The chances of Great Britain not medalling at ALL in track and field continues to increase. Sure we have 3 women in the 800 m final, but there's no guarantees that they will make it on the podium in such a tough event. Add to that McColgan's heat elimination, the Dina Asher-Smith situation, the failure of capable men's 800 m runners to make the final, nobody getting into the 100 m hurdles final after running times quick enough to make the final earlier in the season.... Plus KJT being almost certainly undercooked, no real chance of a medal in the men's or women's 200 m.
Who are then looking at... Jodie Williams in the 400? LOLno. Nick Miller in the hammer? He's not been seen anywhere for almost 2 months and wasn't in the UK Trials, so no idea what his fitness or form is. Taylor Campbell has improved, but he's not gonna challenge Fadjek and Nowicki, or Kokhan.
Coppell isn't medaling in the pole vault.
Is it going to be down to Holly Bradshaw to try and vie for a medal, even a gold? Yikes.
Muir is probably the most likely that you've missed. Both 4x100m in theory but obviously relays gonna relay. Maybe women's 4x400. Maybe one of the 1500m men, but you wouldn't bank on it.
Can't see Sawyers/Irozuru medalling unless they throw something crazy out there that we've not really seen from them.
With Hassan, or Kipyegon in the line up? Muir is in terrific form... 3:55 form... and yet she was over 2 seconds behind both of them in that recent Diamond League meeting in Florence when Hassan ran 3:53!
Since that race of course, Muir lowered her 800 m PB into the 1:56 range and is showing her pace.... Will that translate into being actually competitive in the 1500? I hope so. But forgive me for not feeling very hopeful with how the athletics program has been generally going for GB so far
Kinda feels like our sprinters don't believe that they have the out and out speed to challenge so are hoping they time the start to get a jump on the field. Which seems a genuinely terrible tactic.
Well, extremely disappointed by Hughes there. Was a real enjoyable 15 odd minutes though watching the buzz of the Italians. Well done.
In terms of our 100m, as disappointed as I am by the two DQs, if you'd asked me before the start what is the best I'd expect, semis for CJ and Prescod, final for Hughes would have been about right. Although expected to see Prescod go close to 10 flat in the semis.
Real shame for Hughes. Run a PB and get an Olympic medal.
Hughes could have done what any other athlete would have done in that situation.... stick his hand up for the starter to get the others to stand up. He'd have likely got a yellow card, but at least he could get a chance to re-set.
Sounded to me like he was obviously disappointed, but making a rather lame excuse nonetheless.
