You have to feel for Gemili. Whether you thought he was in medal contention or not, doing your hammy in warm up has to be gutting.
Decent from Sawyers. That must be one of her top 3 or 4 legal performances.
Impressed by Jodie. Definitely looks like she has more in the tank.
Underwhelming women’s spear qualification. Just 2 Qs. Only Andrejczyk looked like she’d set her alarm early enough.

Agree with all that. Sawyers last jump might have got her a medal had she not overstepped...reckon she tried her heart out and did very well. Lord knows who will win women's jav after that limp qual.
Jodie : how far can she go ?
-
My heart said Sawyers would make top 6, my head Ugen, in the end neither helped in my quest to avoid the wooden spoon in the prediction contest... However, 'Memo to all team GB athletes ' if you are not making the absolute most of your physical abilities, as Jazmin Sawyers does, then I suggest you revisit your motivations... additional 'memo to performance director', the Jazmin Sawyers test is to be applied prior to all funding decisions...

Athletics medal chances - men's hammer, men 800m men 4 x 100 ..... women's 800, women's 1500m, women's hept, women 4 x 100 women's 4 x 400 women PV 9 chances expect 50% ,.... maybe 2 relays, both 800, 1500w hept so good chance of 5 hopefuls of 7 dream time 9 Have I missed any or been too optimistic?

I think predictions of 0 medals are overly pessimistic, but anything more than 4 is pie in the sky
-
Men's 4x100 is gone without Adam and NMB clearly not 100%, I think W4x100 is only a possibility now given Dina not fully fit, and heptathlon dicey. I think hammer will be a stretch too far. Men's 800 there's no one in so we won't get a medal in that. I think Laura will miss out sadly.
I think zero is a possibility. Women's 4x4 and Women's PV are probably the best chances. Beyond that 4x100 w is a possibility, then the mid distances...
I'd say 0-3 most likely.

Women’s relays will be tight, but I think Asha-Imani-Dina-Daryll can get the 4x1 done against at least one of the US and Swiss (order TBC) for a bronze. 4x4 - Swiety obviously saving herself for the relay, but a mid-50 split in the mx4x4 not great. Depends on the lead off we choose, as the back 3 legs will be quite even and I’d back Jodie to win a tight battle for bronze, if close. I’m not sure the 4x1 men will medal without Adam, but maybe a bronze if their handovers are amazing and the real Reece shows up.
I’d be disappointed not to see (at least) one medal from the W800m, as well as Laura and Holly. I’m not expecting anything from the 1500m boys, Kat or Jodie, but there’s usually one surprise, so between them, Nick and Eilish making up for the 5k, who knows!

A race like Monaco would suit both Jemma and Keely. You have to think Mu takes gold, but she’s got a lot of expectation on her shoulders!
-
I keep saying this time and time again, about using cycling-style tactics in these middle distance races to at least get a medal. Women's 800 could be a perfect opportunity, one of the three, Bell the most likely candidate, acts as a super domestique, ensuring the race is run to the best advantage for the other two, but forget going all out for gold and ensure best placed for poduim, with one of the other two taking an 'awkward blocking' position around the final bend into thefinal straight. easier said than done, I know
-
I have been wondering CH about the possibility of a team run. We've seen other nations do it (albeit normally for longer distances)
-
-
Is Dina still planning to run the relay ? I haven't seen any definite information ... If she is OK , jolly good even if she's not at 100%.
Wouldn't write off men's relay. CJ , Hughes , Kilty , Prescod ? Would be a chance I think. Prescod might feel he "owes" one...

I have been avidly watching BBC1 since about 6.30 am - sans flicking and occasional call of nature - and not once, not once, have I heard the performance of Britsh athlete's qualifying (or not) from the 'night shift' mentioned, indeed the M400h is the only reference to any athletics.... Yes, yes, I know its very busy morning,,,, but you might think it acceptable, I think it poor ... if i had not read about it on this forum, i would have very little information, thanks forum, without resorting to other sources. As Martin Fry sang, 'excuses have their uses' but what's wrong with having a running update at the bottom of the screen like news channels have?

I think 4 medals is v optimistic, but hopefully we'll beat Montreal.....
72.....70 athletes - 4 medals (1G, 1S, 2B). Athletes per medal - 17
76.....52 - 1 (1B). APM - 52!
80.....61 - 10 (4G, 2S, 4B). APM - 6
84.....85 - 16 (3G, 7S, 6B). APM - 5
(obviously 80 and 84 were boycott games)
88.....102 - 8 (6S, 2B). APM - 12
92.....91 - 6 (2G, 4B). APM - 15
96.....77 - 6 (4S, 2B). APM - 12
00.....72 - 6 (2G, 2S, 2B). APM - 12
04.....54 - 4 (3G, 1B). APM - 13
08.....58 - 8 (1G, 2S, 5B) APM - 7
12....69 - 6 (4G, 1S, 1B) APM - 11
16.....80 - 7 (2G, 1S, 4B) APM - 11
20.....77 - ??
With some obvious outliers, post boycott games we've averaged around a medal for every 12 athletes we've sent, so by the law of averages a team of 77 should return 6 - 7 medals.

great stat, up there with the 'mysterybrick metric' ... let's call it the 'Ursus Correlation' ...
-
Well that won't be occurring. There is the argument that ROW is getting better - I'm sure the US comparative stats won't look too clever, and that our two main individual medal hopes were hit by injury but it's still depressing
-

The problem is two-fold: other nations have stepped up, but also we’re seeing a lot of people competing for other nations to eg avoid the US Trials eg JCQ, or to take the $$ from competing for places like Bahrain. It opens the door for more of the athletes who would have been out because of the max 3 per country. Similarly with the Soviet Union now split up, we’re seeing huge amounts of what would have been Soviet athletes, because each country now has 3 and they are spending money on central facilities or sending athletes off to the US college system but who still compete for them. We’ve even got athletes that could be going for GBR going for other countries here.
No disrespect to previous competitors, who beat the people in front of them on the day - but we just can’t compare to historic totals when there are so many different variables now, IMO - just on an athlete/champs by champs basis, against expectations for each.

I think one way to look at this is this. British athletes in teams at major champs might perhaps be broken down into 5 categories:
Great athletes - e.g. Coe, Thompson, Farah
Very Good athletes e.g. Akabusi, Elliott, K Cook
Good athletes - loads of these - athletes for whom a top 8 place is a realistic target and might just get a medal but not with any degree of regularity
Decent athletes - loads of these - athletes who are of a decent international class and are not hopelessly outclassed but are only outside shots of ever making a final
Mediocre athletes - always some of these - athletes who, with all due respect, are a little out of their depth at this level. Perhaps those who were a little bit fortunate to get the qualifying or are making up the numbers in a relay squad.
Some athletes do move between categories at different stages of their careers.
I think at the moment on the male side we have quite a few good athletes (e.g. Hughes, Ujah, Giles, Wightman, Pozzi, Miller, Bosworth) but no very good athletes. On the women's side, DAS and KJT are certainly very good when fit, while Muir is very, very close to it. On the men's side at the moment our best chance of a medal should be the 4x100 as anyone individually will need to be at the top of their game and perhaps needing a little luck. The men's 4x400 squad will struggle as it is full of athletes who are probably either just about decent or mediocre.
The toughest athletes to categorise are the erratic ones like MHS and Prescod.Last edited by trickstat; 03-08-21, 12:26.

trickstat ... may I suggest one further category, athletes who never achieved their potential... (should have been very good but rarely rose above decent) I say this because elsewhere on the forum someone listed a few, currently, and they didnt mention the prime example... MHS.Last edited by carterhatch; 03-08-21, 12:35.

All true, but we also can’t overlook that we’re simply not as good at some events as we used to be e.g. look at the longevity of the men’s track NRs - barring Mo (and even his 5& & 10K records are now a decade old) the last one was set in 1993.

When we screw up
we Brits do it properly.
Possibly a medal in the womens 800m Maybe.
I see 1 medal at best, sadly. No longer too much self belief around in GB camp.
I must admit that G
B PBs may be at very low numbers.

He's run 9.94 and has one of the best back ends in global sprinting when fit. You have to admit that is talent.
-
He has a good second half of his race. He has a lot to work o, obviously, but there is potential there (also at 200 if he gives it a proper go, which he has talked about). There does come a point at which potential has to be classed at wasted, but I don't think we have quite reached that point with Prescod. Getting a bit touch and go though.

Great run from Grant Holloway. Shame Prescod didn't have the discipline to stay with his group/dad
Elsewhere....good that Pozzi scraped through although in a soft heat with Beolcian out you'd have expected better.
Wonder what's gone on with Shubenkov.Last edited by SprintRelayFan; 03-08-21, 11:45.

What does the yellow card mean here? Do they carry them from round to round?

1500 heats: Josh Kerr was very lucky to get a FL spot. This is why they used to call it a Lucky Loser place. Jake Wightman ran a much better race, and Jake Heyward was super (admittedly helped by the pacemaker, I mean fellow competitor McSweyn, but he absolutely ran a great race.
TJ: no surprise Ben Williams is out, that 2019 season looks like a clear outlier for him.
400 heats: super run by Jodie taking the scalp of the US champion. I think she has a good shot at the final, although SMU, McPherson and the very impressive youngster Paulino probably have the medals sewn up, with veteran Felix and McLeod the only possible spoilers. Very good time for Pipi, glad she got a FL spot. Disappointing to see Yeargin DQ.
LJ: A very high quality competition. Absolutely no disgrace for Jaz to finish 8th in that company, and 6.80 is a great jump. She had a couple of very long fouls too. Great competitive performance by Mihambo to take the victory.
200: poor Adam, so lovely and so plagued by injury. NMB just not good enough atm. We now will have no men in any flat final 800 or below - possibly our worst performance ever.
400h final: OMG. What more can you say? That was amazing.
