Some big names from Britain's top junior talent will be looking to impress over in Germany over this weekend, and with the temperatures in Mannheim expected to exceed 30 Celcius during the Junior Gala (with it topping out at 38C on Sunday!) and the winds calm, there is a possibility for some very quick times for the sprinters to be gained.
Tobi Ogunkanmi, who only in his 2nd full season as an athlete has made big strides in his development and finished 2nd in the 100m at the U-23/U-20 Championships last weekend, is looking for the qualifying standard of 10.55 that would book his ticket to Boras next month. He set his current PB at 10.56 earlier in June, just 0.01 seconds away from that time, and due to the unhelpfully windy conditions at Bedford couldn't get that standard, will be seeing the weather updates for Mannheim with some hope.
In the 400m Hurdles, Alastair Chalmers will be looking to not only further lower his national junior record over the distance (50.07), but to become the first British teenager to run sub 50 seconds in the event.
But the athlete I'm most interested in seeing will be 17 year old Amy Hunt in the 200m. Last week in Bedford all three of her runs in the 100m were into -3.0 m/s headwinds, curtailing any possibility of fast times. With the hot and mostly calm conditions expected in Mannheim this weekend, it will be a chance to see if she can further lower her already impressive 23.17 personal best set in May, though there will be some good competition going up against her. Rhasidat Adeleke, still just 16 years old, is the reigning European U-18 champion over 200m from Gyor last year, running her personal best 23.52 in the process.... as a 15 year old!
All in all, it's looking like another great couple of days of U-20 age group athletics from Mannheim on the cards and for those who want to the action as it happens, here is the livestreaming link for it https://www.leichtathletik.de/termin...eim-2019-live/ (Link from LuckySpikes' Live Streaming Links topic)
