  • Congrats to San Marino who have just won their first ever medal, a bronze in the shooting. They join Turkmenistan as countries that have broken their duck in Tokyo.

    • Got at least a Bronze in the shooting!

      • Bronze it is. The shooting format is nerve-wracking. It's like watching a very, very long penalty shoot out.

        • And another in the C1 canoe slalom from Mallory Franklin! Could still be better, 2 competitors left to challenge her.

          • Mallory Franklin guaranteed a medal in the canoe slalom now.

Yes! It's the first bit I've actually got to watch and I thought it was great.

              • A Silver for Franklin and half a Gold really, as Jessica Fox's dad - Richard - is a British canoeing legend!

                • That was a terrific event to watch. Don't know how those paddlers can do that - always looks as if they might capsize at any moment : and to produce those brilliant runs under all the pressure of an Olympic final - I salute them all . Franklin put down an excellent time and Fox did an amazing job to run it down : gold for her at last after silver and bronze at London and Rio .

Her dad , Richard , was on comms on Aus TV : managed to keep pretty cool somehow...

                  • Last of the male archers out. That hasn't seemed to go well this time

                    • FOX and Franklin have campaigned for years for parity if events. Great race and well justifying its inclusion.

On the flipside, the men lost the c2 an event GB was very good at. Would have been great if all the classes could have been retained.

Didn't realise that C2 had been withdrawn from the Olympics - given the current zeitgeist perhaps the governing body should have argued for a 'mixed' C2 event and no one could refuse that

                    • Looks like GB's last Badmintoner going out too...

He wasn't even seeded to get to this stage, so he actually outperformed his ranking getting to the last 16. Unfortunately he then met the number 3 seed...

                    • Rebecca Andrade a whopping 15.3 start in the AA on vault and 14.666 on A bars. Could it be Brazil's day?
                      Twins started on a-bars - 13.6 and 12.4

The British team? It was Dawson-Peaty-Guy-Anderson. Pretty much the A squad, except they probably will swap Anderson for Hopkin unless Anna is seriously fatigued (doubtful, but possible - she has the 100m final and will also likely have 50 heats and SF before the mixed final takes place).

Great effort but much tougher in the final I think when the top teams will bring their best. Both australia and the united states will be challenging for medals. Great race in prospect.

Of course the final will be tougher. I think GB have close to as good chance as anyone, with the best Breaststroke leg, Guy being quality and our lead off coming 6th not a million miles of the top 3.

China are the current WR holders, so shouldn't be counted out. That heat swim from GBR would have won the last world championships though. I think it is pretty much certain that the WR will go.

The problem everyone else has is that you almost have to put a man on breaststroke, or Peaty will kill you. There's no one other athlete who is so dominant. Forces other teams to adjust their lineup to counter him, rather than to swim their own race.

I remember reading when the mixed medley was first introduced that the general thinking was that, if in doubt, you should put a man on the breaststroke leg. The reason for this was, if, across all of the strokes, the men are on average x% faster than the women, you need a man on the slowest stroke as the time difference will be greater there.
