Garry Cook was a 1:44.5 800m man and an Olympic Silver Medallist in the 4x400m but that was an awful long time ago

Quirot is certainly one of the more recent examples if you are looking for someone regularly competing at both distances at a world-class level. Of course, there are examples of athletes who have moved up from 400 to 800 plus 800 runners who have a decent 400 PB but rarely run it other than domestically or run in their nation's 4x400 team.

He noticeably twitched on the blocks but didn't actually jump. I was surprised it was revoked. Not particularly upset as I don't like to see athletes kicked. More a comment on the officating than anything else. As ever they seem to be very strict on some things and very much not on others.

Gabby is tweeting the stat error now…bit unfortunate to give the error legs beyond her slip up in the studio! No doubt someone else said it in her ear at the time, but she is the face of it

Emmanuel Korir was entered for both in Tokyo, before happening to get DQ’d in the 4 to concentrate on the 8…

Ana Quirot (CUB) was very successful at the 4/8 double at Pan-American Games, World Cups, Universiades & Area Championships but never attempted it at the Worlds or Olympics, always opting for the 800 there.

Thank you both. The closest I could get was Marilyn okoro 😂

Jearl Miles-Clark was fairly successful, but you don’t see many moving from 4 to 8, let alone attempt to do them at the same championships.

Trying to think, who’s the last world class 4/8 doubler we had?

In a post-race interview with Jon Gault from letsrun, Mu said she is considering doing the 4/800 double in Paris 2024.

Ah right. I got my data from the world athletics site so looks like I had the same filtering issue as the Beeb. Still fantastic though!

According to Tilastopaja's All-Time List Keely Hodgkinson is 26th and Mu is 11th.
She'll get there, but not until the BBC have proclaimed the feat as if she had dozens of times.

Quite a few (relative, not viral or anything!) on social media need to remember a year is a long time in athletics. Super pleased for her to take her moment, but not sure all the chatter about today’s race vindicating Alex Bell and showing she should have gone to Berlin in 2018! She’s a completely different class to back then.

I do feel for her, though - the good news story is Keely, the emotional 4th place is Jemma…Alex coming 7th is likely to be quickly forgotten, when most people making an OG final can milk it heavily!
