  • That was an outstanding win by Barega . thought for a second or two as they came into the straight that the Ugandans might get him...but he was strong to the line. Ethiopia one up on their African rivals from day one...

It seems to me the 'rights' have nothing to do with the choice of what the BBC have chosen to show in the last hour ... while I had to read this forum to know what was happening in the w5000m - BBC were showing women's football (GBR vs Aus) and a mix of rugby/judo/golf ... they are now showing the M10 000m is that because they have the 'rights' to show this now 'LIVE', or, they choose to show this?

I dont have Eurosport, as I only use Freeview, I have an old laptop that struggles to show any video without buffering, I dont know what a 'VPN' is and I am probably the last person on the planet without a mobile phone, so no 'apps' ... I despair, and its not just athletics, the beeb are not showing the heats of the swimming - in fact haven't done live all week for the most part.

I am forced to pay £13.37 p/m, to support their 'diversity and inclusion' political agenda, but they show nothing but contempt for the 'minority group' I belong to ...

      rant could continue
      I do not buy this stuff that the BBCs reluctance to show live track and field is due only to the rights problem; you posters are well aware how much swimming live has been shown, with ample chat from the awful patronising chat peddled by Foster and Adlington, and the smarmy commentaries which ensued;
I loved to see the heats and finals of the swimming for sure, but for f*ucks sake why so much time on swimming and yet the coverage of live athletics is a shocking disgrace.
The Beeb is not bothered what we think as long as they can peddle their PC views on what live stuff the paying public want.
Have they been carrying out polls about whether we want womens 7s rugby, BMX stuff, and a host of events that we can get during the year. e.g. soccer, tennis, golf.
It makes me weep at the silly woke liberal P.C.stuff behind it all. BBC keep saying we know better what the young want
. Well i've got teenage grandkids, and my friends and neighbours teenies seem uninterested in the OG coverage vastly.. They do not get up and stay up at unearthly hours i assure you.
And to think i have paid for all this as i now pay a licence fee. Thats the arrogance of a taxpayer supported channels.
Track and field has been the very beating heart of the OG since 1896 and when its all over will we give a tuppenny damn about some of the events foisted on us by the IOC, Moneybags Incorporated.

        Dear me

What part do you not get?

The BBC has only got rights to show two streams/channels at once.

They decided that some finals today were more of interest than a first day of athletics with just one final (which they did cover live).

        But keep digging mate.

Philipo - you just don’t get it. First of all the swimming wasn’t always shown live - I watched a lot of it on Eurosport to only watch it again on the BBC later. The bbc didn’t cover many of the heat swims - I like the heats and had to watch on Eurosport. I actually prefer to watch some events on the bbc as the commentary is more insightful. Your teenage grandkids and your neighbours will have to get up early as there is an 8 hour time difference. You are lucky athletics finals haven’t been moved to the mornings like swimming. You also haven’t paid to watch the Olympics with your licence fee. It’s not included. The rights were put out to commercial companies - the bbc can’t outbid a global commercial company. Also you shouldn’t denigrate other sports relevance just because you don’t like it. Put your hand in your pocket as a rich pensioner and buy a Eurosport subscription.

There are editorial decisions at play with only 2 options available. Personally I was keeping an eye on the Athletics but I got quite engrossed in the Rugby and the Football and I can understand why they were prioritised, especially given the GB involvement. The BBC are not going to keep everyone happy. This forum would prefer Athletics to take priority of course but there are plenty of others in the country who would have been quite happily watching the Football

I am sure going forward that a lot more Athletics will be shown. Whilst Eurosport you can see it all live - you do have to put up with the insufferable Martin Gillingham on commentary.

Any race run at such a moderate pace will be won by the Baregas of this world, but i bet he can't run 26.11; doesn't matter though, because Mo Farah showed that with a very fast finish in a slow race you hold the cards.

Swimming getting near its end though so hopefully you will see the athletics move on to centre stage . Might be a blessing for you that the GB women crashed out of the football 😀

The swimming schedule has been largely unimpeded as all the finals have been in the morning session when there was/is less of a logjam with other popular sports. The heats have been on around midday our time, the Beeb have shown much less of them, hence why the heats of certain athletics events have been given second billing

oh what fun. i turn on my computer and at 2.30 p.m.i see some the athletics with the usual talking heads; what a coincidence.!
If the good lord had given me hind sight,i could have known that there would be some track and field in bits at a time that is way past the live stuff. not interested
Ozjohn I will keep belly aching cos it pisses me off at the sheer ignorance of the Olympics coverage. I thought better of the BBC; not anymore
. Looks like i will have to wait till the next WC in Eugene and Budapest to really enjoy live track and field without the comcomitant shit we have to endure that nobody gives a toss about.
I am sure that people in Fiji love their female hulks beating Aussie in Rugby sevens that popular world wide sport! but I dont live there.

what ever is in the morning is down to the TV/ IOC . The dictatorship of the money bags. Here to stay , sadly.

Try going back to buying a newspaper - you’ll get all the results in one place, a day later. Much easier and more cost effective. 😉

Basically because of the time zones and American TV networks like NBC twisting the IOC's arm to get the timetable altered so that the prime-time viewing of big swimming and athletics finals will be favourable for North American audiences. That's why they have morning finals sessions in Tokyo.

Not strictly accurate, all of the swimming finals have been scheduled for the benefit of the American market, the vast majority of other events have had their finals at a time which is more convenient for the world / European market - even the Biles ones

Only problem is what to watch when several desirable events are on at once . Huge advance on past Olympics. Do you fellows not have anything similar ?
At recent games, BBC have had extra channels/streams which were obviously available for Free. They are now limited to showing events on just 1 of their Channels & 1 extra Red Button Stream.
There are extra Streaming options available but this is from Eurosport/Discovery - people have to pay separately for these which is what's causing some disquiet

Pretty sure the Japanese officials were to blame though. The same thing almost happened in the second heat, but the athletes noticed.

Tbh, whilst that might be the case, the athlete does need to take some responsibility - every other athlete worked it out in both heats!

That we have known about for a long time. Because the USA goes into nationalist hysteria every olympics, and money is the driving force of all this world wide sport and pastimes the nasty taste in my mouth gets more and more pronounced. In a strange way I will be pleased when all this stuff is over. The IOC is one one of the most shit bodies in the world but very smart.
Roll on next year with the WC and CG. Not to mention the DL races after the games are over.

Wtf are you talking. The bbc covered the swimming amazingly. I saw all the heats they showed and the semis.Spent lots of time listening to the chat stuff on bbc.
Some of the early heats maybe not, but all significant stuff I saw. Must have my own private channel 😄

I wasn’t critical Of the coverage - just making the point that there were lots of races and heats not shown by the BBC - I know this because I watched on Eurosport. Also a lot of the swimming races had already happened because I had already seen them on Eurosport. Seems you can enjoy the coverage - don’t look on here and you won’t know what’s happened and you can enjoy believing it’s live. Not a problem.

                • Anybody justifying the bbc s coverage is soft in the head or works for that now well overrated mob.

                    You don't like the USA
                    You don't like the IOC
                    You don't like football
                    You don't like rugby

You don't like our athletes doing well
You don't like other posters talking up our athletes

You don't have to make the same moans time and time again in virtually every thread.

I think the fact that you are wishing the old bbc coverage was back is ironic. Careful what you wish for ….

                • Steeple: Phil Norman dead last in his heat apart from the DNFs. Was it worth showing up? At least Zak Seddon made an effort even if it didn't pay off. The third heat was a really exciting finish with a great run by the Finn, Tom Raitanen.

HJ: Barshim looked really good, I wish I'd picked him in the predictions contest instead of Ivanyuk. Pleased to see Tom Gale making the final. I'd like to see him get a PB there...

Okoye fouled out and Sophie just not good enough on the day. Disappointing.

100 heats: some startling times. Very good PB from Daryll Neita and also great NR from Del Ponte. I'm a bit worried about DAS, who seemed unimpressive, but she seemed happy afterwards, and it was the first heat before half the contenders decided they needed sub-11 in the first round. Sorry to see Ahye back after her ban.

800 heats: all our women through OK, no real surprises. Mu was helped by being on the inside lane I think.

400h: interesting to see Samba beating young dos Santos. Warholm and Benjamin both looked very easy.

5000: Poor Eilish. Hassan had to run fast in that heat, with a lot more races to go. Jess Judd and Amy-Eloise just not quite at that top level. Andrew Cotter still can't pronounce Yasmin Can's name right: it's not like a tin can, it has a squiggly it on the c which means it's pronounced Chan.

Surprisingly we managed to make the mixed relay final, and got a NR, although admittedly it's not been run that often. Good leg from Emily Diamond in particular.

WTF was that blatant illegal pacemaking by Kissa in the 10K final?

Re Sophie McKinna and food, I'm reminded of Usain Bolt in Beijing where he apparently ate little other than chicken nuggets because he didn't like the other food on offer.

The Kissa pacemaking didn't seem to work but it does seem a little blatant that he didn't finish.

A *little*? Watching it I was thinking, does he think he's in a DL and has the pacemaker's job? Then he actually stopped and I realised he did, for the Ugandan team! I'm really surprised there's been no protest or official comeback for that.
