He shouldn't really be : has had a great games : three medals , including that wonderful relay ; but obviously he wanted that individual gold. Hopefully when the dust has settled he can enjoy what he's done and set his sights on Paris...Comment

That BMX is crazy stuff... couple of nasty accidents. They've been showing a lot of it on Aussie TV so I've seen most of it and frankly I'd have been a bit shocked if Shriever hadn't won : she totally dominated the heats and semis . But of course you are only ever a fall away from disaster. Thankfully no such problem though it was a close run final !
With Whyte getting silver in the men's BMX might become a British favourite sport đComment

yes, I was nervous for that decision with Whittaker, but you just know he is 'box office' with a pro career beckoning. I cant work out exactly the Team GB boxing so far, but 11 started, 3 medals guaranteed so far, I think 3 are eliminated, with 5 more chances (but dont quote me)...Last edited by carterhatch; 30-07-21, 06:29.

The headline is sobering ... 'Great Britain failed to win an Olympic rowing gold for the first Games since 1980 as the men's eight crew took bronze in the final race of the Tokyo 2020 regatta.'
It has clearly been a very disappointing regatta for Team GB. Frankly listening to Katherine Grainger, and others, makes me worry that any deep review will get distracted by highlighting, a plethora of 'plucky 4ths'. What we need is Sir Steve Redgrave returning from running Chinese rowing, and his winning mentality ...Comment

Katherine Grainger is a sporting great, of that there is no doubt, but she is now a 'politician' as Head of UK Sport and that return of medals from public money is poor, and that needs to be said by the one person who is absolutely best placed to say so, on TV, as a pundit, as one of our greatest Olympians in that vey sport under performing, and, now, as the person 'in charge' of sport funding. I am not 'ignoring the good things' but saying the way it is - very poor return at this Olympics, very poor historically, and needs a leader of the calibre of someone who is willing to grasp the tiller, and not enjoying a very well paid job at a quango that has abandoned medals as a priority... so we, marra, will have to agree to disagree, but I hope you are right about Paris, and that I am still here for you to tell me I told you so... -
It seems that most of us suspected the truth - there was a split in the camp between the âall must have prizesâ school & the âdo what it takes to winâ approach.
And I donât expect Kath Grainger to sort it out, at the moment UK Sport seems firmly in the hands of the political Quangocrats rather than the success-oriented sports. -
My guess is that there was some kind of personality clash between this Bugajski guy and Grobler which says at least as much about the former than the latter. While clearly a hard taskmaster, I really don't think that Grobler could truly be as divisive as Bugajski makes out and have such consistent long-lasting success with boats that are crewed by teams of people. While these are likely to generally be focussed, determined individuals there will always be some differences in personality and Grobler would have almost certainly at some times have demonstrated an ability to work with those who were physically talented but weren't necessarily as mentally robust as some of the others.
