  • Olympics - 30th July

Some of the w800m heats are completely insane.
Look at this for a first round heat for example!
Find out who took home gold, silver and bronze in 2020. Official results of the athletics Men's 800m event at the Tokyo Summer Olympics.

4 women with PBs under 1:57.5. Nice.

All startlists for Day 1 are up at https://olympics.com/tokyo-2020/olym...2021-07-30.htm or via the Timetable on the World Athletics site.

I see that after Girma's addition to the Men's Steeple, Wale has been added too, lending credence to the idea that Ethiopia are going to being in Gebrhiwet and Edris for the 5000 too. Their teams for the M 10,000 and W 5000 on Day 1 are, however, the expected trios.

Suppose it was going to hit a big name at some point. But the chances of any spread from this in the athletics must have a lot of people very scared right now...

Pretty heavy heats , indeed ! But it is first three and six so a bit of room for manoeuvre ...

An Argentinian vaulter out as well.

A lot of the Aussie teams self isolating as a result of being close contacts of Kendricks, it seems.

          Nervous times.

Does anyone know what channels will be doing dedicated athletics coverage? BBC listings for when the first session for example only mentions Rowing being covered. Eurosport only showing session one from 12.45am - 2.20am.

According to the Radio Times it's mainly BBC1 (BBC 2 at lunchtime - for the 10K final for instance). Some of the heats may be relegated to RB/601.

I was afraid of that. As far as you know you can't record the red button programming?

You can from 601 - I've set both just in case. Might depend on what equipment you have though.

BBC are good at putting it on the iPlayer, but of course that means a delay of anything up to five hours before you can see a session starting at 00;00 & finishing at 04:00

LOL My excitement level is starting to go into thermal runaway already, and there is still 8+ hours to go to the first 100m preliminary!
By this time tomorrow I am going to be exhausted.

Plus, I note that there are already at least two parallel threads on this topic!! That's how exciting it is. 😊

Possibly I am showing terrible ignorance here... but - as @Occasional_Hope said - how come Sam Kendricks pinged Australians and not Americans?

Marschall and Kennedy trained with Kendricks. I assume that they (and coach) then met up with the rest of the Australian team. Kendricks did not meet with the American team. Both the Aussies have been cleared to compete.

Note to all 800 tacticians: making it slow in the first lap is not going to be the way to beat Mu.

Indeed the w800 semis look like they are going to be a lot of fun:

-- Those semis are super strong, but it looks far from impossible for all 3 Brits to make the final. ...They'll have to be close to top form to do it/ though - of course.

Well yes they'll have to be at the top of their game as the semis are going to be fierce...and no room for error with two and two. But certainly not impossible. Hope Reekie makes sure to get first two as the later heats will know what they need for times if it comes to third place qualifications...

You might be right. But I note that in the final The Hodge essentially exactly matched Mu's second lap split!
