The modern use of the word by some to mean "Alert to injustice in society, especially racism" has become politicised and harnessed to justify all sorts of actions and bids for power for which there is no consensus in the UK. One group's interests have been pitted against another group or the rest of us supposedly in the cause of social justice. Some of it is frankly madness. Examples of that would include the Labour Party apparently now intimidated out of saying the word woman, actors accused of misappropriation when playing almost anyone but themselves, eminent scientists in New Zealand currently under attack by their own scientific community for respectfully defending science, because their words might upset Maori's...... I could go on as there is a long list of madness resulting from woke ideology. To top it all some prominent areas of woke activism are of themselves deeply racist or unjust.
It is noticeable that the Woke often demand people use words in the way they decide and seek to silence those who disagree or offend them. Sorry I will use the word woke anyway I choose.
As for safeguarding (the subject of this thread), safe spaces and many other aspects of safety are becoming detached from reality. Beyond the point which is practical, enforceable or desirable.
