Full marks to Max Whitlock : brilliant performance basically blew the rest of them away . He set himself for the one event and must have felt under a lot of pressure (indeed his comments this afternoon before the final indicate he did) but he just did what the true stars do : produced the goods when it counts. Like Peaty , he just doesn't let himself or his team down 👏👏👏

Sailing is a reasonable chance - we're sitting in 2nd on the Mens 49er and 5th in the Womens going into the medal race. Both could still win medals, Men obv more likely.
Very outside shot is Weightlifting Womens 87+kg - Emily Campbell is ranked 6th coming in, I believe, but not far behind silver/bronze in terms of weights lifted in past competitions. Weightlifting often tends to be one of the more predictable events though, so definitely nothing more than a small chance.

The latest prediction of medal numbers from Gracenote -
""Team GB's 32 medals are now eight ahead of the number we forecast at this stage. We have therefore adjusted our projected British medal total upwards to 60, including 16 gold medals as the number of golds is also two ahead of schedule.
"At this stage, it looks like Great Britain could finish fourth on total medals, ahead of hosts Japan. A few more gold medals will be required to finish that high on the gold-ordered table, though. The current Gracenote forecast of 16 for Great Britain would almost certainly mean fifth place on the final medal table."

Gymnastics womens floor is a chance, by no means a great chance but a chance finals tend to be filled with errors. Biles not being there has given all 8 finalists a chance. If the British girl can execute as well as she did @ europeans she will be top 5.. Biles absence could lead some of the favourites to take more risks as the big G is now more of a possibility. I think Biles , even with errors in past champs was almost unbeatable on floor.

What will likely determine where we end up is probably the track cycling - we're pretty clearly not going to sweep the board as we have done in previous years. But I still think we're in for a reasonable chunk of medals from them - the W Team Pursuit was excellent in their qualifying ride, just beaten by an unreal German performance. Still a solid medal chance. The M Team Pursuit was, sadly, roughly where I expected it to be. It just isn't the powerhouse it was in years gone by. I didn't have them medalling in my predictions and nothing in that first ride makes me doubt that.

2nd in qualifying for the women’s team pursuit which is always one of my favourite events.
Germans lead the way with a new WR. We were also under the old WR (ours) but an uneven ride - well up on WR pace but then faded in the last kilo. Katie Archibald is just a machine though.

Well, we beat the Aussies on the Men's side, so somehow, we're still technically in with a shot of Gold. Would have to beat the Danes though, which I just don't think we can do. Getting a bronze would be a success of sorts I think.
The German performance was unreal. Did not expect them to competing for the top step, let alone be almost 2 seconds clear! Thought it would be a shootout between GB and the US for Gold - now that's a race to get into the final!

The women should be there or thereabouts although a little worrying that Archibald had to check back over her shoulder to make sure her team mates were with her (a gap was opening). A more even paced ride and possible changes should see them go quicker.
I didn’t see the men’s, but it does seem to be the trend for the 4th rider to drop off much earlier than before. Even when Denmark set the men’s WR they were down to 3 before 2,375m.

Idea is that one rider leads the team out for a couple of long multi-lap stints, then drops.
-
That’s high risk though as you’re stuffed if one of the chosen 3’s having an off day.
The GB men who set the WR in London were all together until about half a lap from the end, presumably sharing the work more evenly, but the trend seems to have moved from that to burning one rider early.
Personally I’d prefer it if all riders had to finish and the time was taken from the 4th rider, or 3rd if crash / mechanical failure. On the subject of which, did you see the Aussie handlebar failure? Yeouch!
