  • No joy for the horsey team ...third rider Ben Maher withdrawn as they are well out of the medals and he wasn't going to risk his wonder horse Explosion for no point ... Commendable. That horse deserves a lot of apples/sugar lumps/hay and a nice rest.
Equestrian team did rather well for a team of 9 : 2 gold 1 silver and 2 bronze

    • Russia now ahead on the overall medals table after Lasitskene's gold in the HJ.

We have some more cycling tomorrow where we could pick up another gold, but the Russians have the rhythmic gymnastics team event to come.

They appear to have 2 gold shots - rhythmic gymnastics and handball.

We have 3 - Lauren Price, W Omnium and M Keirin.

I'd probably say The Nation Formally Known As Russia are favourites to stay ahead of us, especially with the silver medal advantage.

It's getting close at the top - the US has closed dramatically on China. US probably has better gold chances on the final day.

        • So, our last medals, I think Laura Kenny is a very good shot in the Omnium - as far as I can see all the other athletes are the ones she already beat in the Madison. Jason Kenny & Jack Carlin both have medal chances, probably not gold, in the Keirin. Then finally Laurent Price in the Boxing.

Don't think we will catch the ROC but will definitely finish both top west European and Commonwealth country, which is huge.

Thank you Grassmarket for your daily summary - much appreciated

        • Laura off to a rotten start through no fault of her own... Brought down in a crash which she had no way of avoiding and a DNF - so just 16 points along with nearly half of the field . Leader the USA rider Valente with 40.

Two serious crashes in that . Rather spoiled the race.

Better for her husband ...safely into the semi in the Keirin.

As is Carlin in QF two.

          • But both Kenny's looked great in their last races. Irrespective of what Jasin manages in the final, is he Britain's most unheralded champion?. I know Peaty doesnt get the plaudits he deserves, but Kennt has been there since 2008 , in the slup stream of cycling greats such as Hoy and Wighins, and even to an extent his wife..

If Hoy hadnt been so amazing maybe Kenny could already be on 8 golds with maybe another to come.

            • Jason looked great in that semi. Could he do it again in the final ? Definite chance.

Laura fighting back but that wretched crash has really made her task enormous today. Been a bit of bad luck for GB cyclists here : Katy Marchant bulldozed out of the Keirin , men's pursuit hit from behind ...due a change of fortune ?

              • Laura out disappointingly early in the elimination race - a medal looks like a real lift now

                • Not sure how Laura got caught out in that elimination race. She is normally foolproof in that one. Think that has done for her chances now , barring miracles. USA v Japan at the top...

                  • Superbly ballsy ride from Jason to win the keirin

                    • That was almost unbelievable ! I've never seen anyone do that in an Olympic Keirin final ... brilliant move to completely wrong-foot the others : and a wonderful effort of speed to ride it out for three full laps...

That might just be Jason Kenney's most satisfying gold medal of all .

Just stunning, will hold my hands up and admit I thought he was done at the top level earlier in this competition. He has well and truly made me eat my words.

                        • Seven gold medals now. Up there with Steve Redgrave as greatest British Olympian ever ?

                          • Gold for Valente of USA ... well done her : got the lead after that first race and rode really cleverly thereafter to ensure victory. Locals will be delighted as Kajihara of Japan takes the silver...and Kirsten Wild signs off her Olympic career with a bronze.

Laura really had virtually no chance after that unfortunate multiple crash that marred the scratch race. But she made a bit of a statement , I thought , by emphatically taking the final sprint. Ends up 6th , 12 points off the medals. Take the title back in Paris ?

Yeah elimination race made it a too bigger mountain for even the great Laura to climb, like you say getting involved in the crash also cost her crucial points as well
