  • Nice to see GB record a solid time to show what they are capable of - for what it is worth it was the 5th fastest team time, which is probably where they deserved to be on form. Think, had things gone absolutely perfectly they might have scraped a bronze but even that would have been a tall order.

    Ganna is just a machine.

The improvements in time in the TP are 400m H level crazy though - The 4 minute barrier was only broken in 2000. Then I remember back in 2012 that cycling nuts like me were astounded when GBR beat 3:52. The Aussies beat 3:50 in 2018 but it had taken 18 years to drop 10 seconds from 3:59 to 3:49.

In 3 years since then, they've sliced another 7 seconds off it. I shudder to think what we're going to see in Paris.

    • I still find the skateboarding extremely underwhelming. I thought it would be more like snowboarding with showy tricks, but no, just wheeling back and forth on the set. I mean, I don't actually want to see 13 year olds doing somersaults on concrete, but it's not much of a spectacle.

I agree. I salute their achievements of course. But it's not exciting, and dare I say it non comparable to the effort and expertise athletes expend/achieve in other disciplines. Could I run 100m under 10secs if u gave me a year to train... No. Could I ride a horse to dressage gold or win 3 rounds of a boxing match with a years dedication.. no. Could I qualify to ride a skateboard... hmmm don't see why not lol.

Yes, 4th overall at the moment.

    • Wouldn't count your chickens yet , Sprint RelayFan : Aussies may have nearly run out of water events but they have one good canoe chance tomorrow 😊

Might be an interesting tussle with those two teams and ROC over the last few days...

Australia still has chances in Men's Hockey (in final), Men's Basketball (in Semi final), Women's Beach Volleyball (Semi finals) amongst a few more diminishing chances

only said we're ahead for now! I suspect dodgy russia will overtake us both given the synchro and rythmic

    • Medal chances in the Canoe Kayak 200m - Rio Champion Liam Heath messed up his first race yesterday, but stormed the second. Two outside chances in the cycling, ditto in Diving. Very good chance in one athletics event involving one person, but I'm not going to jinx anyone by mentioning their name, sex or event. Also super-scary relay heats. Chances about 50/50 of successful progress or national sporting humiliation, requiring emergency Gabby blethering. Boxing will be looking to progress to finals, we are not in the only final.

Slate boarding a teenies pastime: nearly as laughable as rock climbing

Russia will come with at least 5 goldies in the next couple of days

Their ball hoop and ribbon gals are incredible
Must start practising just out of the pram
        Not sure it's a sport.

Always thought climbing was at least as legitimate an Olympic sport as throwing things. Definitely more of a faster, higher, stronger sport than many now in the Olympics.

Worth pointing out that no actual rocks are harmed in the climbing.

      • In the "slightly less than brilliant " department for GB : Liam Heath only third in the kayak sprint. He will be disappointed , I think as he apparently had another poor start which cost him the gold. When he nails his start (as in the QF) he's unbeatable ; but he had a couple of bad ones here - including the final. Bronze is better than nothing ...

Like Jason Kenny, the Olympics came one year too late for him.

      • No problems for Lisa Carrington ...amazing Kiwi paddler wins her third gold of this games - and fifth in all. Never in doubt. Won't get massive publicity (except in NZ) but making a case for being one of the top performers of Tokyo 2020

Is that a comment on skateboarding , philipo ? It is a bit out of my demographic too 😊 But I guess the young'uns enjoy it.

            Wait for breakdancing in Paris...

              • Westhuyzen and Green complete a wonderful games on the water for Australia with a thrilling victory in the Kayak double ... Nine gold swimming , two each rowing and sailing , now two in canoes...

Not so good on land : but I think an Aussie is about to win the trick skating gold.

                • The yanks telling themselves they top the medal table Nonsense. The real winners are and have been before New Zealand. A population of 5 million and a small team compared to China and USA, 1400 and 328 million respectively.NZ wth 7 Gs and total 17 medals. Great.

                  • Indeed Australia's Palmer takes gold by a mile in the skateboarding...good few minutes for Australia !

Only trouble is we are likely to be subjected to even more blanket coverage of this sport in the future now 😐

I really don't begrudge those who enthuse about this stuff , honest ! But it is hard enough even now to catch a glimpse of much of the field events etc...

Way to go yet ... GB has quite a few decent chances to go. Will certainly win more overall . Gold will be close. Australia has an extraordinary split of 17 gold to just 4 silver !
