  • Some notable results from the BUCS meeting last night from Ian Hodge's Twitter page...

Marli Jessop, silver medallist at the English Athletics U20/U17/U15 Indoor championships last week, has further lowered her 60m hurdles PB to 8.28, moving her up to 6th on the UK U20 all time list. Meanwhile, multi eventer Jodie Smith hacked over 2/10ths off her previous indoor 60m hurdles best, improving from 8.56 down to 8.33. That maintains her perfect record of setting hurdles PBs so far this indoor season, where the 20 year old started 2022 with a best of 8.79.

    • Nice 60m pb for Charlie Dobson. Was he injured last year? He only ran one race, in April, which was a pb at 400.

      • Charlie Dobson wins his heat of the 60m in Birmingham, setting a new PB of 6.62.

        • Dobson is a super talent, 6.62 and 45.5 is something not many people are able to do. Questions are:
          • Will he go quicker in the final?
          • Will he avoid injury this year?
          • What distance will he focus on?

I've checked and none of the Brits who have run 6.62 or quicker at 60 have run a 400 that fast.

        • Fantastic run for Isabelle Boffey and quite a few scalps. Pity it's at a non-standard distance.

What is impressive for me is that I tend to think of her as a 400/800 type so to win a 1000m is very promising.

trickstat Not just that, but doing so by working through the field with a big burst on the back straight and last bend too. Very impressive from Boffey.

Jemma Reekie looked like she faded badly.

        • I have never been overly impressed with Borthwick ,sadly inconsistent and her last 2 outings have been very poor. indifferent

          • 46.16 junior British indoor record for Ed Faulds, really mixing it with the senior internationals there. Well done.

            • Ed Faulds smashes the British U20 indoor 400m record, as he tumbles over the finish line in 3rd place and a time of 46.16, slashing over 5/10ths off his previous best and nearly 4/10ths off Mark Hylton's 27 year old record.

(BTW, Faulds time also breaks the European U20 indoor 400m record held by Thomas Schonlebe that's stood since 1984, 46.39)

I suspect a good pole vault coach who watches him a few times would be able to see why. Trouble is it often tends to take a really good coach to sort that out.

Disappointment for Borthwick though, going out at 1.88m, well below her best.

                    • Great win from Thompson-Herah in the 60m, coming back from behind to overhaul Kambundgi, while Neita came through for 3rd. (Neita with another indoor PB of 7.13)

Can Dobson stay fit for an entire season for the first time since winning the U20 200m silver medal back in 2018? I sure hope so, because he's looking like one heck of a prospect. Sub 6.60 over 60m, a 20.5 200m (outdoors, due for revision), and a 45.5 400m outdoors (plus a pair of windy 10.1 100m times from 2020) is a pretty impressive spread of times for someone who is still just 23 years old.

(In fact, as trickstat points out above, nobody else from these shores who have run 60m faster than 6.62, have ever run faster than his 45.51 over 400m... he is a talented lad for sure.)

He's also done those times so far without racing at the kind of overseas venues where many of our sprinters have run their best times. He hasn't actually run a 200 since the 2019 British Trials.
