  • Actually just realised those two Japanese girls went before Sky with the 59 and 60 scores so that piled more pressure on before she started.

    • Gold sailing, silver boxing and a bronze boxing

      • Boxing was fun to watch. Clarke battled his heart out : the Uzbek fighter was a hot favourite but Clarke really rattled him and if that wretched cut hadn't opened up he had a punchers chance of knocking him down there ...think he'll be wrapped with his bronze anyway.
Whitaker is a great dancer but just doesn't hit his opponent enough. And with the judges clearly "expecting" the Cuban champion to be on top (how Ben didn't score better in the second round is beyond me) he needed to do a lot more.to catch their eyes. Gave a good fight but not quite enough. Well deserved Silver medal.

If you could combine Ben's footwork with Frazer's punching power you'd have a monster ...

        • Sailing pair were brilliant throughout the competition. Hannah Mills now GB's most decorated Olympic (female) sailor...

Sailing good for the Commonwealth rivals. : GB 3 gold 1 each silver and bronze. Australia 2 gold.

Huh? What could they be possibly protesting about? I watched pretty much the whole race and the British boat did everything within the rules of sailing as far as I could see. They didn't block or obstruct them unduly. No contact was made between the French and British boat either, so I'm not seeing where they could make this challenge succeed.

Protest dismissed. Good . Think it was probably a bit of a hopeful try by the French to try and gain a point or two to get them past the Poles for silver ? But no matter , all done...

          • Not sure what this protest is all about ... but I am nervous because GB isn't having much luck with judges in these games... yesterday the Vikings ran down a GB cyclist from behind and got away with it - now Marchant won her Keirin heat and got relegated for a borderline infringement !

              • I've not seen an official reason but most people are saying that the theory is that French were complaining that the Brits and Poles were working together to allow the Poles to get second overall. Protest has been chucked out though. Gold confirmed.

The Marchant relegation is one of the things that drives me bonkers about cycling officiating - there IS a sensible safety reason for making people stay outside the sprinting line. But it is hard to justify strict interpretation of things like that after yesterday's shenanigans. And how consistently the line rule is applied varies meet to meet. Grrr. Rant over.

                • Just caught up with the race (had dozed off earlier, it's 4am here!).

I suspect the complaint involved the manoeuver GB did at the last mark - they slowed and allowed Poland past them. It's possible that they slowed because they made a mistake. To my inexperienced eye, it looked more like they slowed to avoid making a mistake and potentially taking a penalty. Which is sensible racing when you are that far in front - it's like someone in a heptathlon just marking their opponents in the 800m, rather than going hard for a time. Not GB's fault that France required us to help them keep the place.

That's my take - someone who knows sailing better can tell us if I'm talking rubbish, however!!

                  • They had to slow as the Poles had the inside line and therefore the right of way I thought?

I'm not certain because the camera angles aren't always great. Usually the boat in front has the right of way. There were 3/4 boats close together for sure.

But either way, if you are GB why would you risk it? You know that your only chance of losing Gold is a DQ or penalty dropping you back. Defensive sailing was smart.

                  • Nice bit of trivia, Eilidh McIntyre's father won gold in 88

                    • The sailing gold has moved us up a place in the medal table. Of course psuedo russia will do well in the synchro swimming and rhythmic gym...
                      Still behind Aus
China 7 golds up on the US so I think they'll take them

                      • Australian team pursuit have had a roller coaster ride to a bronze medal : had a crash and restart in the heat. Then were gifted a place in the bronze medal final because of the GB disaster in the 1v4 race yesterday ... and now NZ had a crash and lost their third rider in the race for bronze... Bad luck - good luck...good finish

                        • And Italy take the gold ! What a finish ! Got in front of Denmark literally in the last few metres...brilliant effort .

Must admit I was pulling for them : still a bit annoyed at the Danes for their attitude yesterday.
