-2.5) after she won Friday's 100 in 11.12.
Venezuela won 2 medals today. Joselyn Brea (based in Spain) won the 5000 - no surprise really since she's a 15:21 athlete. However, Argentina's Fedra Luna taking the Silver ahead of Lucia Rodriguez (ESP) definitely was a surprise. A good reward for pushing the pace in the last 1000 after the race had dawdled. 18yo Carla Dominguez (ESP) didn't have the necessary speed on the last lap and finished a few steps back in 4th.
In the Men's 800 Ryan Sanchez (PUR) did his usual go out fast and then die in the last 150m "thing", leaving the way open for Alvaro de Arriba to win in 1:45.20. Venezuela's Jose Maita took a whopping 2.65s off his PB to win Silver in 1:46.22!
In the morning's Half Marathons in Torrevieja, Cristian Vasconez (ECU) crossed the line first but was DQ'd for cutting a corner (I think this was on a section where the road was divided by cones because it was an out & back course). This handed the Gold to Peru's Luis Ostos. Florencia Borelli (ARG) won the Women's race. She'll be Eugene-bound in the Marathon having run sub-2:27 in Sevilla recently.
A couple of world champions won Gold today - Yaime Perez with 62.06 and Darlan Romani, 21.70. In 5th place in the Shot, Argentine Juan Carballo breached 20m for the first time with 20.04.
In the Men's 5000 there was the expected 1-2, Carlos Mayo from the good Chilean Carlos Diaz.
In the Men's Javelin both Brazilians threw over 80m for the first time, Silver medalist Pedro Nunes Rodrigues breaking his PB by a full 5 metres! 21yo Leandro Ramos (POR) won with 81.37 - he threw a 84.78 NR in the recent Doha DL. Has anyone seen him throw? After releasing the javelin he does a front flip and lands on his feet!
17 of the 22 competing countries won a medal.
There's loads of similar events this year, i.e., regional championships or championships based on shared language or history. Amongst them, the Mediterranean Games in the first week of July and, of course, the Comm Games. There's also several continental championships/Games happening, such as the African Championships in a couple of weeks, and much later in the year the South American Games and NACAC Championships.

Sasha Zhoya was a DNS in the 110H final at yesterday's Castiglione meeting, CAML referring earlier to his heat run.
However, Andy Diaz (CUB) very much showed up, Triple Jumping a 17.64 WL.
Omanyala won the 100 in 10.11 (+0.2) and 200 in 20.50 (-0.3).
19yo Addisu Yihune (ETH) won the 5000 by 6+ seconds in 13:02.10. Another good advert for the World XC Tour - this season he won Campaccio and was 2nd in Elgoibar.
The Women's 1500 was good with 5 women running under 4:05.6, including 2 Italians. Netsanet Desta (ETH; 1:59.39 800 PB from 2021) won in 4:04.65 - according to WA it was her first ever outdoor 1500. In 2nd place Elena Bello (2:00.4 PB at 800) took 4.3s off her PB from last month, running 4:05.09 here. And in 5th Federica del Buono ran the 2nd fastest time of her career, 4:05.58. Her 4:05.32 PB dates back to 2014!
Geraschchenko won the HJ at 1.90 with Borthwick & Lake both disappointing - 1.80 & 1.85 respectively.
In the W PV Lene Retzius won & improved her Norwegian record to 4.52.
Reynold Banigo won the LJ with 7.94 (+0.4).

What a busy day on the Continental Tour with 4 meetings in Europe! Here's the main results from 3 of the meetings (I haven't watched the jumps meeting in Kallithea yet so don't know the results.)
Huelva (ESP) - Bronze
In the W 400 Paulino's compatriot Fiordaliza Cofil ran a 50.38 PB - she won the Ibero-American Championships a few days ago in a 50.64 PB. In 2nd was Lithuania's Modesta Juste Morauskaite in 50.49 - a European lead, NR and a massive outright PB by 1.14s (she ran 51.63 indoors this year).
There were also big PBs in both the Men's and Women's Steeples with possible relevance to the sharp end at the European Championships ... ...
Victor Ruiz (ESP) ran 8:16.42 for a Eugene standard and smashing his PB by 9+ seconds. He's no youngster either, at 28yo. Mehdi Belhadj (FRA) won in 8:16.39.
In the Women's Steeple Alice Finot (FRA) overhauled Aimee Pratt with 100m to go and ran 9:21.41, way inside the 9:30 Eugene standard, a 24s PB (!!) and a new French NR, taking 4s off Sophie Duarte's record from 2009. It's not totally out of the blue though - she ran 8:46 on the flat indoors last year. However, she's 31 and seems to have come to the sport late - WA has her first result in 2016. She ran two 1500s that year and ended the year with a 4:44.9 PB in the 1500!
Romania's Claudia Prisecaru (24) ran 9:33.41, a 13s PB.
In the 5000 18yo Levy Kibet (another World XC Tour standout) ran a 13:03.09 PB. In 4th Ouassim Oumaiz (ESP) ran a big 13:06.74 PB and WCh standard.
A NR for the Spanish women in the 4x100 with 43.30 and that was without their top sprinter, Maria Isabel Perez.
Dessau (GER) - Bronze
No fireworks from Mihambo this year - at this meeting last year she jumped 7.05. Just 6.49 this time.
Vetter was a DNS, leaving the way for Weber to win with 85.02 ahead of Walcott & Vladlejch.
Ferdinand Omanyala was beaten by Yupun Abeykoon Mudiyanselage who improved his Sri Lankan NR from 10.15 to 10.06 (-0.2).
In the W 400 Kaczmarek comfortably got the better of Swiety-Ersetic, running 51.23.
The M 800 was won by Tony van Diepen in 1:45.30 from Michal Rozmys, 1:45.39. Jamie Webb 5th in 1:46.28. Thomas Randolph did "a Dustin", i.e., going backwards at an alarming rate on the back straight, but he dropped out with 200 to go to save himself the ignominy of a 1:51 clocking.
Lahti (FIN) - Challenger
My anticipated Korte-Neziri-Hurske battle in the 100H didn't happen, this time Neziri not competing (after she ran in the heats). Hurske won the final in 12.92 from Jamaican youngster Crystal Morrison with a 12.93 PB. Korte 3rd in 13.10.
High jumper Heta Tuuri improved her 2019 PB by 2cm to 1.90.
Bianca Williams won in 11.35 (+2.1)
Topi Raitinen won the 3000 in 7:53.61 from Alex George, 7:54.94.
