    • Thanks Ocasional. We maybe overlooked another Aussie looking good. He had a fine season in aussie earlier

I think I posted saying be Laura against the Ethiopian or did anyone reckon the canadian? If I didn't I at least thought it...
Not that, given they were 2nd and 3rd in the first semi that's a particularly insightful comment but there we are

There are several comments about it on page 4 of the 12 on this thread!

KJT had been competing all day so plenty to talk about even of much of it now looks pretty redundant.

Yes, the battle for gold is almost certainly going to be, as predicted prior to the competition, Kipyegon versus Hassan, with Laura well in the mix for bronze, but it may be a bit of a fight.

        • I er completely forgot about the men's 200. I've been slightly panicked by the news that every restaurant in Cornwall is apparently booked until September so been frantically researching. Holidays, are not much fun this year eh?
anyway fab from AdG, but the US men's 4x1 team will be something to be reckoned with

          • Talking about relays we have lane 3 (effectively lane 2) tomorrow in the men's, which doesn't augur particularly well.
First 3 we have Jam, SA, and Japan amongst others

In the Rio final he ran 20.12 into a -0.5 when only Bolt went sub 20. Today was also a -0.5 so 6th! He might have been able to snatch 5th if he really was in the PB shape he suggested but I think 4th would have been out of reach and I can’t see him ever running the kind of time that would have got him in the medals.

He would have needed a massive PB to get a medal, or even to match his 4th in Rio.

            • Williams has lane 8 (i.e. really 7) in the final, with Felix on her outside (her old mentor and hero), and SMU just on her inside.
That seems a pretty good draw for Jodie, given that she was not eligible for lane 5.

It will probably take close to a national record to medal. She has been improving her PB by about a second each month recently, LOL. She is going to have to accelerate that rate a bit
in the next two days. Probably won't happen, but I would not put it past her.

She seemed absolutely knackered after it. Mind stewcoach thinks she'll run a British record and he knows far more about 400 running than I ever will.
I don't think she'll be in the medal conversation but another PB would be fab, and if not she's overachieved getting to the final. Mr Coppell aside how many of the men can we say that about....

I'd love to see her PB/NR/medal of course, but I won't feel she has failed in any way if she doesn't.

She's also got a big relay medal chance - I favour GB over Poland now.

            • whats all this talk about the commonwealth games , its after the wrolds next year which is the first event of the summer

But it's a home games, plus in many case easier medal prospects, which means some athletes will prioritise it over the WCs. It's unlikely to be possible to double.

every bloody athlete should be going to all three except perhaps the multi eventers, they should be doing two

great ! now that we have a possible medallist from India in the Jav, we can say track and field is the only worldwide sport in the Olympics. Great and so much more relevant than the stuff on the TV this last ten days, which has included sport/ pastimes from a few countries only.Purely a TV media event.

It is a much more global sport than it used to be, and that is why it is so much harder to win medals.

Really really looking forward to the 200 later and more hoping they step up!!! Being very underwhelming so far IMO in the 2. Womens 4 I think Jodie can run low 50.x and make it through in 2nd (fingers crossed)
Jodie had a belief and it was great to see.

              • Up and down day. Obviously sad to see KJT pull up just as she appeared to be on for a really fast 200 ... But I guess this was always a big risk given het build up . Well done her for giving it everything and putting herself in a good position before the injury - which thankfully isn't an achilles ! I'll say it now : three years time she will win in Paris.

Bird a NR - can't ask more. Jodie into the final and a great PB : anything more now is a bonus. Miller a very creditable sixth. And Muir safely into her final.

So actually a rather good day ...

Decathlon interesting. Warner out in front but Moloney doing a great job in second ...Aussies having a good athletics games if not yet hitting the medals : might be one in this ?

De Grasse got an excellent gold ... delighted for him. The Yanks were thereabouts but not the result they were expecting.

Nearly forgot Pozzi getting into the final too - was too swept up in excitement over that wonderful 400h final.

All in all a very enjoyable day . More please ...
