    • Walkenden into the semis but Osaka being out will be a blow for the Japanese - still they’re having a good games so far

Some informed source said that in athletics in global's, 80 percent of the medals go to those in the top 5 ranked in the seasons top lists and I expect that will be the case this year.

That sounds about right to me. Of course, you can turn it round and say that 1 in 5 medallists are ranked outside the top 5. Not all rankings are the same as sometimes the top few are a long way ahead of the mass of the field and sometimes not. It would be a surprise for someone outside the top 5 to get a medal in either 400H for example.

      • Certainly, if Abbie believes in herself. The level of performances are slower than Rio and I think that the mornings generally are responsible. Great competitions though.

        • I'm giving up on Taekwondo ! Walkden beaten by a head kick literally in the last second of her semi. ☹ That's three in a row like that ! Was a close fight : but she did seem to get the rough end of the refereeing - though I suppose that is my biased eyes...

          • It does show you the fine margins, especially in some sports - we're going to be coming away with 2 silver and maybe a bronze; instead, we could have come away with 2 gold and a gold/silver with literally one kick or punch different.

            • I forgot a well deserved clap to Taylor Brown. What guts to get a flat tyre at a crucial stage, lose about 20 seconds and overtake Zaferes.for the silver in the Triathlon.

I seem to remember someone the other day saying that rankings don't always mean much though...

Rankings mean a lot when they go with what Philipo thinks, and mean that good but low-ranked GB athletes come out badly, and don't mean a lot when Philipo disagrees with them or they would suggest GB athletes will do well. It's a fairly simple system to understand.

              • Tearing myself away from Eurosport, I decided to see what the BBC Olympics coverage furore was all about. After an hour of the chat show, I was "treated" to the tie breaker of the Murray/Salisbury match which I'd watched live on Eurosport a good hour or so before.

                The irony!

Just at that moment I received an alert updating the Liam Broady match. Broady had unexpectedly won the first set against Hurkacz. I'm rushing back to Eurosport as Bianca Walkden is being recycled, this time with Hazel Irvine.

Eurosport live sport. BBC talk and sport off tape. BBC clueless.

The BBC are somewhat hampered this time around by the coverage deal given to them by Discovery after the IOC decided to give them the rights

I’m not a big martial arts fan, but the taekwondo has been undeniably dramatic.

I enjoy my martial arts - studied various in my time - but Taekwondo has served up a real treat. Mentioned earlier that 'game managment' needs to be looked at closely as it could have been two/three golds but for the marginal moments in the last seconds. I am really looking forward to watching the kata in the Karate, but it is very acquired veiwing, and I wont be urging my fellow forum users to stay up late for the Beebs non-coverage

It does seem to me, that, in taekwondo, it is common for scoring to alternate between each opponent with occasionally one getting 2 scores in close succession. It almost seems as though you don't want to be the one scoring about 30 seconds from the end.

              • Serious turnaround for the GB Rugby Sevens team! 21-0 down in the first half to a 26-21 win - some cojones there to come back!

                • Great comeback victory by the GB rugby 7's team, down 21-7 to USA in the first half, they went on to score 19 unanswered points to win a tense quarter final match and head to a semi-final showdown with New Zealand.

I'd say that Team GB can count themselves lucky, the game turned on USA going down to six players at just the right time.... Team GB were thrashed by Fiji, earlier this (our) morning ...

No luck about that decision, in fairness, it was a deliberate knock on and was always going to result in a yellow in 7s.

I don't dispute the yellow card, just remarking that up to that point USA were worth their lead, and this was the turning point of the match.

                • Excellent win for Liam Broady over Wimbledon semi finalist Hubert Hurcasz. And I saw it live!

                • Great win for Broady. Taking his chance after his late call up very well. He's got Jeremy Chardy next, who is the classic French player - unbeatable one day, unwatchable the next. Definitely winnable.

Have to be honest, did NOT expect GB to win that 7s match, especially after how the first half went. Our 7s has gone backwards since Rio, they certainly weren't favoured to do much here. In a medal match though now, no matter what happens in the SF.

                  • In the pool we are just up on medals at the same time as Rio. After day 3 we had 2 and now we have 3 medals but two are gold this time round. We are currently in 3rd place behind USA and Australia. This comes from a site monitoring the daily pool medals .
