I thought it worthwhile setting up a thread for all the other sports at Tokyo 2020. Opening ceremony coverage starts tomorrow at 11.20 on BBC1. Lots to look forward too, our chances in the pool are looking very good

Bless you, Treadwater1, this is a great idea. For fellow forum users interested in the swimming may I recommend you follow 'Pullbuoy'. The link details when Team GB are scheduled to swim, and other stuff on the site includes views on the 'relays', which promise to involve some good opportunities for medals.
We’ve run down the best GB chances in the pool, across the men’s and women’s individual events, the men’s relays and the women’s and mixed relays, but now time to turn attention to when you can see them in action in Tokyo. Here's a full GB schedule and day by day run down.

Would love to see Duncan Scott do something big.

Wonder if the host countries swimmers will suffer from the empty arena. I look to the Japanese swimmers to medal second or third. So usa top, japanese second, aussies third, gb , Russia and china next.
I am not including diving, open water swimming. Just the pool
Best of all ,can we repeat our 2019 gold in the mens 4x100 male medley?
How many world records??
Could be 5??

I'm quite excited to see our mens 4x100 free. We have an extremely young team in an event where athletes typically peak in their mid 20s. Jacob Whittle (16) and Matt Richards (18) are swimming the individual, Tom Dean (21) only started swimming 100 freestyles last year and Duncan Scott is Duncan Scott. We had another 18yo junior, Ed Mildred, swim 48s a few weeks ago - But he won't be in Tokyo. They could genuinely be gold medal contenders in Paris.Comment

The time difference isn't going to make for easy viewing if, like me, you enjoy following a range of sports, and can readily fall asleep on the sofa.
Alors, I have lurked on the following 'discussion board' for many years, as it is well structured, GB-centric, and quality of posting very informative. Ironically though I think tennis is one of those sports that doesn't need to be part of the Olympics but took this as an opportunity to spread the word.

I used to follow an equally informative rowing discussion board, pre London 2012, but that's lost in the midst of time now, If anyone knows of something, kindly share, and though I am a keen cycling fan, I have never found a satisfactory equivalent to our site...

Thanks Phillipo. The swimming heats start at 11am I see, and Adam Peaty is the 5th event. Also I logged into Eurosport for the first time in a while and was amazed at their coverage. Their tv schedule is quite overwhelming :-) That yearly subscription was well worth it!Comment

Murray & Salisbury knock out the 2nd seeds Mahut/Herber in straight sets comfortably. They have a real shot of a medal. Salisbury is on fire these last couple of years and Murray's game has always worked well in doubles.👍 1Comment

Sam freedman is doing good summary threads on Twitter. It feels like this games is more a return to reality for gb - the insane rowing and cycling dominance goneComment

Yes I can see us returning to a level where we get about 10 golds and about 35 medals in total which is still pretty darned good for a country of our size. I think both of those sports had something of a golden generation that is now gone or waning. I know when lottery funding started that track cycling was an area where it was felt that we could do very well with heavy focus and investment. Now, other countries seem to have caught up while there seems to be more outstanding young talent in non-velodrome areas of the sport.👍 1Comment

What happened is that we proved that riders could go from being Olympic track riders to great road riders, which hadn’t really happened before. So lots of nations invested in modern tracks, training squads etc & caught us up.
Also, I do think some sports have lost focus. Athlete welfare is necessary, but it cannot be a PRIORITY - only winning medals can be a priority.
