Well done her for giving it everything and putting herself in a good position before the injury - which thankfully isn't an achilles ! I'll say it now : three years time she will win in Paris.

Bird a NR - can't ask more. Jodie into the final and a great PB : anything more now is a bonus. Miller a very creditable sixth. And Muir safely into her final.

So actually a rather good day ...

Decathlon interesting. Warner out in front but Moloney doing a great job in second ...Aussies having a good athletics games if not yet hitting the medals : might be one in this ?

De Grasse got an excellent gold ... delighted for him. The Yanks were thereabouts but not the result they were expecting.

Nearly forgot Pozzi getting into the final too - was too swept up in excitement over that wonderful 400h final.

All in all a very enjoyable day . More please ...
alfie, will Muir medal in the 1500m in your view.??

Jessica Hull & Nozomi Tanaka with sub-4 National Records ! 3:58.81 and 3:59.19 respectively. Tanaka has taken 4.9s off her own NR at these Games!

Purrier only 6th in 4:01.00 but could go through.
i rather suspect that some of those fabulous times will not be repeated in the final and some of the women def ran their Final today
. Nice to see after so much fearful negativity. Soon be back to the DL and who knows what we may see.

At least 2 billion people in countries do not take football seriously; so i do not agree about Football.
India, Indonesia, China really ?? Pakistan and many poor African countries dont bother too much with footy.

If Paulino is at her best I think a medal for sure; SMU is a mystery and we cannot tell if she is at her best.Could we see a British top 6 ?

It seems quite open which makes it doubly annoying we didn't get anyone through.....
well, Rowden ran with no acumen and Giles wanted to do the rabbit thing. Thats why they are not there.
Of course Murphy ran even more stupidly in the final

            • I was very impressed by Jodie Williams post race interview, she is going into that final with the mentality that she can win a medal. Realistically it will be a tall order but she has done incredibly well considering this is her first time running the 400 at a global championships. Paulinho was impressive, there is a chance Uibo could leave this championships with out a gold from her two events

Thoroughly enjoyable hammer throw final, even if Fajdek had performed to his best he still wouldn’t have beaten Nowicki, that’s how good he was. 80m throw only came 4th, very high standard

i thought that Lyles thought he had it, but his last 50 just a bit off from De Grasse whose confidence is very high.

anyway fab from AdG, but the US men's 4x1 team will be something to be reckoned with
agreed, if they dont screw up . Has been known. Canada may be in the mix.

                  • What time does Kipyegon have in mind for the final? The OR is easily in her grasp. The WR maybe not, after the rounds? Any slower than 3:54 and Muir will come into the equation.

Honestly, I think Kipyegon wins with a fair bit in hand whether they run 3.52 or 4.12. She's just that good imo, massively underappreciated. If Hassan couldn't beat her in a one off diamond league, I don't see how she can with two 5ks and two 1500s in her legs.

                  • Turning to tomorrow, who will be top dog in the 400m; i picked Norman but i think it will not be there. Cherry may be the best American. Gardiner for me .Have a feeling a def medal for Zambrano.

I'd love Kirani James to win, but Gardiner for me too.

                  • I like the AW description of the men's 800 final: Kenyan one-two in disappointing Olympic 800m final - AW (athleticsweekly.com)

That semi-final run was preceded by a quite farcical 400m heat in the morning where he exhibited acting not seen since the likes of ITV’s Crossroads in the 1960s as he pretended to accidentally false start so he could focus on the 800m.

I think she has a very good chance. Leaving aside Hassan and Kipyegon she is better than the others and seems to be running well (and hasn't over taxed herself in the heats) However we all know that unless you are hugely superior to the rest of the field a 1500 can be a tricky event to predict . Does anyone take it out hard or will it be slow start and a burn-up ... jostles in the pack : have to be ready to adapt your tactics to the situation ...a lot of variables.

If she gets her tactics right and doesn't suffer any interference I reckon she will. Arguably is due a change of luck in a major outdoor event. Crossed fingers , eh ?

                      • Just going to say, that men's 200 m final featured the 5th, 6th and 8th fastest times ever recorded at an Olympic Games. Only the one and only Usian Bolt (2008 - 19.30, 2012 - 19.32) his Jamaican team mate, Yohan Blake (2012 - 19.44) and Michael Johnson (1996 - 19.32) have run faster. A great race.
