Sulek hurt, Thiam rumoured injured and Vetter MIA and suddenly this dogfight of a heptathlon at Budapest is looking decidedly less interesting.

The sum of KJT’s individual event bests from the season now stands at more than 6700. With a 2:09 800m (eminently doable, she split 52 in a 4x4 in her season opener), that total is close to 6800. I wouldn’t expect her to medal and she’s still coming back, but that’s usually enough to be well in the hunt for a bronze. The long jump getting back to 6.50+ is a huge boost if she can maintain it - I feared that event was never coming back to her. Just don’t foul three times again! She seemed almost surprised by the speed she had on the board in the early rounds today.
KJT is clear favourite for bronze, in my mind, with Vetter and Sulek struggling. Who else would be more likely to finish in third? That's assuming Thiam will be there, and fit. If not, she's favourite for silver.

6800 has always won a medal in WCs, and almost always gold (the last two editions being the only recent exceptions). If Thiam isn't fit, even 6600 (or lower) could medal.

I heard that Jade (very sadly) withdrew from day 2. Anyone have any more info?

With KJT jumping 6.60m and 6.49m today at the London Diamond League long jump, it's looking like the former World champ is getting back into some good form. Sulek's struggles since such a sensational indoor season has been tough to watch. She must have picked up an injury and has been not the same outdoors.

Jade had a very good LJ recently, albeit windy. A 1.86 HJ and 6.60 LJ moves her another step up the ladder. I'd love to see her in Budapest with KJT.

Getting out the heptathlon calculator, she'll need a very good day 2 to make the UK qualifying standard, but it's by no means out of reach because that excellent HJ does go some way to help make up for the points lost in the hurdles. I hope she does it, I like Jade a lot.

And a 24.80 200 keeps Jade in the lead overnight with 3644. I think she'll be pretty pleased.

Sulek clawed back some points to rest third, with Vanessa Grimm in between them.

A decent 13.22 shot. Sulek in the doldrums, with a best of 12.68, well below what she's capable of.

O'Dowda remains in the lead, Sulek dropping to fourth.

And that puts her in the lead, 76 points ahead of Sulek.

Apparently now 1.83 PB for O'Dowda, but all I heard was "Bravo" as there was no video of the jump. Just O'Dowda looking happy. Typical. Well done O'Dowda.
