I think we can all agree with the observation that we have been very lucky to see so many great champions in track cycling and rowing.

So as we knew, bbc just cant go live for all but the most popular for an olympic games.
The swimming is on bbc at 1.55 pm.
However, the swimming actually starts at 11 a.m. and the morning session is over by 2pm. .

I wouldn't write off the track cyclists just yet. In the past they have often hide their form in non-Olympic years. I'm not saying they'll have the same level of dominence but they still could win a bunch of medals.

That was a great ride by Adam there. With the course and the conditions, and his recent form, I'm not sure there was much more that he could have done. Finishing in that company is nothing to be ashamed of. Stunning riding from Carapaz and WVA though. Wout is just a machine.

I'm expecting swimming to pick up more medals this time.

Just curious where you're getting your programme info, philipo? My TV guide on BT TV mentions Adam Peaty in the 9am - 1.40pm programme on BBC1.

By the way, do you have a VPN? If so, I can suggest some links.

The RT says swimming heats are on the red button from 11.30 onwards, and some are also on BBC 1 but mixed in with other sports. But I think you’ll get just the swimming on the red button. Some gymnastics qualifying might sneak in but all the British men have done their bits I think so it will probably be mainlyswimming.

            What you’re seeing t 1.5 is highlights I think.

Hoy sounded quite positive yesterday in the preview program saying Laura Kenny had a good chance of winning medals in all 3 of her events. Jason Kenny struggled massively between 2013 and 2015 but was back on the top step of the podium come Rio, though it may be hard to repeat this time around at the age of 33

His (and the sprints in general) have showed better form than the Endurance riders have, so I'm quietly confident about them. They are up against a scary Dutch team but I reckon that silver is definitely attainable based on current known form and, if they have peaked right, you never know.

If we do win a hatful of medals, the French will probably complain that our wheels are too round again, or something similar.

Sara Sjoestroem, 2016 Olympic champion and WR holder in the 100 m Butterfly, off only limited pool time, swims 56.16 in heat 4 of the butterfly.... and she looked very surprised at the form she was in coming off a broken elbow suffered earlier in the year.

Live streams of all the sports for those people with a VPN ...

On CBC in Canada via https://gem.cbc.ca/olympics (scroll down below the video window to see the horizontal list of streams)

I've tried it and it works beautifully. Some streams have commentary, some don't. You can also click back through the streams if you missed anything.

Kieran Bird, surprise winner of the 400 m freestyle at the British Olympic trials earlier in the year, had an AWFUL swim in his heat, coming dead last..... ooof.

Apart from the German and the Austrian in the lane beside him in that heat, yeah, almost everyone else struggled, or were off their pre-Games times. Rapsys died a thousand deaths in the 2nd 200 m, Malyutin was terrible... and as you say, in the final heat following Bird's, even Aussies and Americans didn't quite look right, with the two Australian swimmers both looking nonplussed at the end of their swims when they saw the times on the clock.

But Bird was hugely disappointing... Swimming 3:45 in the Olympic Trials.... barely broke 3:49 in his heat. NOT what was expected, and I'm sure he's devastated by the poor swim he put in.

Extremely harsh, that was his 2nd fastest swim EVER, almost 3 seconds faster than his 3rd fastest. His win at trials was a 5s PB in a final, hard to recreate. He was 3.46 at trials, too.

I'm currently watching Bird's swim again on Eurosport @Christy93.... and it was a shocker. No excuses for that performance, at all. "Hard to recreate"? So he was just there for the trip to Tokyo then after a lucky swim in the Trials? So he's the swimming equivalent of Solomon Wariso now? I'm sure Bird himself would tell you he hated that swim and was nowhere near what he wanted to do. He would have been knocked out in the European's, let alone the Olympics.

One of the poorest performances from a GB athlete today. Sorry, that is the facts of the matter.

No, the swimming is live on the Red Button channel now and has been for about half an hour! (It was a bit late because the hockey overran.) Did you not see Occasional Hope's post above?

Aimee Wilmott qualifies 2nd in the women's 400 m IM, beating world record holder and Olympic champion Katinka Hosszu.... Hosszu was only 7th fastest overall

Adam Peaty does the business. Through with an easy looking 57.5 in the final heat of the 100 m Breaststroke. Kamminga of the Netherlands set a new national record with 57.80 in the previous heat, the only other man apart from Peaty to go under 58 seconds in swimming history.

James Wilby also through to the semi-finals.
