Some international news from the multi events meeting in Ratigen, Germany where already in the opening day of the decathlon content there has been a remarkable personal performance by former European U20 champion, World Indoor silver medallist and rising Swiss star, Simon Ehammer.

In a field that contains reigning World Decathlon champ Niklas Kaul and a whole host of other German decathletes, Ehammer made a fast start and holds the early lead. He was fastest overall in the 100m, winning the 2nd heat in 10.65 (-0.5 m/s), his 3rd fastest ever and scoring 940 points.

However, in the long jump was when the fireworks really went off in the competition. Ehammer is the reigning European U23 champion in the long jump and today in Ratigen, he set a new outright PB of 8.30m (+1.5m/s), improving upon the 8.26m he jumped indoors in January. It meant that he won the 2nd discipline by 95cm (!) and scored a colossal 1138 points! On any other day, Malik Diakate's 7.35m (+0.9m/s) PB, worth 898 points and a near 20cm improvement on his previous best, would have been considered a very decent effort... but in the face of Ehammer's sheer dominance, it kinda paled into insignificance a little!
Niklas Kaul meanwhile with a best effort of just 7.03m and 821 points, well down on his 7.36m PB from the Tokyo Olympics, was well over a meter in arrears.

Ehammer's excellent opening day continued with 2nd PB coming in the shot put, 14.68m, and though he wasn't the best shot putter in the contest (Nico Beckers,16.63m), it was enough to limit an damage to his substantial early lead.
Kaul's struggles continued however as the normally reliable shot putter could only get a best effort of 13.73m registered and he fell further behind Ehammer.

I was thinking that the jump had to have been close to a best in a decathlon. Hopefully Ehammer gets through all the events with no mishaps.

This year the WC Decathlon should be a great contest ; Warner, the top Americans together with the Aussie Champion and possibly Ehammer etc

The improving American heptathlete Anna Hall won their trials with a WC qualifying score, finishing up with a 2.03.11 800.

Emily Sisson broke Sara Hall's US Record in the Half Marathon by 4 seconds with 67:11. At 20km she was 8 seconds off where she needed to be for even pace but she pulled it back in the final 1.1km.

8867 from Scantling to win the US championships to climb up to 7th on the all-time list. Warner is going to have to be on top form at the world championships if he wants to beat him. Garland racks a very impressive 8720, his PB a few months ago was 8196 and must now be considered a contender for a medal in Eugene

Anna Hall finished the heptathlon with an 2:03 800, which could make the final heat very interesting at the WCs

Anna set PBs in the 200m (23.14), 100m hurdles (13.21) and the long jump 6.39, but underperformed in the javelin, shot put and high jump... If she nails all of her events, then I think she could be a problem on the world stage and she is only 21... But even with her impressive 800m speed, I'm not sure she has quite enough to seriously challenge a fully fit Thiam or KJT.

She jumped 6.74 with a big following wind recently too. And only 21 - she has massive potential.

The big question this year is, is KJT going to be fit? She looked less than impressive indoors.

Returning to the action in Ratigen, Simon Ehammer after the 8 events now leads by a massive 497 points Germany's Tim Nowak, after another great day so far.

A 13.75 SB in the 110m hurdles got him off to a good start, as he increased his overnight lead, which was followed by his weakest event, the discus. Though his points lead was cut into somewhat, Ehammer was able to limit some of the damage with a PB throw of 39.13, a nearly 3 meter improvement. In the pole vault, the 22 year old Swiss managed a SB of 5.00m for the joint best performance, along with Nowak and Swede Marcus Nilsson.

So, with just the javelin and 1500m left, Ehammer is poised for not only the win but potentially a big decathlon points best too. He currently stands on 7147 points.

And with a 53.01m javelin and a 4:57.55 amble around the track in the 1500m, Ehammer takes the title in Ratigen with a new Swiss NR of 8354 points, ending up 196 points ahead of Tim Nowak who scored 8160, the first time he's gone beyond the 8000 point milestone since 2019.
