Jade O'Dowda wins the her 100m hurdles heat in 13.73 down in Bedford, with Niamh Emerson further down the field, probably a little outside 14 seconds.

Got my first look at Chisom Nwafor in the 100m hurdles in the U18 heptathlon contest.... She didn't win her heat and is very *raw* in terms of technique over the hurdles (she messed up her lead up to the opening hurdle and slowed right down as a result), but the way she powered back into contention, in her first ever race over this length of hurdles race (had been only over the 80m hurdles previously) suggests she has a lot of potential there. Not sure of her time, but somewhere in the mid to late 14 seconds.

Occasional Hope If that is the case then that is pretty good going for Nwafor's first ever 100m hurdles race, and with such a basic hurdling technique too. Of course, it would be easier to keep up with results if there was also a results website to follow.

Particularly annoying with the LJ where it's had to compare results visually and they aren't announcing very consistently.

Sam Talbot looks like he's smashed apart his 100m PB in the opening event of the men's decathlon.... 10.73. Taking nearly 3/10ths out of his previous best too!

He did run 10.88 into a headwind earlier this year.

It’s been a long time coming - he just needed to put a few bits together in one race

BTW, I'm not sure Ella Rush turned up today... She was marked down for the U20 contest, but I don't think I saw her in the 100m hurdles.

Murray Fotheringham is a DNS in the men's u20, also disappointing.

10.84 pb for Adam Hoole with Sammy Ball in 2nd.

Sammy Ball has a very strong day 1. More than capable of 7300 pts.

Currently in the senior women's contest in Bedford, Jade O'Dowda is jumping at 1.77m in the high jump, having cleared a season's best of 1.74m.... And she fails all three attempts at 1.77m and bows out of the high jump.

Ok, I was wondering this because at the time I thought something had happened to her, but Niamh Emerson's apparent no-show in the high jump is not because of injury as I had feared. She had deliberately fouled out of the high jump contest to concentrate on other events in the heptathlon program. That's according to the English Athletics Twitter page.

She hasn't competed in any HJ or LJ since 2019, if she has any hopes of doing a championship heptathlon any time soon she needs to finish one.

I hope that she gets a chance to complete a full hep soon. As you say, she's going to have to face the high jump again sooner rather than later. I think there is a bit of trepidation on her part about that event in particular because it was the one where she suffered her first big injury in Gotzis 2019.

          • #26
Well, end of day one in the heptathlon in Gotzis and KJT and Holly Mills are 9th and 10th respectively, 3695 to 3691, both of them trailing over 300 points behind the leader Adrianna Sulek's 3940.

From what I've seen.... KJT is almost there in terms of being back to her full self, like at about 80%, but I'm not sure if she has enough time left in the season to get to 100% before the major championships roll in. However, completing that 200m in full health, after the trauma of what happened in Tokyo last year, would be a big lift for her confidence as she progresses through the year. Depending on how tomorrow goes (and the weather forecast isn't looking that great to be honest - thunderstorms and rain), KJT should at the very least manage to gain the qualifying standard for at least the European Championships (6250 points).

As for Mills, she looks set for an improvement on her 6211 score from Arona last year, though I think she'll be disappointed with her high jump of 1.77m, when she is capable of 1.85m at her best. Definitely on pace to get the Commonwealth standard (5850) and the Euro standard is also in range. Not so sure about the World standard (6450) though, unless Mills has an absolute stormer of a second day.

I believe Mills has said she does not want to do the Worlds and that seems sensible with betterchances elsewhere

I thought we saw something of the real KJT in the 200m. I could see her getting something like 6300-400, so she'll be in the ballpark of the target set by her coach.

OK day for Holly. I was actually quite pleased with her HJ getting a SB as she struggled all year with it so far.

As for Niamh Emerson, I caveated the positive results last week from Loughborough with the fact we would know more when she competed in jumps.

Unlike others I am happy to wait longer for her to do a full Heptathlon if needs be. Given she has not completed a Heptathlon since World Juniors in 2018 and how little she has competed generally in the last 3 years I just want to see her get through a Heptathlon unscathed at some point. I don't want her to rush it and end up with another injury.

That's fair enough, nothing is worth more injury, I'm just wondering what her game plan is. We'll see.

I take it that Emerson won't do the LJ tomorrow. I hope she gets back and realises her potential, but three years since a HJ or LJ leaves me cautious on her heptathlon future.

Ahh, so that's the plan then... First of all, last weekend's appearance at the Loughborough International to try a few of the events, like the 100m hurdles, javelin and shot put, to see how her body holds up after so long out of competition. Then this weekend, more of the same but with a few more events added.
And finally next weekend will be her first full on heptathlon, long jump, high jump included.

Day 2 in the Gotzis heptathlon sees KJT record a decent series in the LJ, with a best of 6.37m (+1.0m/s), a season's best. That moves her up to 7th overall on 4660 points, still over 200 behind leader Sulek. As for Holly Mills, she also managed a season's best jump of 6.25 (+0.7m/s), which eventually she's her move up to 9th place with 4618 points, still well on target for getting both the EC and CWG Q standards.

I hope so, because they're both likely to fall behind in the javelin. Holly has one of the poorest PBs in the competition and Kat is obviously Not At Her Best.
