Toby Makoyawo hasn't run since early April and a couple of social media posts has suggested injury but back running more recently. He is encouragingly entered into the NCAA preliminaries later this week. He may need to run close to his best or even a new PB to advance to the National Champs in Eugene so won't be easy.

What has happened with CJ Ujah? Isn't it unusual that he hasn't received a ban that we know about, or have I missed something? Why is any decision taking so long? Please update if you know.

The case is still with the Athletics Integrity Unit.

I find a lot of these anti doping cases drag on I'm afraid.

          Interesting Grauniad article on Prescod.

Definitely on the right track again.

The PB of 10.90 by Daryll Neita in the semi final was the most fluent piece of British female 100m sprinting I have seen in a very, very long time. Yes Dasher has gone faster, but what I liked about this run was she didn't slow down, like so many in a qualifier would have, and then her chance for a big PB would have been lost.

10.90, folks, - how many years did we wish for a sub-11 runner, too many!

The bronze medal [CG 2022] may not be the colour she really wanted, but Daryll will learn from this pressure of expectation, make an improvement on her start and find a way to be just as relaxed as she was in the semi.

The reason why I post on 'state of play' is to make a further couple of observations.

Imani Lansiquot is the 5th fastest Brit of all time, and surely she needs to be running some more 200s, her start also needs work, but her pick up is strong but the tape always comes too soon. She can run a sub 11 ...

And what of the 4th lady on the all time list... Desiree Henry, injuries have really take there toll on her trajectory, has anyone any news as she had been included on the initial CG relay squad if I am not wrong.

I had hoped that one of the young guns might have had a really big breakthrough this season, perhaps to ease into the role that Asha Philip has so admirably made her own for near on a decade. I don't see Kristal Awuah as the answer, though I have been proven wrong before, and at least she is trying some 200s ...

So, two sub-11 ladies running, with a third possible in the wake, it is well worth reminding ourselves, this is a unique period in British women's sprinting.

I was thinking of adding a note for Amy Hunt - currently recoving from injury/surgery? - but decided to focus on 100 performances. I have my fears for Amy Hunt, clearly a gifted sprinter, but just lets hope she makes a full recovery, that her studies [Oxford] go smoothly and then perhaps a return to athletics if she chooses [maybe 400...]

            C'mon you Rams!

There is good depth at U20 level, so someone like Joy or Nia may either be the one, or inspire a rival to be one.

Agree re Imani - she has all the speed, and shows what she could be capable of on her relay legs…just need the start to be there.

If everyone was available right now, I’m not 100% sure what our line up would be, maybe DAS-Hunt-Lansiquot-Neita?

Hunt ran 7.20 for 60m indoors last year. Combine that with her 200m record she might just be a female Charlie Dobson! That'd be exciting!!

I’d like to see her involved in both relays, for sure…she’ll either smash them both, or inspire other ladies to work harder so as not to lose their place to her! You can bet Steiner getting the nod will be inspiration for winter for several US 400m athletes

She absolutely does. 23.30 in Loughborough back in May and we'll be seeing her (and Sophie Walton who also ran a 23.43 PB in that same meeting) today in the heats of the women's 200m in about 2 hours time.

Of all of them out there she feels like the one for me. But she is very young still I guess.

The British women are by far the best we have ever had (if that wasn't obvious...!) and yes, the pipeline with Wedderburn-Goodison, Eze, Eduan and Euro U18 champ Akinbeleje (another John Blackie production) is looking solid as always. I remain convinced Lansiquot has the ability for 10.9 and 22.0 given her incredible top end (just watch the reply of the World 4x100m final, she ran 10.07 on leg 2 to match SAFP's time and was narrowly down on del Ponte) and hopefully she looks to Neita for inspiration as she first broke 11 last year at the same age.

With legs 2-4 sorted, finding someone of similar quality for the first leg is the challenge if GB want to challenge for gold in Paris. I fear though in 2024 Asha Philip will continue to show her ability to do what it takes to qualify for the team, then underperform when she gets there.

I would love to see Dina on leadoff. Imani & Daryll are ideal for the long legs with their top end. So, that leaves L3 as the issue in my scenario. In an ideal world, it's Desiree. Remember her bend when she won world youths? The race was over after 60m. Alas, even at only 26, I fear we don't see her getting back to her best. So, who is the answer? A fit Amy Hunt? Eduan?

This makes a lot of sense to me. I'd forgotten just how young Nia W-G is so perhaps worth a punt as well. I must confess I've never actually seen her run only seen results

I thought it was going to Awuah, given her starts, but as you say it hasn't quite been working out for her.

Agreed Dina on 1 would be the boldest move if the rest of the team is quality, as it would but pressure on everyone else, but for now (when fit) she is too much better on 3 than anyone else for that to work.

There is no way in a trillion years that I'm taking Dina off either 3rd or final leg* (*if Neita is unavailable or off form). If everyone that is available is fit, healthy and on form, then for me it's a quartet of Philip (we could have won gold in the Eugene 4x1 until Dina's injury, and Asha's start in that was as electric as ever), Hunt, DAS and Neita.

What has Hunt done to take the place of Lansiquot. Hype is not a factor in the qualifying criteria, I hope. Please don't mention 22.42, that was eons ago.

Agreed, Lansiquot has leg 2 until someone else runs 11.0x *at minimum*.

            • #27
Hunt did get down to 7.21 before injury. If fully fit, you have to assume if her 60m has gone from 7.34 to 7.21, her 11.31/22.42 (when her starts were a work in progress) would improve - Lansiquot has a PB of 11.15 and you’d have to assume Hunt was on for something similar. Her height doesn’t lend itself to a bend.

I think Lansiquot was working on her bend but she does for sure own the back straight for now.

Asha never lets us down on that lead off, regardless of her open 100m…but she can’t go on forever!

5 years from now, Philp is still donning the GB vest for the 4x100m squad. 😁

Just coming back to this question - I would hazard a guess that all of the stress and issues Gemili has mentioned around press re RR must be taking a toll on DH, too - I wonder if she wants out of the limelight whilst it’s bubbling on, given the effect on others from the press stories. She ran outside of 12 seconds a few weeks ago…probably best to shut things down for the winter

Imani-Lara Lansiquot notes on her twitter 'Ahhhhhh!!! 11.03 & 11.06!! Two PBs in one day after a four year wait...excited for more, back to work.'

I have to say she looked very impressive in both runs and there was not a lot of turnaround time from the one to the next.

As AW notes on their twitter account

A stunning couple of runs from Imani sees her:
                  - Clock two personal bests
                  - World qualifying standard met
-Third on UK all-time list behind Dasher and Daryll Neita

I can't think of any other event where the top three from the UK All time list are currently active ... it does of course lead on to the next question about relays but I'll leave that for other threads ...
