On the flipside, the men lost the c2 an event GB was very good at. Would have been great if all the classes could have been retained.
Second pet peeve is the 1 athlete per nation policy. Except in "tv friendly" sports. Then we get 2 or 3. Be consistent IOC. If we can have 3 American 100m sprinters, we can have 3 British track cyclist sprinters. If you don't want nations to dominate sports and want a 1 person limit, apply that across the board.

Re swimming, hopkin will come into the final for Anderson.
In the past Anderson has had a good 100 fly hasn't she? I know she swims 50 fly as well as thre sprint free distances. Just think the fly leg will hamper the ladies in the mixed relay later in the week.

In the AA Jade Carey, who'd been doing well for the US has a shocker on the beam that'll put her outside the medals I think.
Looks like gold will be between Andrade and Suni Lee for the US although Mai Murakami is doing well. Twins were 10th and 18th after the end of R2
Jessica Gadriova well down on her floor score for the team qualifying - Jennifer equalled her's at 13.8, and is so far the highest scorer on that apparatus in the competition - although the top group will finish on floor. If Biles doesn't choose to compete in floor Jennifer is first reserve - but I don't know if reserves are allowed to stay on after their competition finishes - Floor isn't due to be until Monday!Last edited by SprintRelayFan; 29-07-21, 13:20.

Jennifer has said she is staying out there. Gymnastics are very good (as are swimming) about bringing in reserves if others pull out. Athletics should do better in this regard, always frustrates me when you see empty lanes at championships.
Well done to Suni Lee. And thrilled for Andrade after all her injuries, those steps out on floor cost her gold sadly.

Last time I looked our sailors at the half way mark were doing quite well in a couple of sailing classifications.

Heading into the last it's Lee, Urazova and Brandade - however if Andrade nails the floor there's still a chance...
Brits are 17th and 20th, they may improve a little as it's vault last up whereas some of those ahead of them will be on beam
Strong vaults from each! 14.4 and 14.566. Means Jessica currently in third place as their group has got through that rotation a lot quicker than any of the othersLast edited by SprintRelayFan; 29-07-21, 13:43.

In terms of cross-sport talent identification, I have always said that UK Athletics should work with female gymnasts to find a triple jumper. They are accustomed to putting together complex moves, and running up to a vault, to hit a mark, is not dissimilar in discipline to a triple jump run up, with well-honed bounce and balance, qualities common to both, it is a natural match up ... please, please Stew Coach, you know people, who know people, give it a try up at your place...Last edited by carterhatch; 29-07-21, 15:46.

carterhatch I agree. Think we should look to gymnastics for high jumpers, not just pole vaulters.

Andrade can't quite make it, so Suni Lee takes the gold with Melnikova third. Andrade still BRazil's first female medallist. Great achievement.
Jessica and Jennifer 10th and 13th - they both struggled a bit with beam - if Jessica had nailed it she could have been looked at top 6! Amazing at 16. Just think if it had been last year they wouldn't have been there

Having said this, while other teams might change one or two swimmers, whatever you might think of this fashion for 'mixed' events, there is a very good chance of finishing on the top of the podium in this.

Anderson is an odd one. Performs so well in relays, but not quite individually yet.
That being said, I think we sometimes forget how young she is because she's been around for a while - for example in the 100m SFs earlier today, nobody that beat her was less than a year older than her (Oleksiak) and most were at least 5 years older than her.
In the 200m it's a bit different - there were 3 people faster than her who were younger. But she still has time to 'find her way', so to speak.
-
i think the burden of expectation, paradoxically, weighs heavier on her shoulders in individual events, and I understand she is still young, but female swimmers have historically won world titles at very young ages, perhaps she will be a late bloomer... but, I have seen this too often, her demeanour needs to be less, for athletics fans, Morgan Lake and much more Jazmin Sawyers ...

More importantly, Hopkin is currently entered in the 50free. The SF for that is 10 minutes before the mixed medley final. Unless she drops the 50, that seems a risky double in short order.
As for Freya's fly - she's got a solid PB but nothing outstanding. Certainly not quicker than any of the 3 fly swimmers we have out there. I believe she's also had back issues, so I'm not sure how much she does it these days. I think the women's medley - even all at their best and with a good fly leg - only has a very outside chance of a medal. Just too many strong teams in front of them.

What the coaches want and what Anna wants are not necessarily the same thing, especially if it means she has to drop her favoured individual event! Also, there is the complicating factor that Freya is hardly a terrible other option to have, especially after today's split. It's a call a bit like the 4x100 free earlier in the week - you can justify them going either way with it.
I wouldn't be as confident in the Men's medley. Whilst Luke's 200 is going well his 100m earlier this week was less convincing. And the 2019 win had the perfect conditions for Duncan to chase down Adrian.
Don't get me wrong - they can definitely win gold. But if they only got silver it would not be remotely surprising.
-
If by 'perfect conditions to chase down Adrian' do you mean the lane draw, with Scott breathing to look at Adrian in the last 50? Because otherwise, GB will likely be a little bit down again which is exactly the same.
-
Lane draw and the wave that he was riding. I'll qualify this by saying I'm no expert in swimming technique myself but I've read several reports from people who are who said that he was essentially in exact the right conditions to get the best benefit - akin to a cyclist drafting. Still a great leg but not one that is repeatable if he didn't have someone next to him as the US were in that race.

The swimmers have a great team ethos. It's nice to see them deliver at an OG after several disappointing medal hauls in previous games.
Point noted re Anna's 50.

Most will know she is a statuesque young lady (6'3) and has been threatening to be a world-beater from a very young age, but its not quite happening. Personally, I think she always gives herself far too much to do, instread of attacking from the outset, but I'm neither a swimmer nor coach, but, I have seen far too many young, gifted Brits not achieve their potential, and there are some concerning signs.

Agree with Taffy2, no reason it should be either/or anyway. A whitewater facility doesn't come cheap for host cities so they may as well get full value out of it.

Didn't realise that C2 had been withdrawn from the Olympics - given the current zeitgeist perhaps the governing body should have argued for a 'mixed' C2 event and no one could refuse that

and I agree, investing in a dedicated facility for just four events is hardly cost effective, when such a facility is a one-trick pony ...but then the IOC aren't paying for it!
