(Should clarify that I don't think anyone on here has really overdone the doom and gloom : but some of the comments on BBC HYS have been rather extreme ! )

Peaty did what everyone expected : his comments afterwards indicate that he still feels the pressure despite his dominance in the event . Guess in a a way being such an overwhelming favourite brings its own extra stress. He will feel a lot more relaxed now and can look forward to the medley relay legs...
Scott - and Dean - impressive in the 200 semis. Duncan significantly faster than the field ... real chance for the final. All told a good morning for GB in the pool.

And of course all Australia will be rejoicing after Titmus wins her first duel with the great Ledecky : was a terrific swim to overhaul her and take the Gold. Still got the 200 so on for an excellent Olympics 👍 In fact the Aussie team is doing rather well so far with 2 Gold and a number of minor medals. The Yanks took that men's relay very impressively : but they may be feeling their women aren't doing quite as well as they were expecting to do (I saw a comment by a US swimmer a few weeks back that they fancied themselves to win all the women's golds ! None from four , so far. Hubris , anyone ?)

Even without the crowds , Olympics are good to watch. And nice for the likes of me the time zone is friendly 😄

I wish I f.ound the time zone the same.

    • The big difference for GB is that we had, for the last two games and even in Beijing, nailed on medals in track cyclists and rowers. On the other hand there are more events and opportunities in these games. A long way to the finish line.

The battle in the womens 100m breaststroke and even the backstroke will be absorbing.

That's great persistence and finally rewarded.

          • Philipo, you do yourself a disservice, your obviously a lark. Your early morning posts are far less grouchy. In future would you please only post between the hours of 0300-0500. Many thanks for your anticipated acquiescence.

Agreed! I'm a much bigger fan of early morning Philipo

          • Not to be for Williams, but a silver medal is nothing to be sniffed at.

3 golds and 2 silvers makes this a pretty decent day for GB.

Solid day in the team sports - mens 7s team won both their matches comfortably, as did the two hockey teams.

Tomorrow brings us another 5 or 6 so events with serious GB medal chances - the 200 free, 100back, both our taekwondo fighters, the team dressage and the women's triathlon. There are other chances, of course, but those are probably the best ones.

I can say with confidence you will be hearing from me plenty in the wee small hours before these games are over. I will always be a man of strong opinions.

This doesn't appear to be a golden era for German sport. Outside of Vetter and one or two others I can't see them getting many athletics medals. Maybe they'll have the kind of results that Australia had in 1976 and 1980 that lead them to change things (e.g. The Australian Institute of Sport being formed).

              • I'm starting to think Taekwondo is one of those sports where you are slightly better off being a few points behind going into the last minute of the last round. that's twice in the last two days GB athletes have missed out on the gold having been ahead with 30 seconds to go and not to forget Lutalo Mohammed losing out in the dying seconds in Rio. Two excellent silvers none the less. Walkden goes tomorrow and is a three time world champion so has a great chance.

Titmus was brilliant in the pool this morning, she timed that to perfection. Scott the quickest qualifier in the 200 free, should be a cracking final tomorrow morning

Well observed, Treadwater, on the Taekwondo. It does strike me that Team GB needs to look at those last few seconds of 'game management'. The 'time out' for gamjon clearly allowed the Croatian to get a second breath and compose herself for one 'death or glory' spinning headshot. I hope this is Walkden's time.

The last couple of games have been exceptional for us, but we shouldn’t always expect those medal hauls. Lest we forget where we’ve come from…..

1988 5 golds, none in athletics

1992. 5 golds, two in athletics

1996 1 gold, not in athletics

                • Medals for tomorrow. Haven't heard that the triathlon is to be postponed, but lots of people on the ground say the weather is really bad. It's a big medal hope for GB, possibly more than one. However, plenty of other prospects for medals in swimming, diving, canoe slalom, equestrian & taekwondo.

                  • Thrilled with our guys in the artistic gymnastics A great 4th beating the yanks. Some of our scores on individual peices was outstanding. Joe Fraser is brilliant. Not quite sure which of our guys go in the apparatus finals and the all round. Great to look forward to.

My understanding is it is Fraser in the All Around and Parallel Bars, Whitlock on the Pommel and Hall in the All Around. Fraser and Whitlock will be right up there.

                  • Whose in the hunt for gold, silver and bronze out of all the pundits. Lutalo Muhammad will be hard to beat.

                    • Fantastic recovery from that flat tyre for Georgia Taylor-Brown to get silver in the women's triathlon behind a majestic Flora Duffy of Bermuda.

Grit from Taylor-Brown, and I'm also glad that the margin of Duffy's win means that in all likelihood the flat tyre didn't really change who was going to get Gold.

                    • Can we claim a litle bit of Flora Duffy's triathlon gold?

She was Devon Under 15 Cross Champion (I think it was U/15, may have been U/17) back in the day when studying at Kelly College in Tavistock. (I only remember this as the athlete she beat into second was an athlete I was part of the support team for, and we thought she was nailed on for the title until Duffy appeared from nowhere)
