  • So I was totting up the medals won at this stage in previous Games and, by my reckoning, we're 3/4 medals ahead of any Games at the comparable point (end of day 4) that I can find the day-by-day info about. Certainly going back into the 80s.

I doubt it'll stay that way, but if it did.....

BTW, I do my own predictions for everything Olympic-y and I have us down for 18G, 19S, 37B. Which would be down on golds but up on total medals compared to London/Rio. Just in case anyone was interested.

Yeah, but I’d realised this does not work. In London triathlon was middle weekend & taekwondo was second week, so we are not comparing like with like.

Sure, and there have been more events here than in London (although mostly in sports we don't do, in fairness). But there have been 4 less swimming events so far this year and one less horse event which balances somewhat the events brought forward.

It's an imperfect measurement, I'm not suggesting otherwise.

Also, if you compare the like for like events from London - we won 3G, 1S, 4B from the events that have happened thus far, in my reckoning. For Rio I believe we're at exactly the same point - 4G, 5S, 4B.

Either way, the general point I was making is that we're medalling pretty darn well, especially in comparison to the predictions that we would drop off substantialy! We may well do so yet, but it's a fine start.

It is indeed the best 4-day medals tally from Great Britain in all modern Olympic Games... the previous best had been from London 2012 and Rio 2016, where GB won 6 medals on each occasion.

A great achievement by the women; hopefully we will have some impact on the in the all around. Cant see the details yet
; i note that our guys really excelled in one or two pieces of equipment. My new fave, Joe Fraser, will i hope get a great score in parallel bars final.
When you think that a few OG in the past we did not even have any presence in the sport, it shows that money, good and tough coaching can do the business. Onwards and upwards for our Gymnastic guys and gals

Not at all aware of this - I haven't followed any of the stories. What are the details/issues?

Google British gymnastics and abuse and you'll get plenty of info (I won't link here as that can cause issues sometimes). Worth noting that head of the Women's programme Amanda Reddin is currently suspended - seems they are better off without her judging by today's performance

I wonder what's gone wrong in China - their gymnasts are usually challenging for the top spot but the were fourth in the team event behind us.

Indeed GB are doing OK. Gracenote the company who do the Olympic medal predictions tweeted -

GB medal tally getting better and better

Prior to the Tokyo Olympics beginning, our Virtual Medal Table
forecast 52 medals for Great Britain including 14 golds.
After four days, the expectation was that Great Britain would have 10 medals - three gold, five silver and two bronze medals.
Team GB actually has 13 medals - four gold, five silver and four bronze medals.
The forecast for Great Britain has therefore improved to 55 medals including 15 golds. This is likely to be enough for fifth place on the medal table on both total medals and gold medals

5th would be good, 4th would be ideal I think - US, China, and Japan ahead...

Just as a little reality check, TKW, Triathlon and dressage were earlier in these games so not quite as exciting...but still the team doing well

Very heartening, but i must ask you to remember that the number of medals in Rowing and especially track cycling, the latter which is yet to come, we were totally dominant and earned lots of medals. I hope that our sailing team keep up our good tradition in the sport.

Number perhaps, but we won't see as many golds, so less good medal table positon I guess

Yes the track cycling usually happens after the road cycling has completed. Sailing takes quite a long time until any medals are won so those would have brought a number of 2nd week medals in the last 2 Games.

if we get the medals now suggested that will be better than i expected and i suspect others here. 5th place overall will be very impressive. great by the GB women gymnasts, bet that was not predicted.

the question you may have the answer to is how many events in total are in these 2021 Games, compared to Rio and London. There are new sports which have their own events.
I understand there are 33 sports in total this year, but i am not aware of the total of all events;"event" meaning all individual events in track and field and all individual swimming events and so on..
Examining Wallechinskys great book, Complete book of the Summer Olympics 2012, the edition covering the 2008 OG,, i count at the front a total of 280 individual events.
How does that compare with these Games in Tokyo Am i right in thinking a host of new sports and their accompanying events means more medals are on offer than in 2004

          • The sports predictions have been wrong for the last two olympics. They are based on out dated stats. They also do not factor in events like taekwondo, where fighters from othercweoght categories fight in another category. The Korean girl today, being a prime example.

As others have pointed out, GB always seem to do better at the olympics than they perform at the previous world champs. They still bring out the equipment that is solely used at the Olympics
this time , however I think other countries have caught up , and preblvious golds might only be silver, bronze or 4th. I predict 8 medals.

Thanks for posting the daily timetable. It has helped me factor in sleep breaks.

there are apparently 339 sets of medals to be won in Tokyo, compared to my above year of 2008 in which there were 280 sets of medals , thus 59 times3 equals 177 more medals to be won by somebody that is a slight favour to us, possibly, That of course will have to be in sports and events where we have a presence in Tokyo. Just a thought. .

I believe there were 302 events in Beijing, not 280.

            • Tomorrow Dujardin can become GB's most decorated female olympic medallist (curently joint after today)
Does anyone know about Laugher's chances of retaining his title with his new partner?

              • the number of events being 339 for Tokyo is not based on my counting, but i googled it and two sites mentioned 339 sets of medals. My last post compared that to a laborious counting of all events for 2008 Games as set out at the front of the book.

              • 2008 to 2021 isnt a totally fair example. In 2008 we were allowed 2 athletes per individual event in track cycling, since 2008 it's been 1. However , the amount of events open to females has increased, and rightly so.

New sports have been added at each subsequent Olympics I'm surprisingly enjoying the skate boarding.

Anyways, whether our predictions are pessimistic, realistic or optimistic, I'm sure we all wish GB as much success as possible.

Loving some of the international head to heads, especially Titmus, Ledecky.

I think Abbey Wood will deliver.

                • Laughter and partner are in with a good chance, but one of their dives has been very problematic at all of the world cups and the Euros. Same story in his individual event. Just hoping the Tom and Matty, miss touch will rub off.
